France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Lots of apple and lemon with background floral and spice hints. Extremely bright and energetic through long finish. Very good length. Upside from here.
Small glass, brief note. Served blind. I thought it was a Rose from 100% Pinot Noir from a powerful and ripe vintage, perhaps 1976. Still somewhat effervescent, with very good weight. On the tired side, but eminently interesting and fun. We were told this was the first vintage made.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Very rich start with ripe pear and quince with floral charm. Similarly rich flavors to start, the leaner with some lemon from middle forward, and a slightly backward finish. Excellent Grand Cru density, but the nuance is just hinting at this great wine’s full potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Very small glass, brief note. Plenty of yellow and green apple throughout with floral notes. On the tart side with very impressive concentration and bright, energetic finish.
Small glass, brief note. This wine didn’t get the air it deserved and needed. Lots of black cherry and plum but tannins just as prominent. Much like other bottles from the past few years, but decanting / aeration enables those to come across as much softer and charming.
Small glass, brief note. From magnum. Tough to appreciate in context of all tonight’s older wines, but this is fleshy and powerful with the structure one step behind all the fantastic black fruit, roasted meat and both sweet and savory spice. Shockingly enjoyable already.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Directly from the Domaine. Red and black cherry, faintly spiced, with subtle ripeness. A wine of great finesse with good+ weight and great textures throughout. Good now through 2050.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Reduction made this tough to fairly/ completely assess, but it was also surprisingly tropical for the vintage and showing slightly awkward textures and balance in the few minutes I spent with the wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Served alongside the 2012. Rich and opulent floral start with a broad cross-section of apple and baked apple aromas and flavors, supplemented with mint, spice and fresh garden herbs. So rich, long and balanced. Sensational and stunning now, with upside.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Served alongside the (slightly more brilliant) 2010. Plenty of apple, pear and some lemon with mint and floral support. Extremely ripe and elegantly textured with a stunningly long finish. My first time having this wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Dark color, but no worries. Extremely rich and dense with so much lively fruit along with complex evolving layers that kept unfolding. Unctuous textures. Brilliant wine. Thanks, Chet!
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Ripe black and red cherry with sweet hints of maderization just starting and plenty of slowly cooked mushroom. Good weight, good+ length, great complexity. Incredible brightness for its age and challenges of making War wine. Another brilliant wine. Served double blind. Clearly mature Burgundy, fairly clearly Grand Cru. I thought 1979 from Gevrey. Oops. Thanks for sharing, Jim!
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Popped and poured, then tasted at least four times over the next two hours. It is immediately clear this is a powerhouse of a wine, even with the reduction that took 15+ minutes to disappear. Complex peach, apple and pear aromas with floral, vanilla and sweet spice notes. Legendary concentration and length. The fruit is clearly ripe, but a slightly tart background bassline seemed to gradually emerge that adding another intriguing nuance. This started out as slightly monolithic, and slowly emerged from its shell with more air and as it warmed up. Best taste was the last, when between cellar and room temperature. Great now, upside from here.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Lingering fruit gave its regards before quickly departing, leaving an intriguingly earthy and weighty wine. Very interesting, but more interesting than tasty. Thanks, Mark, for sharing!
Small glass, brief note. Lots of dense black cherry and currant with spice and cedar hints. Surprisingly near-elegant and accessible with really bright and energetic textures that thrilled me.
Small glass, brief note. Lots here but an odd combination of brooding fruit and earth character. I liked this, but wasn't wow'ed and left scratching my head, asking myself if it is getting tired or still too young.
Small glass, brief note. Bottle directly from the domaine. Dense red cherries everywhere, mostly ripe but very complex and layered.Ripe start, then an increasing degree of nuance starting emerging from everywhere. An exceptional Bourgogne, but market priced accordingly.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass from magnum, brief note. Apple and lemon curd with enticing floral charm throughout with bright textures supporting this to a long, exciting, expanding finish. It is a crazy night when this is the 4th best Montrachet I tasted.
Small glass, brief note. Powerful, burly and brooding black fruit, still dominated by its tannins. An easy wine to admire in many ways, but a difficult wine to enjoy.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Ripe and robust red cherries are maturing gracefully and elegantly with almost as much earth, and polished textures. Very good length, persistent from start-to-finish with good weight.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Tasted alongside the 2001, I was able to taste, compare and contrast for 15-20 minutes. Complex array of red and black cherry with seamless textures and absolutely impeccable balance. While the 2001 is wonderful, this charmer makes that seem nearly awkward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Tasted alongside the 2000, I was able to taste, compare and contrast for 15-20 minutes. Bigger than the 2000 with black and red berries galore, with very good weight and length. Tonight's bottle came across as still firmly structured, so probable upside based on this bottle.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Still vibrant red cherry with plenty of earth, but yet so clean. Silky textures and very good length, even though lighter styled with moderate-good weight having softened with age.
Late night, small glass, brief note. Caramel apple and fig, still holding steady with significant depth for a 200 yo wine. Wow. Thanks for sharing, Mark!
Late night, small glass, brief note. Apple and lemon zest with very good + concentration and length for its level, even if ending with a slightly tart finish.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
Late night, small glass, brief note. Really sensational aromas with so much baking spice, mature red berry and cherry and floral notes. Good flavors, just more tired, less intense.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Late night, small glass, brief note. Ripe and rich with sweet spice, but this manages to provide great acidity throughout, and is wonderfully bright for a 2005. Very good now.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Late night, small glass, brief note. Dense, meaty, great concentration. Still somewhat backward and fleshy, this has so much great stuff, but needs more time.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Bright apple with alluring spice, particularly on nose. Flavors might be more subdued, by well supported with lots of bright energy. Elegant, near weightless textures. Excellent.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Rich start, brighter middle through finish, with good stuffing on expanding finish. Good now with upside, 92+ point potential.
Small glass, brief note. From 3L. ripe peach and apple with some lemon curd. Ripe and starting to mature with moderate energy. Good density. A vintage to enjoy over the next few years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Small glass from 3L, brief note. This is the "Domaine Louis Jadot" cuvee from Folatières proper. Rich and dense for the vintage with some more fat than typical, particularly to start. Leaner in the middle, but still rich. Probably best now through 2024.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Late night, small glass, brief note. Lots of ripe red fruit with an intense old vine concentration and richness with minerally textures and very soft tannins. Good now.
Late night, small glass from large format, brief note. Massive and ultra ripe black fruit with sweet spice. Intense concentration and weight, there is nothing demure about this wine. Easy to appreciate, even if it's not exactly my style of wine, particularly as it finishes on the warm side.
2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Floral start with ripe and fleshy apples through. Very good length, soft finish. Good now.
