  • 2005 Chasseur Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Gerry's wine (purchased through Winery Direct). I was eager to taste this heralded producer.( CGTW awarded Chasseur its honor of Winery of the Year.) We were not disappointed. An excellent Pinot, although I slightly preferred the Patz & Hall in this flight. The group was split in this flight which was probably the second best flight.

  • 2005 Patz & Hall Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Craig's wine. The group was split in its preference. I preffered the Patz & Hall to the Chasseur, although both wines were very good, but perhaps a bit young. This to me had all the good characteristics of PN, good bouquet, palate, and finish. Seemed to be more evolved than the Chasseur.

  • 2002 DuMOL Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 89 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

My wine. I double decanted all 4 wines in the am. They all had more bouquet, and flavor in the morning, than they did in the evening. They had just come out of my cave at about 65, and I think the Bakery's temperature left them a bit flabby. We'll have to monitor the temperature, to determine if perhaps we should briefly chill the wines. The RRV was cearly weaker than the Finn, and the Ryan.

  • 2002 DuMOL Pinot Noir Finn 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

My wine. The second wine in the DuMol flight. Clearly superior to the RRV, but lacked the finesse of the Ryan. Again showed better upon decanting in the am.

  • 2002 DuMOL Pinot Noir Ryan 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

My wine. Clearly the best of the DuMol's, but not as memorable as the bottle we had last year. An elegant, complex Pinot that should continue to evlolve. Sadly this was my last bottle, although I have several of the 04's.

  • 2001 Martinelli Pinot Noir Bondi Home Ranch Water Trough Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Green Valley of Russian River Valley

Mike's wine?- (from MY CELLAR!) One of the three stellar wines from the 5th flight. Judy, Ellen, and Mike's WOTN. It as all Martinelli PN's is exceptionjal. Great bouquet, acidity, palate and lingering finish. The rest of the group preferred the older wines in the flight, the 98 Williams-Selywm, and the 95 Martinelli, both of which to my mind showed excellent secondary development.

  • 1995 Martinelli Pinot Noir Reserve Martinelli Vineyard 94 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Elaine & Ed's wine. To my mind the second best in this extraordinary flight. But that is because the older wines reflected the magic potential that is Pinot Noir, i.e. secondary and tertiary development.

  • 1998 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard 95 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Robertya & David's wine. WOTN for 11 of 14 tasters. Show's great development, and a tantalizing gingerbread note. This and the 95 Martinelli both reflect the meris of aged Pinot Noir.

Closing

The key insight from this tasting, was that older wines show much more nuance and development than younger wines. Several of the wines were expected to show more, and we'll have to monitor serving temperatures in the future to assure the wines have an fair opportunity to strut there stuff. Given the supriority of the older wines, our next dinner Thursday, December 20th, will be Napa Cab Sauv c dominant wines from the last CENTURY, i.e. 1999 and older, and followed in January by Italian IGT's from the same period.
