Introduction

Another day, another selection of wines to tap and enjoy, or otherwise, with KC…followed by the ejection of a bleeding cork (with trepidation) of an old Aussie and a spot of lamb shank stew

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 1998 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

From Coravin. On the nose caramel, leather, coffee, slightly spiritous note, raisins. On the palate contrarily it's a little sharp with nutmeg, caramel, raisins, spice and a little alcohol warmth on the finish. Travels long but a bit meh for me on this tasting.

  • 2004 Thibault Liger-Belair Clos Vougeot Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

From Coravin. Cork taint over red berry, sweet spice and a little meatiness. Sour and unpleasant on the palate. Corked. FLAW

  • 2004 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

From Coravin. Ripe, rich, leather, Silk Road spices, slight earth, blackberry, gamey notes and a little bit of stalks. Those stalks are more evident on the palate, juicy, long, similar flavours to the nose though less gamey. Feels a little younger than it's age...nice

  • 2003 Domaine Arlaud Clos de la Roche

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

From Coravin. Herbaceous, woody, stalky with very polished oak, mushrooms and slightly gamey red berries. On the palate there is slightly stalky ripe red berry fruit, spice, travels long and finishes warm. Yum but a little more time though approachable now.

  • 2003 Domaine Arlaud Clos St. Denis

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

From Coravin. Quite meaty with mushrooms, a little tomato leaf green quality over polished oak, plums and blackberry. Initially a little more sharp in the mouth than the nose, black fruit, long. Yum.

  • 2003 Domaine Arlaud Bonnes Mares

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

From Coravin. Rich, ripe, Indian spice, slight tomato leaf, toast, polished oak, more red berry of me on the nose. And more of the same in the mouth, some tannic grip here that dries the mid palate, again a little warmth on the long finish. Very pleasant but time for me.

  • 2007 Domaine de Montille Corton-Clos du Roi

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

From Coravin. Biscuit, white pepper, red berry, polished creamy oak. Juicy acidity, fresh red berry fruit, spice, integrated tannins. No tertiary for me at the moment. Long, delicious. Drink now if you like 'em primary otherwise come back in 10+ years

  • 1980 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Decanted slowly for about 20 minutes. Baked earth, sweet spices, mint, leather, a touch of oxidation lends an almond note, caramel, oak, old raspberry jam if you can imagine such a thing. Juicy, savoury, fleshy spiced old black fruit, still some gentle burr, almond and chocolate notes, cream, vanilla, travels long. Cork was totally saturated and moist to the touch but this was bloody lovely. Results.

Closing

Fun as always - that Wynns was a welcome surprise, the liger-belair a disappointment. The other Burgundies were, for the most part, extremely enjoyable.
