Frey's Cat Ranch (Somewhere in the Northern Burbs, MN): Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Green apple, hazelnut, tart, almond cream, Meye lemon, chalk, poised. Good to know there's a few of these left. They've drank so well, they keep disappearing.

PnP - A nice Champagne that hits above its weight (price) class. Apple, pear, straw, brioche and sea shell stood out on this Champagne. Nicely effervescent and well balanced with good acidity. A very enjoyable and refreshing Champagne! Solid 92.
3rd bottle from a 6 pack, last consumed one of these 1.5 yrs ago. Delicious this evening, this Champagne helped us ring in the new year. Some bready notes, lemon and apple fruits, alongside the requisite chalk and quinine notes. Bright and full on the longish finish. Lovely. Enjoy through 2028 or so.

Vintage bubbles for Christmas- a really nice wine. Initially it was a tad more acidic than I had expected and citrus was certainly predominant over brioche. However it settled down fairly quickly and there was a nice depth to the wine. VFM? The jury is out.
Epler, toast, sopp og kalk. Noe mager og hul i munn ved første glasset, men vokste med luft til en bredere og mer konsentrert vin. Veldig «pleasant» med god modning - ikke mye å hente på vidre lagring.

Champagne In My Backyard: Served blind. This had an apple flesh core, with some tangy acid. It came off as kinda closed down for me, tight, lacking balance. It loosened up with air, then shows some stone fruit.

Blind: literally talking about Veuve while I was tasting this blind. I think the house gets a bad name in my humble opinion. This was a great setup in a lineup of primarily growers. This showed well as a classic style with a creamy mouth feel an actual buttery note.

Blind Champagne at FMIII's: Tasted blind. A bit lactic/buttermilky on the Nose (of all wines I've had, it was a 1998 La Grande Dame that most showed this characteristic --- interesting to see this might be a house thing). Came across as dry and crisp with high acidity; a touch woodsy; short finish. Did not like it --- the Nose really ruined it for me.

I thought this would be great to stick in a blind lineup that would have lots of geeky growers in it. The yellow label gets knocked and has become a symbol of corporate wine making. I think the wines are better than have been given credit for in the past. Classic nose showing some brioche. Very balanced and clean. Wasn't super expressive when I tried it. It might have needed more air or not.
DG March 2018, this is still steely taut and lemony fresh, but with some roundness starting to develop. Drinking now but will keep 5 years at least on this showing.

the fruit was quite reserved and it tasted surprisingly mature and certainly needs food - on the basis of this bottle I would be inclined to drink this in the short term but it may have been just an odd bottle?

Light youthful straw color. Nose is medium intensity, it has lemon/citrus fruit, touch of green apple, yeast, wet stones/chalk and minerality. Palate is fresh, young, high acid and citrus driven with a clear salty touch. Finishes long with strong lime notes, some toasted nuts and minerals. I think more time will improve this wine, the acidity is high and if it softens a bit, I think the wine will be in better balance. Still very good stuff, just keep a bucket of Tums nearby to cope with the heartburn from the acidity!

An embarrassment of steak riches (Chez G): Generous extra bottle, served blind. Definitely at the Grand Marque end of the spectrum - acidity under control and dosage that feels like it would support some aging. Someone suggested blanc de blanc which I could get but we were told this is a pinot heavy house. Revealed as an 08 veuve - this is a decent drink, would be very welcome at any sort of champagne-requiring event but doesn’t really have the excitement or complexity I’d hope for from a 2008 vintage champagne.

Last bottle was a year ago (daughters bday, 14 this time. I really enjoyed this, drinks very easily, not as complex as I would expect for a vintage and more open than I would expect for 2008. But definitely a crowd pleaser

From mag. Decanting Queen’s note is spot on. Youngish still. Great bottle but not amazing or “vintage-like”. Probably needs time to develop some secondary characteristics and get more interesting.

Roof Top Sherry and More (David's Place, Mpls): Light gold color. Drank a small glass over 20 minutes. 61%PN, 34%C, 5%PM. Another year down the road and these continue to shine. Orchard fruits, sea breeze, light toast, lemon and chalk define this racy yet refined wine. Fun to drink in tandem with it's '08 Rose stablemate.

(Disgorged in March 2015, 65% Pinot Noir, 5% Meunier and 30% Chardonnay, dosage 8 gr/L) Lovely golden yellow colour with a delicious nose showing hazelnuts, candied citrus notes and white flowers in a still youthful way. Smoothing citrus acidity on the palate combined with red apples fruitiness on the mid and with a touch of ginger on the finish. This is in a very beautiful spot right now, just before starting the transformation into more mature and tertiary notes. (Best 2023-2038)

I love it. On the full bodied site but still elegant and dancing, especially at lower Temperatur. With some time in the glass it becomes more yeasty and floral. A profound Champagne. 2nd of six. Looking forward to the next one, but no hurry. I think it can still go a long way.

Opened for my daughter’s 13th (for parental drinking only). This is still drinking well now albeit a bit more simple than the other 2008’s we have had lately. Easy to drink, lemon, citrus fruit, nicely acidic but more round than crisp. I preferred the 2012 from this producer that I had a few weeks ago. Same as previous scores so I won’t score again (91)
Really couldn’t compare to the Dom I had yesterday but still a damn good champagne. Sweet citrus, lemon, Orange rind, some brioche. Very nice and very open but I think time will bring more complexity vs being a fancy lemonade today.
I really needed to go slow and contemplate this bottle, because on the surface it comes across as quite basic and ordinary. But following it as it progressed with air and at different temperatures revealed layers of intricate fruit and mineral tones that deserve attention and praise. These were the nuances that I was waiting to get out of the wine when I've had it previously and it feels like it's still on the up-slope now. Pretty impressive and still worth acquiring. 5+11+18+9= 93
Corton Rouge Burgs on a Summer Night (Martina, Mpls): Light gold color. Drank a glass over 40 minuntes. 61%PN, 34%C, 5%PM. It's been 18 months since last having this, so it was fun to get a chance to check in. Excellent as always this really performs well, earthy, ocean aromas, citrus zest, lemon, chalk, lime and with great dry extract and tons of minerality. These are killer. 93+pts or better.

Said to be a blend of 60% PN, 35% Chard & 5% Meunier. Every flipping time I drink the '08 I kick myself for not acquiring any! Thankfully a couple buddies went fairly deep and it pops up now & again. Beautifully balanced, mountain stream fresh, complex. Intense in a very classy pampering manner. I think the smart people who jumped on board early bought these in the $60s. I need to own a few of these for myself too! Simply delicious! Thanks Dave! Added to my hunt list :).

As soon as in the glass, in the nose dusty minerals, chalk. Then trademark Veuve orange flowers. As it opens up very intense lavander, other citrus and then bitter herbs. On the palate intense bitter orange, then it matches the minerality displayed on the nose. Crisp, structured acidity that couples with the mineral component to deliver a wine of great structure. Sweetness softens a bit the tartness in this wine. Great balance and I feel that it is evolving very interestingly with more flowery notes. On the second day more evident the pinot noir element with strawberry and flint. Fourth and last bottle I had in the cellar, unfortunately.

This has been drinking well for a year or two but on day 1 this was totally closed, battery acid. Left overnight in the fridge and on day 2 we're back - good persistence, ripe yellow orchard fruits, chalky finish with still some dry extract on the finish suggesting positive development to come. Really good effort from a house that has historically underperformed. ***(*)

NobleRottersSydney - Old riesling night (Fix, St James, Sydney): {cork, 12%} [Geoffrey] Hello – a second tasting so soon! Lovely sourdough nose, but still quite tight. Palate is fresher than the nose, with yeasty characters less evident. Tight lemon flavours. Medium-full weight, with medium-high acidity, Vivid, medium sized bubbles. Vibrant wine that feels like it needs cellaring time to relax a bit. And I had a chance to answer my own question from last month; back of the bottle says disgorgement was 11/17. This information should be on every bottle of Meth. Champ. fizz I reckon, and in this case explains the relative youth of the wine.

NobleRottersSydney - Random night (Fix, St James, Sydney): {cork, 12%} [DavidH] Freshly youthful nose of sourdough and autolysis. Handsome palate, with small/mdium fine bubbles, a medium/full weight, slightly yeasty, subdued, chardonnay-dominant flavours, medium acidity. More texture than flavour. Even palate, medium/long finish. Seems very closed and youthful – seems like it needs more cellaring time (only recently disgorged?)

This is really nice for the price. Toasty with high tension, it improved by about 40% in the glass over a 1 hour period as it warmed up. A good sign for aging...I could see this developing more almond notes with time. Now its a wine that should be chilled to the fullest and slowly drank to allow the hidden notes to emerge...Drink or Hold for 2 years

No formal tasting note-drank during long Saturday of lock down food and wine....
Beautiful example of a great vintage. Lots of citrus, some stone fruit and plenty of autolytic complexity. the structure , tension and acidity of the great 2008 vintage are all there....
Back of the bottle indicates disgorgement in March 2017 , so this spent 8 years (plus or minus) on its lees. The dosage is not indicated , but I am fairly certain this could be bottled as extra brut if they so chose...
After three years post disgorgement this is still going strong and will easily last another 5 plus years in the cellar- likely gaining some complexity.

This is actually much better than I expected, and it turns out to be quite a deal for such a vintage. It shows the characteristics of the vintage, classic, balanced, with underlying power and youth. It drinks extremely well right now, but it might be able to age a few more years too. Nothing unique or exciting, but it has everything I expect from a good Champagne.

Noticeable uptick in development from two years ago and it still seems capable of more. The spectrum of flavors is greater now and the energy and tension feel just as strong. This could still be peaking 10 years from now, in my humble guesstimate. A large format would be a nice birth-year gift come 2029.

Three out of Five Ain't Bad (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): I always enjoy an opportunity to drink this wine. This has been in top form from the start and has been consistent throughout. Bright green apple, apple peel, light bread dough, tingly lemon zest with chalk and wet stone. Shows better than the more introverted '08 Pol Roger at this stage. 93pts.

A cut above the non vintage bottling, albeit a small cut. Very good bubbly, and an excellent value in vintage champagne. En magnum. Everything you want from a big house champagne when serving to a mixed crowd. High quality for the wine people but nothing too "interesting" to put off the novices. Just a touch of toast and vanilla on the nose. Lovely mouthfeel but not too rich. Not too dry or too sweet. The epitome of balance in every respect. Plenty of time for those looking to hold.

Clear and bright nose of green apple and under-ripe pit fruit. Palate is very acidic and direct, without enough depth or complexity to support it. It also tastes over-dosed at just under 8 g/l; I can't say whether that's the product of over-dosing or actually under-dosing, but the sweetness stands out distinctly. Recommend pairing this with a meal. Hoping my last bottle will unravel a bit with time, but I won't be buying any more.

Champagne vs The World (Maple and Ash Chicago, Illinois): While I may like to knock the major houses like Veuve because of all the marketing and branding, it is hard to fault the wines. A blend (I think with pinot noir predominant?) well balanced, orchard fruit, toast, elegance.
Had it w/sashimi & sushi. Not as much as toasty nose as I thought initially. Some bubblegum as suggested from Mrs. Medium body w/a lot of white fruit. Still young, and can use for another few years for sure. Body-wise definitely can build up further.

Yellow color with a wonderful fine mousse that was long lasting. Bouquet and flavor of floral notes, minerals, and citrus. Quite acid and somewhat restrained. Yeasty, toast and cinnamon swirl bread nose. Palate then showed tart apple, yeast and a mineral and saline streak. Finish was crisp, yet mouth watering and lingered easily for 30-45 seconds. Great stuff and probably no rush to drink, tasted incredibly fresh (disgorged 11/2017).

Quince, chalk, lemon pith, steel, panko, and some pumice. Fairly linear and straightforward on the attack. Never fully dropped on the mid-palate, riding superficial through the finish. Medium weight overall, with a stunted expansion of flavors that gave the impression that complexity was not a primary attribute here.
Good enough I guess, but not as special as I’d hoped. This ultimately got lumped in the “ya it’s fine I guess” category. Overall, it drank like any other store-bought sparkler. Food would likely help this wine, but as a stand-alone, its deficiencies are too noticeable to me, especially its lack of layered complexity and depth.

Pale lemon in the glass, showing fine bubbles. Medium expressive nose (usually vintage Veuve has more pronounced aromas) with focus on green/citrus fruit and a good chunk of biscuit, vanilla & cream. Medium-bodied supported by a strong acidity well-integrated with the alcohol. Doesn't have the complexity I was expecting, although it will develop nicely over the upcoming years. No insane potential due to the lack of depth.
Light pale yellow color and good mousse. To the sweet side with marzipan dominating. Also green apples and lemon zest. A pleasure to drink but expected more from an ´08. Only medium acidity and no great complexity there.

(Disgorged in March 2017, 61% Pinot Noir, 5% Meunière and 34% Chardonnay, 5% in oak foudre for one year, dosage 8 gr/l) Pouring the glass revealing that it is starting to show a more yellow colour, but still with an explosion of tiny bubbles that lead way for the classic nose showing bread and butter at first, still very youthful with citrus, peach flowers and some grapefruit zest. Fresh acidic palate showing yellow stone fruit and minerals before the very distinct bittersweet red grapefruit on the nice and long finish. Nice glass development and with an intensity and balanced fruitiness that calls for a long life still ahead for this pleasant and pleasing cuvée! 🍾Best 2023-2038

While the nose presents pronounced, evolved aromas of toast, buttered brioche, dried apricot, lemon, white flowers with a hint of hay and wet stones, the palate falls a bit flat...at least for now. Would recommend waiting another 2 years or so to see how it develops (the medium+ acidity of this cuvée can bear the wait).

Light gold color. From magnum. Drank 2 glasses over an hour. This really is a carbon copy of my note from 4/29/17. "Very enticing both on the nose and palate. This is nicely toasted and still brings plenty of fruit with bright green apple and pear with hints of citrus in the background. The palate feels medium full bodied with nice depth, a brightness to the green fruits and subtle citrus flavors, a brisk clean minerality and medium plus finish. This had it all going quite nicely." Yes, what I said....and to give it a bit more credence, my dad who doesn't get very excited about Champagne suggested it might be the best he'd ever had. Not bad coming from him.

I know it's young and all, but I am not quite as enthusiastic about this as my fellow CT'ers. The bouquet is reticent for this particular bottle, though the palate is generous and effusive. This is young, tightly wound, plenty of energy, but primary and a little agressive. Needs 5-10 years IMHO. Just saw this at Bev Mo at almost double what I bought it for, but the review was spot on: " Light, bright gold, ripe citrus fruits, pear, honeysuckle, minerals on the nose with a touch of vanilla (I didn't get any vanilla!). Depth, juicy, penetrating orchard and citrus fruit flavors." Yep, crisp and tight searing acidity, excellent concentration. Let this sit for a few years! 92-94 potential.

Very accurate upgrade over the yellow label with additional depth and focus. Full bodied, fruity with nice minerality, toasty and some hints of dried fruits as well, complex while retaining freshness. A blend of PN 61%, Ch 34%, PM 5%

Champagne & Food: NV vs Vintage (Bodega Santa Cecilia - Madrid): Aniseed blow on the nose. It evolves towards toasted and dairy memories. Some dried apricots and candied orange but you have to look for it conscientiously. Very light in the mouth with a medium acidity and an abrupt finish. Nothing memorable anyway at this point.
Golpe anisado en nariz. Evoluciona hacia tostados y recuerdos lácteos. Algo de orejones y de naranja confitada pero hay que buscarlo concienzudamente. Muy ligero en boca con una acidez media y un final demasiado rápido. Nada memorable.

Pale gold color. Drank a couple glasses over 2 hours. This was quite a bit different from the first time i had it. This bottle was certainly good,, but not up to the standard set previously. Maybe we're in a dead zone right now or it could be bottle variation. At any rate, this shows a citrus base with hints of apple skin and stone minerals. Not much toast or yeast. Quite an explosive bead though. Very balanced and rather light weight ccurrently. 90+ ti 91pts.

Favored vintage of Delphine Laborde, Veuve winemaker. So I bought. Very feminine, crisp, lithe, lively and elegant. Our guests named it the best champagne they had drunk in memory. Not a powerful wine, but makes one stand a bit at attention in the presence of such lovely winemaking.

Very close to a NV Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label. The body is light. The wine has low acidity. The wine finishes very short. It doesn't feel as aged and complex as a Vintage Moet for example. The wine feels just to watery in my opinion. The quality price ratio is way better on the Yellow Label.

61% Pinot, 34% Chardonnay, 5% Meunier, with 5% of the blend for the first time aged in large oak foudres. Although this should age for an eternity, I popped the cork on one of my bottles to celebrate getting through a rather challenging week. No regrets. The nose is redolent with chalky brine, gentle lemon and lime rinds, green apple, and the beginnings of a rich toast that I think is going to develop for a long time. Palate is a core of juicy blood orange and raspberries along with black cherries and plums, surrounded by a burgeoning halo of cashew and hazelnut butters and big dollops of nougat. Slight oaky tang. More green apple and dusty white candy in the long, long finish. Deep bodied and firm but elegant. If you’ve got one, I recommend patience. This is a legend in transition.

Excellent but not in the least bit ready. Chris really enjoyed. I thought it showed great promise, but it was not even a 10th of what it could be in 10 years. Note to self: HANDS OFF, LADY! Try again in 2027.

This is not your run of the mill Veuve, rather, it's the famous Champagne house's "Vintage" edition from 2008. Far more nuanced and refined than their (admittedly tasty, but quite mainstream) non-vintage bottle, the nose of the 2008 is at once floral and smoky like an honest-to-God fire (I believe our reaction when we tasted this was akin to, "WTF, did they char this oak barrel?"). We also found notes of old, wet brick that alumni of The College of William and Mary (Kathleen and Andrew) will remember all-too-well. The moment when you have your nose in the glass and take your first taste is reminiscent of the telltale green flash of the sunset's penultimate moment… it really sings. There's lots of and lots of brioche toast in the mouth, buttered, with mild jam.

Had at McCarthy & Schiering walk-around tasting. I thought this was very nice. Similar flavor profile to the Veuve Yellow Label NV, but more focused. More citrus-y than yeast-y so if that's where your tastes in Champers lies, you will probably like this.

Just a very small percentage of Meunier. One of the best vintages in Champagne. Dosage is around 8 grams, And the date of disgorgement is on the back. Blend is 60% Pinot, 35% Chardonnay and rest Meunier. 5% went through wood. Maybe you can smell that on the nose but right now more crispy and fresh. Very crispy and intense. Makes you salavate. THat will need tons of time. A great vintage for them.

Midweek with the GMs: Straw, apple, marshmallow a little smoke and oats. Palate has a ripe streak through it, there is good brightness though it isn't overly deep. Decent length and balance.

Bubbly at Green Street Smoked Meats (Chicago, IL): This shows plenty of the white-hot acidity of 2008, but it's well-balanced against a richer profile of fruit and leesiness. There's also a good amount of citrus acidity here that adds freshness. This is a nicely rounded champagne, even if it isn't the most complex.

Dinner at Margaux's Table (Margaux's Table, White Bear Lake, MN): Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. Vert enticing both on the nose and palate. This is nicely toasted and still brings plenty of fruit with bright green apple and pear with hints of citrus in the background. The palate feels medium full bodied with nice depth, a brightness to the green fruits and subtle citrus flavors, a brisk clean minerality and medium plus finish. This had it all going quite nicely. I'll keep my eye open for these.

Did a side by side tasting with a NV Veuve. Higher acidity on the 2008, larger bubbles but they lasted much longer. More fruit on the nose. Would like to give the other bottle I have a few years and re compare. This bottle was only disgorged on 3/2015 so perhaps not too different at this point from a recent NV

(Disgorged in fall of 2015) Light yellow colour with a stream of fine bubbles that explodes in the nose with an expression of baked bread, lemon, minerals and apple fruit. The palate is very youthful with fresh fruityness and with a distinct lemon peel acidity in the long finish. This is a very sharp and acidic cuvée from Clicquot that will keep in the cellar for decades! Best 2023-2038.

2008 top champagnes - horisontal wine tasting dinner (Rest PG (kg arr)): No 8 out of 9 tasted 2008 champagnes. At another (lower) level than the other champagnes Except Claude Cazals ´08.
Blossom, perfume. ripe apple and dried apricot.
My rating is based on performance right now. Will undoubtedly develop more complex notes in the coming years but not at the same level as this evening competitors. I will follow the development in my other btls. - If I only had one btl. I would definitely wait at least 5 years.

Acidité rafraichissante accompagné d'une pointe de sucre brioché et beurrée.

Incipient maturity showing minerals, red berries and cream in a nice and pleasant way. Still showing a distinct and fruitful acidity on the palate with a smoothing nuttiness before the distinct finish showing a distinct lime citrus zest note.

Medium-bodied supported by a strong acidity well-integrated with the alcohol. Doesn't have the complexity I was expecting, although it will develop nicely over the upcoming years. No insane potential due to the lack of depth.

Melon, pleasing citrus (lemon), pleasant nose with just a hint of butterscotch, finish has just a hint of stone. Medium bodied with a good flavor profile from first to last. Nothing outstanding, though more interest than most California Chard.

I know it's young and all, but I am not quite as enthusiastic about this as my fellow CT'ers. The bouquet is reticent for this particular bottle, though the palate is generous and effusive. I would like a touch more cut and bite in the mouthfeel, too. Based on the theory that this will age well, I'll hold my remaining back for awhile. 4+10+16+8= 88

Didn't seem to enjoy this as much as the bottle back in jan. Nice nose of lime, apple and white acacia but no toast. Great mouse, green apple, some almond and just the slightest hint of licorice. Got better and more complex with lots of air. Really nice mouthfeel. Nice champagne but this bottle was not worth the price.
