Introduction

We ended up with seven of us at the Kenwood as a series of issues cost of three at the last minute. But that did not deter and the wines were rather impressive this evening with everything really showing well.

  • 2005 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Jerusalem Hill 91 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Dark red color. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This was bigger and more intense on the palate overall with a more high toned feel the dark fruits. The fruit is gravitating toward a liqueurish character. I think this past peak and has lost some of the brightness I assume this once had. The texture is still good and the tannins are noticeable. I would not hold this myself.

  • 2009 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Medium red plus color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 90 minutes. This has improved significantly since last having this four years ago. I suspect were at peak now with a marked elegance that I often see with Beaux Freres. Not usually one of my favorite Oregon vintages especially for aging, this bottle is just lovely and shows no signs of deteriorating any time soon. The nose is beautiful with a perfume of earth and a touch of funk along with a cornucopia of spices highlighted by a cinnamon note. This reminded me of a Vosne Romanee spice profile. The fruits are largely red berries, blending harmoniously with the spice, earth and floral elements. There's an ideal medium weight here with soft integrating tannins. Very, very good and I wish I had more of these. 93 to 93+pts.

  • 2008 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass plus over 90 minutes. Boy this is awfully good. The texture stands out Then of course there's there's that fruit, dark berries with a freshness and intensity; strawberry, pomegranate, with excellent spicy complexity. The earth is there, but it took a bit to come forth and as it did this gained even more for me. This comes together very well right now and I don't think this nearly at peak. Very long too. 93+(+)pts.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 1997 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. A far cry from what the original scores would suggest for this wine, and another reason to take them with a grain of salt. Pichon almost always delivers and with the requisite age even more so. At just over 20 years now this is a classic mature Bordeaux. The nose offers smoke, cigar, dark fruits, tobacco and char with hints of black olive tapenade. The palate has that scorched earth with ample cigar and pencil on top of the dark fruits. Full bodied with somewhat grainy tannins that are melding in along with the wood. Plenty of life left here. 92 to 92+pts.

  • 2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

In what was the surprise of the night, and most pleasantly so, the '07 Beaucastel truly shined. I've been disappointed many times by how the '07' CdP's have shown, but here's a ray of hope. As galewskj noted, this is still a big wine, but it has come together rather dramatically from my previous experiences and that was despite no air time. This had classic CdP character with dark fruits, spice, garrigue, and floral elements that comes off very well balanced. I really enjoyed this, and I look forward to seeing the Beaucastel evolution as this ages. 93(+)pts.

Flight 6 (2 Notes)

  • 2015 Sineann Pinot Noir Reserve Wy'east

    USA, Oregon/Washington, Columbia Gorge

Bonus 375ml at the end of the night from Jason. Good, sappy borderline syrupy, dark berries, decadent but certainly tasty.

  • 1998 Château Rieussec 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Medium dark gold color. Drank a small glass over 30 minutes. Maybe less complex than some, but still supple while not being overtly rich and unctuous. Really just pretty with an even handedness that I appreciated, nectarine, tangerine, custard.
