Introduction

Tapped the latest batch of new arrivals to make sure all was well with the vinous world. Then cracked a one of them to have with lunch and a ring-in to have with supps…

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1996 Tahbilk Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Nagambie Lakes

From Coravin. Rich ripe black fruit, plenty of caramel and vanilla, slightly oxidised notes, cream, leather. In the mouth it's juicy with ripe black fruit and a slight redcurrant underpin. Vanilla, leather, sweet spice.

  • 1996 Lindeman's Cabernet Sauvignon St. George

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

From Coravin. Biscuit, leather, a little gamey, plentiful sweet spice, slightly dusty cigar box and ripe/stewed black fruit. On the palate it's juicy with Ribena fruit, soft, leathery tannins, a little spice, cedar, long, harmonious…

  • 2001 Château Prieuré-Lichine

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of biscuit, saddle leather, graphite, slight blackcurrant and a little toasted plum backed by cedar and sweet spice. In the mouth it's juicy, fleshy with toasted fruits, slightly cedar, a gamey note, tannins are a little gritty. Pleasant.

  • 2003 Château Prieuré-Lichine

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Savoury, ripe blackcurrant, warm sweet spice, caramel, cedar over sweet black plums and a little cherry. On the palate though it's juicy, the fruit a little sharper than I thought it would be. Tannins are gritty. It's a big disjointed for me.

  • 2014 Montirius Vacqueyras Le Village

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vacqueyras

Jubey red berry; stalks and raspberries, slight herbaceousness and something pointy and spiky, some sweet spice and a little pepper. Similarly jubey on the palate with juicy acidity that grows a little sharp on the finish. Fresh would the polite version. Went well with Charcuterie

  • 2001 Knots Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Capstan

    Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Bendigo

Leather, cream, vanilla, clove, cedar, muted blackcurrant. On the mouth it's juicy, fleshy, fresh with a similar flavour profile to the nose. Tannins are silky. Nice though not as expressive as previous bottles.

Closing

I grabbed the two 1996 Aussie cabs to put in a blind bracket with another Aussie and three Haut Medoc…the Tahbilk was fairly obvious but the St George might get some head scratching going on…
