Introduction

The theme for the evening was basically super second growths. We had a nice group of eight for what was an outstanding tasting. This was a very fast moving tasting and my notes may reflect that along with the time since the tasting.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2009 Château de Fieuzal Blanc 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Light gold color. Drank a small glass over 40 minutes. I didn’t take many nots on this, but De Fieuzal a producer that I always enjoy and this was not an exception. At 10 years now, this was drinking great. There is a very good toasted character to the bright citrus and peach flavors and this has excellent depth and power.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1983 Château Léoville Poyferré 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. We drank this with the ’83 Montrose that stole the show, but the ’83 Poyferre was not to be overlooked either. Maybe a bit more austere, but a fine aged claret it is. Pencil, cherry, cassis on the nose. The palate is dominated by the pencil lead and a dried wood feel, darker fruit – more to cassis, on the medium full bodied palate. Maybe a tad thinner on the palate and little high toned at times. By itself this would have impressed more so. 92+ to 93pts.

  • 1983 Château Montrose 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Very dark red color. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Checked with my Coravin in the afternoon – this was really siniging so made the call to go PNP. FWIW, I tape over the opening as well checking. Turned out to be a good decision, though this really did get even better over 30+ minutes and never tailed off over 2+ hours. P:oured at about 63F and this was a wow wine from the start. Bright and evocative from the start; super perfumed, dried violets, cassis, earth and hints of truffle. The palate is full bodied with wonderful lift and while the texture is amazing and the tannins are satiny, this has the bones to ages for a lot longer and I can see it improving yet. Cassis, boysenberry, pencil, truffle earth, flora; very long, perfectly balanced, rather sublime to say the least. Gotta love it when they exceed expectations.

Flight 5 (4 Notes)

  • 1955 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Dark red color with a 2cm bricked margin. Starting a run of ’55, ’70, ’89. And ’95 Ducru. There was some initial concern about this bottle on opening, but it turned out just fine. Some of these just need that 15 minutes of air to kick start the old bones. Really improved for 15 to 30 minutes more. Dried leaves, pencil shavings, old cigar, dried flowers and red berries. The palate is medium bodied with polished tannins and a little tartness to the red berries. Very nice nose that exceeds the palate just a bit.

  • 1970 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very dark red color, 7mm transitional margin. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. From a series of ’55, ’70, ’89. And ’95 Ducru.
This was a wow, drinking great. Dense and full bodied, very silky on the palate, graphite, dark fruits that are quite lively, earth and minerality here with a long finish. Excellent. 94+ to 95pts.

  • 1989 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very dark red color. PNP. Drank a glass over an hour. From a run of ’55, ’70, ’89. And ’95 Ducru. Dry, firm, dark fruits, lots of oak still showing, getting better, still drinks young. Dry, firm, dark fruits, lots of oak still showing, getting better, still drinks young.

  • 1995 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very dark red/purple color. Double decanted for 3.5hrs. Drank a glass over an hour. From a run of ’55, ’70, ’89. And ’95 Ducru. This is another dense, full bodied wine. This comes off really young despite all the air. Sometimes you just can’t shake it lose. Dark fruit, gravel, tart black fruits, cassis, blackberry, gritty tannins. Good potential – maybe in 10 years with a check in around 5 or so.

Flight 6 (2 Notes)

  • 1985 Château Pape Clément 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Very dark red color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Really good, scorched earth on the nose, earthy, tar, great blackberry nose. Full bodied and layered on the palate, scorched earth, earth, graphite, a mix of red and black fruits, cassis, crazy youthful for 34 years. This can go 20 more easy. Loved it.

  • 1999 Château Léoville Poyferré 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very dark red color. Splash double decanted and recorked 12 hours before serving. Drank a glass over 30 minutes plus. This got a little lost in the shuffle of a fast moving train of wines. Some thought this more modern, but I I thought it was really good, sneaky good in fact. Sultry, tart cassis and dark berries, good minerality and an earthy perfume. 92(+)pts.
