Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2005 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Blanc De L'Orée 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

First wine of the evening. Generous contribution from CVA. Nicely chilled, PnP.

Deep gold color. Nose of orange zest, marzipan, almond, perfume, yellow liqueur (?!). Palate showing apricot, quince, almonds, orange zest. Rich texture throughout, secondary notes through mid palate displaying a complexity and depth few white wines have,,,. Long and layered finish.

Saved a splash to try later (always a good practice...) and wine continued to improve in the glass. This wine had an amazing showing on this evening. Spectacular white wine, nicely aged and showing beautifully at this stage...well stored bottles have a while to go (10+ years?)

  • 1999 Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Second wine of the evening, contributed by CVA. Decanted and open for about 30 minutes prior to first taste

Medium purple/ruby, cloudy. Nose of old cherry, faint graphite, green pepper. Palate of a tart black cherry, some brambly blackberry and blue fruits, violet. Savory and earth notes through the mid palate. Long and layered finish, (30+ sec).

My first experience with this wine, a real treat to drink. Nicely aged, guessing this was much more viscous/sappy in its youth(?) At this stage its graceful and expressive, finish is notable.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Penfolds Grange 96 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Third wine of the evening. Pured from a beautiful decanter (not that it means anything to the wine...but wine service at this restaurant was particularly good...) Had been open about an hour by the time we drank it...Generous contribution from Andrew

Dark garnet color, mild separation. Early on the nose was caramel, cedar...after about an hour the dark cherry, leather showed up. Palate was dark cherry, leather, savory notes. Cedar, kelp/saline character on the mid palate. Full bodied and long finish.

Great showing on this evening. Fortunate that this is my second tasting of this vintage this year - prior tasting was excellent as well. I had more time to spend with it on this tasting. The wine evolved nicely in the glass over the course of the evening. Grange for me is always one of the stars of the show...

  • 2001 Ridge Monte Bello 97 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

One of my contributions for the evening. First bottle from an OWC in my cellars for some time and my first tasting of this vintage of MB. Really fun to taste this with some great wine friends...Decanted for about 90 minutes by the time we got to this.

Dark garnet color, no signs of age. Nose showing dark fruits, currants/cherry, pencil and sweet tobacco. Smooth and elegant texture. Palate showing dark cherry, spice, leather and black licorice. Tannins still present but softening a bit. Full bodied, long and layered finish.

The 2001 has been a much hyped vintage of MB - 40th anniversary and ripeness of the vintage - so I was eager to try it. Happy to say the wine lives up to the hype (IMO). Beautiful showing on this evening. At the beginning of a long drinking window, will be fun to drink this as it evolves. May be one of the Monte Bellos with a 50 year life? May score higher in another 5 years

  • 2009 Sine Qua Non Syrah This is Not An Exit Eleven Confessions Vineyard 95 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Last wine of the evening, had been open 2+ hours by the time we got to it. One of my contributions, had to include a Syrah when drinking with Andrew.

Dark, vivid ruby color. Nose had some Northern Rhone characteristics when first drinking (earth and savory), evolving into cherry, blueberry, floral/violet, smoke. Rich palate of dark berries, cherry/chocolate, licorice, spices, vanilla and floral notes. Has a sweetness and persistence through the mid palate. Tannins are smoothed, full bodied and long finish.

Really excellent on this evening, nice way to finish the evening. At this point, the decant helped, it was tight when opened. Showing well after being open almost 2 hours. Not the fruit bomb I thought it might be from the reviews. In a great place but still on the young side (IMO), should continue to evolve and drink well for another 10+ years.
