Introduction

The second tasting from this years working with wine gave us the opportunity to look at Burgundy with a specific focus on the wines of Domaine Dujac.

Flight 1 - Bracket one - A journey from north to south (5 Notes)

Balance was the key take out for this bracket. The Faively was a bit of a disappointment though.

Flight 2 - Bracket two - The 2014 Vintage through a Dujac prism (4 Notes)

The bracket was designed to demonstrate quality. It worked. A hypothesis was also posed - does irrigation increase stalk impact?

  • 2014 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

Cedar, sweetly spiced, fruit is muted beneath this; a touch of cherry, slightly funky. A tiny alcohol warmth initially, tight tannins fruit muted beneath this. Juicy. Medium length. Hmm.

  • 2014 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Polished, savoury, sweet spice, baking spices especially, a little pretty cherry on the nose. In the mouth it's juicy , fleshy and, well, desirable. Fruit is slapped around by the silky though chewy tannins but survives to persist and travel medium plus length with those backed spices and a touch of coffee grain. Nice.

  • 2014 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Medium plus intensity aromas are rich tending to voluptuous, smells dense, berry, cherry, sweetly spice. Oh hello! Fills the palate - generously rich, gracious though, complex, lots going on, layered and textured, wonderfully balanced the fruit and tannins travel very long hand in hand. Lovely.

  • 2014 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

A little stalks here - an ashy undercurrent, a little coffee and mushroom the stales aromas lend a touch of sourness to the strawberry and cherry fruit, it's perfumed but also has plenty of sweet (and oak) spice. Juicy, dense, fleshy, tight tannins, rich without being overpowering. the stalks lend a slightly menthol note on the palate, plenty of red berry and cherry fruit. Long.

Flight 3 - Bracket three - A vertical of Aux Combottes (5 Notes)

What a pleasant bracket. Pity about the 2006. No move was made to replace it. The 2002 was my favourite.

  • 2015 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

sweetly spiced, blackberry, slightly jubey, slight car. Biscuit. Smells very compared to the other wines n the bracket (appropriately). Initially juicy with generous fruit then tight grippy , chewy, muscular tannins close things down and the fruit is lost beneath this. Based on the other vintages I'd say time...

  • 2010 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Very slight stalks here, black hued fruit, sweet spice, a little cream, something pretty and confected that helps the nose to the more beguiling space. Juicy acid on the palate with plenty of spice, muted black fruits, tight talc textured tannins, slight dried orange and orchard fruit note as well on the finish.

  • 2006 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Initially slight cork taint which grows with time. There is a hint of black fruit on the palate but this is, for me, very much FLAW.

  • 2002 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Mushrooms, earthy, cold and wet; autumnal fruit, wet loves over blackberry, with time in the glass the stalks start to show a little and are move evident on the palate lending a herbaceous quite but this is also pleasingly juicy, fleshy and, well, extremely pleasant well balanced. Yum.

  • 1999 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

there is an ashy stalky quality here, a touch of bonfire, leather, spice, black fruits, A little sourly juicy fruit o the palate backed by leather. There is also a touch of alcohol warmth, tannins are tight and grainy textured. Fruit is muted. A bit meh for me.

Flight 4 - Bracket four - New World Pinot Noir - New Zealand (5 Notes)

Hmm. I’m usually a massive fan of Fromm wines but this one wasn't the best I've tasted. The McCrone Pinot from Ata Rangi was probably the pick of the bunch.

  • 2017 Fromm Pinot Noir Clayvin Vineyard

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

Plenty of pretty but big berry and cherry fruit backed by a fair amount of funky wild ferment, I even get a touch of reductiveness this initial. The palate is a reflection of the nose. Quite black, flour textured tannic burr dominate the fruit. Nice but simple at the moment it does settle with time in the glass (and agitation). Come back in a few years.

  • 2017 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir

New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough

Clean, cream, vanilla, polished red berries, strawberries and raspberries, very slight wood glue and struck match, stalks. Juicy acidity, slightly chalky tannins dry the palate, the fruit a little more sour n the mouth. There is also a touch of alcohol heat o the finish.

  • 2015 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir

New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough

A little gamey, again polished red berry; strawberries and raspberry, biscuit, a touch of wood glue that strays towards the volatile for me. Pointy acid, a little herbaceous, almost stalky, tannins are talc textured, quite silky though slightly drying. Fruit is a little muted. Hmm.

  • 2015 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir McCrone

New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough

Again polished fruit but more dark hued here with flattering oak, savoury spice. The palate proves savoury and very slightly sour, slightly grainy tannins on the mid palate, the black berry fruit is more present, quite dense. Time will probably help.

  • 2015 Valli Pinot Noir Bannockburn Vineyard

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Smells big and bold, blackberry and Ribena, again a little wood glue/volatile note, a little spice very savoury and earthy. In the mouth it's juicy, tight, quite young still, black fruit, I ripe, the tannins are silkier than the e.g. ata rangi's lending more of a fleshy feel, bit. with time a little stalks on the nose. Hmm

Flight 5 - Bracket five - New World Pinot Noir - Australia (5 Notes)

I did enjoy the cottage block…the tannin structure was particularly appealing

  • 2016 Ashton Hills Pinot Noir Reserve

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

Unfined and unfiltered, positively cloudy in fact! A little smoked black tea, savoury spice, smells wet with a muted red currant note. In the mouth it's juicy and spicy and a lot warmer, riper and richer than the nose implies whilst retaining a touch of modest simplicity

  • 2016 Kooyong Pinot Noir Haven

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula

Saline, seaside initially, slight stalks, pretty cherry, perfume but with a slightly baked biscuit quality and polished oak. Juicy, pretty, slightly saline with cherry and a fair alcoholic heft on the back of the throat, silky tannins, a little herbaceous note on the palate as well.

  • 2017 Dalrymple Vineyards Pinot Noir Cottage Block

    Australia, Tasmania, Pipers River

Medium minus intensity aromas of stalks, black tea, herbaceous, a meaty/iron quality, a little bac hued fruit pees out from behind this. N the mouth it's juicy ,stalks are less present but the tannins are big and 'grabby' and, well, pretty wonderfully tooled and textured. The black fruit backs this but it's all about that tannin for me. Yum.

  • 2017 Dalrymple Vineyards Pinot Noir Single Site Coal River

    Australia, Tasmania, Coal River

Floral, riper red berry and cherry, very pretty juicy, stalks are present but in a more 'supportive' role here on the nose. The fruit is a tiny bit more sour o the palate, thought still present, the tannins are silky with a floury textured with a touch of stalks on the finish.

  • 2014 Dalrymple Vineyards Pinot Noir Single Site Coal River

    Australia, Tasmania, Coal River

Funky, gamey, positively meaty in fact, savoury black fruit, a little biscuit. Juicy, savoury with the same black fruit, tannins are drying but still quite silky talc textured. Slight stalks on the finish as well.

Closing

Woof. What a tasting. I was impressed by the lack of obvious stalks in the majority of the Dujac's despite the relatively high proportion of whole bunch here.
