Introduction

12 people got together to taste some 2002 Bourgogne wines from around Bourgogne. We focused on Grand Cru, but also added three Premier Crus to the total line up of 16 bottles. 2002 was chosen due to the harmony and balance often found in the wines of this vintage

Flight 1 - Warm up flight (4 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

Sweet fruits on the nose. Very good balance and length still with sweet tasting fruits A little bit tight to begin with, but a lovely wine and the best in the first flight.

  • 2002 Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Pitures 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    (3/28/2019)

Supposedly the lesser wine paired against three grand crus, but it was only the Clos des Lambrays that exceeded it in quality. A little bit tight, with licorice and darker fruit elements, but good balance. A food wine at this point, but a very good showing indeed.

  • 2002 Nicolas Potel Mazis-Chambertin 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

Many at the table liked this wine better than me, but I could not get past the mushroomy nose and perhaps a little lack of fruit in the mouth. I will admit that it actually had a good tightness and worked well with food, but to me it did not have Grand Cru quality.

  • 2002 Remoissenet Père et Fils Corton-Clos du Roi 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

I am not familiar with the style of this producer, but this particular bottle seemed very old school, but in a good way. A little bit dusty, but with red fruits also, tight but not too much. An enjoyable wine indeed.

Flight 2 - Gevrey-Chambertin flight (4 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    (3/28/2019)

An absolutely amazing nose that seduces you with scents of small red berries, vanilla and cinnamon in a lush expression that makes you wonder if you are about to drink wine or vanilla flavoured creamy red fruit. In the mouth it seems so effortless yet the wine has weight. Incredibly well balanced. The wine feels light, maybe because it is served besides two Chambertins (Rousseau and Damoy), but there is plenty of extract. I don't know if I would be able to pick this wine blind in the future, but I will never forget this expression and if I meet it again I will guess this producer and CSJ. Incredible wine!

  • 2002 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

Served in the same flight as Rousseau CSJ (same vintage). You could easily feel the kinship yet this was more tight and to some extend we were tasting the potential here and it is certainly there! This wine is elegant and stoic yet also with the charm of the CSJ, just not in spades. On this night I must admit, that this wine didn't hit me in the heart like the CSJ did, but even to me there is little doubt that this will be the better wine some years from now.

  • 2002 Pierre Damoy Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

This wine had the elements I associate with Chambertin, whereas the Chambertin and CSJ from Rousseau in the same flight had a more feminine expression. Meat and blood on the nose, massive, but with less elegance than the Rousseaus. An impressive wine that could benefit from further cellaring.

  • 2002 Domaine Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

A potent but not very elegant wine when compared to the Rouuseaus and to some extend the Damoy in the same flight. Nothing out of place, but less of the style of Bourgogne that I prefer. Still a very good wine. It appears to have many years ahead of it.

Flight 3 - Vosne-Romanée flight (4 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine Jean Grivot Richebourg 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

Very big wine and much denser than the DRC and the Leroy in the same flight. When compared to those I maybe wouldn't even have guessed it to come from Vosne-Romanée due to the lack of lush fruit and spice. Not all wines need to have these elements and this is clearly a wine of stuffing and great potential. Not my preferred style, but I acknowledge that years from now this could be a magnificent wine.

  • 2002 Domaine Francois Lamarche La Grande Rue 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Grande Rue Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

Served in the same flight as Grivot Richebourg, DRC Grands-E and Leroy Beaux-Monts in same vintage. This wine seems much out of place and frankly not in the same league. A bit clumsy and with no Vosne elements. An insanely good terroir that produces this in a very good vintage? I score it 91 because I suspect that the competition made it sem less of a wine than it is, maybe a little too generous with the points here...

  • 2002 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 100 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    (3/28/2019)

Wow!! This is amazing. I am not sure my words can do this wine justice. It is cool on the nose with small red berries and a little smoke. So incredibly tasty with just the right amount of extract, stamina and red fruits, but kept in check by precisely the right level of acidity. The mouthfeel is marvelous too. I tend to score wines a bit higher than the average user here, - especially this type of wine. However I am left with nothing I could come up with that could enhance my experience with this wine and I can point to no wine in the world I would rather drink. Therefor I have to give 100 points (a first for me in here).

  • 2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

Incredibly beautiful nose which to me is different to other top Vosne wines like for example Cathiard or Leroy, but I can't put my finger on precisely what it is. Perhaps it is a little darker expression, but stil floral and sweet fruited. This wine was also lovely in the mouth with impeccable balance. Other tasters pointed out that it was somewhat shorter than the other wines in this flight and that was correct. Still it was a magnificent wine, that I in retrospect think should be rated higher, but I did put 95-96 on the paper that night, so I will leave it at 96.

Flight 4 - Bonnes Mares and Clos de la Roche flight (4 Notes)

  • 2002 Henri Boillot Bonnes Mares 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

This wine actually was included in the tasting due to very positive tasting notes here on cellarTracker, - so thank you for that. I am much in accordance with the earlier notes and found this very hedonistic for a Bonnes Mares. Much more ready than the Roumier Bonnes Mares 2002 (95) in the same flight, but years from now they will likely be separated by more than one point. A really good wine that from normal bottling is ready now.

  • 2002 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

Some at the table felt this was slightly faulty due to much acidity. I unfortunately can not say if it is the wines expression or if it was slightly faulty. To me it was tight, but not out of balance. Not a style of wine i like too much or maybe I just didn't taste an up to par bottle.

  • 2002 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche Cuvée Auguste 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

This wine had a lovely nose, where you felt the elements had melted together beautifully and that your tastebuds were about to be caressed with lovely red fruit. The taste was much in that league, but not with the length of some of the other wines. I was impressed with this wine from a producer I have very little experience with, but from now on will keep an eye out for.

  • 2002 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    (3/28/2019)

Fantastic nose. Strong and with great presence in the mouth. It is a bit darker and less feminine than the wines that are closest to my heart, but it is truly great wine, that maybe was unfortunate to be served right after my first 100 pointer (Leroy Beaux-Monts 2002).

Closing

Great wines, food and company and a night I will never forget. There was so much good wine and some of the wines tasted are or will be legendary. A big thank you to the staff at Palægade who always do a great job. Also thanks to the participants. Rarely have I seen people come from very different places and ages to just enjoy a wine experience together and actually to a large extend agree on what was great experiences on the night and what was not so much. Leroy Beaux-Monts was unanimous WOTN and deservedly so.
