Day of the Goat: A Pichon Lalande Fractured Vertical

Introduction

This was a bit of a hybrid concept that was the merger of Leo's idea to do a whole goat for the group and Brad's suggestion we try to do a Bordeaux vertical. Ideas for producer shot around and Pichon Lalande quickly emerged as a good candidate for everyone to participate. We lost two at the last minute, but had a real nice group of eight. It turned out to be a beatiful night - a rarity so far this Spring and we had a nice early on the patio before moving inside to do the main event. The wines were all excellent, and Leo & Cheryl's goat impressed everyone. The Day of the Goat was a rousing success.

  • 1983 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark red color, 1cm tranisitional margin. Great way to start the vertical. This is in the prime drinking window. There's a great nose of earth, funk, leather, graphite, red fruits, cherry, a little herbaceous (in a good way). The palate is medium bodied, refined, dark red cherry, graphite, earth, really soft texture. A little more acid and a touch of dried wood on the finish. This is resolved or nearly so. Fantastic.

  • 1985 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Earthy and more herbal than the '83 and bigger, bold dark fruits, cassis, blackberry. More intense and dense on the palate, black fruit, pencil, earthy, immense minerality, funk, tobacco. This is at least 5 years from peak and it can go another 15 to 20 years. Outstanding.

Flight 5 - Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red color. Splash decanted for 15 minutes. Drank a glass over 2hours plus. Spellbinding and seamless, this is wonderful. Nearly perfectly integrated this has the depth and finesse of a hypothetical blend of the 83 and 85. Silky and caressing on the palate with a glorious perfume of potpourri, cassis, wild raspberry, leather, damp earth, pencil, and fine cigar. This is beatifully balanced and supremely elegant and long. Great fuit, structure and polish. One of my all time favorite Pichons.

  • 1995 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Still a veritable baby, the '95 is a great wine that like many of the 95's is in want of more time. This too has a bigger frame, a more austere, dense dark fruits, more tannins and more intense wood still needing to fully resolve, lots of graphite and there is some floral character lurking in the background. This was a little medicinial at first, but that blew of pretty quickly. I'm a fan of this wine and I have had some bottles that were really great. Still can use some time or give it a a couple hours of air. 92(+)pts.

Flight 6 - Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red/purple. This had been open for about 12 hours of slow O. Drank a glass in a flight with the '04 and '11. Very good, mint and herbal notes on the nose with dark fruit and wood. The palate is full bodied and dense for the vintage, black fruits, dark cherry, plum, earth, pencil, nice texture. Really good.

  • 2004 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red/purple. PNP, Drank a glass in a flight with the '02 and '11. This took 30 miutes to really start to open up, but once it did, it showed well. Floral, a mix of red and black fruits, denser than the '02, more glycerin, full bodied, and continuing to improve through dinner. My favorite of the flight. This is getting back to the open knit wine we saw in its relative youth ten years ago when the nose was stunning. I think this can go longer than windows suggest.

  • 2011 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red/purple. PNP, Drank a glass in a flight with the '02 and '04. Note taking was fading at this point. Herbal, some green notes still, cassis, tobacco, graphite, medium-full to full bodied, youthful with wood and some firmer tannins. I'm not so sure about the drinking window suggested by VFC of 2025 to 2075 though. That might be pushing it a bit. 91(+)
