Introduction

The non-Pinot reds were double decanted for 3-5 hours. The pairs were served double blind in side by side Riedel Gourmet glasses.

Flight 1 - The Opener (1 Note)

  • 2017 King Estate Pinot Gris Paradox 90 Points

    USA, Oregon

So the "King Estate" is upside down and they oaked it a bit, the paradox is paying $30 for a Pinot Gris! Lots of $20 versions of PG could compete. That said, it's a fine wine with white stone fruit, melon, white citrus, beeswax, oak, saline and modest florals. Nice acidity helps it stand up to a rich brie en croute. Now-2022.

Flight 2 - 2017 Oregon Pinot Noir (2 Notes)

Local smoked salmon was the featured match

  • 2017 Colene Clemens Pinot Noir Margo 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains

Tighter of the two, this bottle had more red cherry then the black fruited AS Arcus. There's pomegranate, raspberry, spice, and a floral note. Loser 8 to 3 but all said they'd rather have 3 of these than 1 Archery Summit. Give it 6 more months or a decant through 2025.

  • 2017 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Arcus Vineyard 94 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

This bottle had an open nose with black cherry and plum, forest, funk and florals! Great texture and length. 94+ with no drop off on day 2. Now-2027. Winner of its pair: 8-3.

Flight 3 - 2015 CdP (2 Notes)

Smoked hazelnuts

Flight 4 - 2014 Napa Cabs (2 Notes)

Minted goat cheese

  • 2014 Hall Cabernet Sauvignon Terra Secca 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Same score for me as in my 1/18 note:

"Black and red cherry, plum, mocha, and oak on a tannic frame. Some stone and mineral notes dot the finish with an exclamation mark. 91 on day 2. Decant or wait. Best 2019-2025. (1412 views)"

The cherry notes were more blackberry this time, really nice evolution. 92 on day 2. Same window.

  • 2014 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

A deep dark 18 pound bowling bowl heading down the palate alley! Black and blue fruit, mocha, mint, wet stone and spice go on and on with a really nice texture. No gutter ball here and no fall off on day 2! Now-2030. 7-4 winner vs. Hall Terra Secca.

Flight 5 - 2010 Bordeaux (2 Notes)

Iberico pork loin

  • 2010 Château Croix Mouton (Jean-Philippe Janoueix) 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur

I knew this didn't have a chance for "the win". But I thought that, if it was a good bottle, it might spur some conversation about its QPR and "yes! I'll have 5 of these over one Lagrange"
All wine has some VA measurable in a lab, this bottle had just enough to measure it on your palate. Not enough to call it flawed and most tasters that night thought they would've finished the bottle if they opened it with dinner. It was more obvious on day 2 after some fruit faded.
Black cherry / berry, spice and oak notes with some structure made it ok. I'm going to open another one soon.

  • 2010 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

MY WOTNN (next night)! Creme de cassis, blackberry, plum, cigar box, graphite, spice and stone that linger like a Super Bowl half time show. 94+, stayed there on day 2. Has ten years. 11-0 winner.

Flight 6 - Dessert (1 Note)

The best cheese in the world came from this creamery! No kidding!

Closing

The big hitters were always picked as fave by the group but, with the exception of the SLIGHTLY tainted Bordeaux, we'd all take the multiple cheaper bottles over one $$$ bottle!
