Complex and enticing orchard fruit throughout with very good balance, good depth. Both rich and fresh, in a very enjoyable combination already now. Very tasty indeed.
My first time tasting Lignier Aligoté, this was unmistakably Aligoté with its lean, tart character with just enough richness from the vintage to come across as enjoyable and balanced. Drink young.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Very impressive on all fronts, even if slightly reductive to start. Lots of orchard fruit with an intense richness and charmingly fresh with upside. Served double blind, I correctly identified vintage and appellation, but didn’t get anything else from there.
Served double blind to tonight’s group, everybody thought this from Burgundy and I’d likely would have agreed if I had not brought the wine. Plenty of ripe Orchard fruit with roasted walnuts and nicely spiced, ending with an energetic finish. Very balanced and elegant. Probably better in another year or three.
Probably opened too young, but I needed to open a good Michigan wine in response to the election results. Rich and ripe red cherry throughout with a slightly candied (and perhaps too ripe) character, but enough structure to keep this close to charming and balanced with good/medium weight. Better in another year or two.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Served double blind. Very tasty and rich, but this really barely showed signs of clos de la Roche terroir. New oak still too pronounced, which detracted from showing Grand Cru density for me. But still, very rich and tasty.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Lots here, but still very firm throughout. I still like the potential, but am finding more 199s coming around at this point than Clos de Tart has shown the past few times tasted. But I remain somewhere between confident and hopeful on its 92+ point potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
Second of two bottles tonight (first was corked), and this 2nd bottle was glorious despite getting little air. Rich black and red cherry aromas with savory spice and faint roasted meat hints. Slightly les complete or complex flavors, but still completely inviting and balanced. So good now, with possible further upside.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Very enjoyable on every level with good balance of fresh and mature fruit character. Not particularly classically "Gevrey" or even Grand Cru, but very easy to enjoy.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
This had been opened 3 hours earlier with 30 minutes in a decanter. Ripe and inviting aromas with lots of power and Chinese five spice. Similar flavors with some firm tannins in the middle, but very balanced and entering its drinking window. Very long finish, this is a rare 2005 Grand Cru that is already enjoyable at this early phase in its evolution.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Very good combination of red and black cherry, earth, savory spice, showing slightly more mature than fresh character. Good weight, better length. Still in its peak drinking window, but slightly better few years back. Served immediately after the Jadot 2005 Echezeaux, which probably didn't help this wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Served double blind to the group. Very impressive concentration and a seamless, bright structure without any rough edges too common in too many 2011s. Black and red cherry throughout with background savory spice and roasted meat, with very good length. This will easily drink well for another decade+.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Served double blind immediately after the Burguet. This showed more spice and almost as much fruit, but just less textural excitement. Still very good, certainly in its peak drinking window.
Very impressive, this ran the risk of getting lost in a sea of great Grand Cru Burgundy, but easily held its own. Red cherry and plum are maturing gracefully and elegantly with enough of a combination with woodsy spice, earth and meat to come across as complex and elegant. Very classic Rioja style.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
Served double blind, this is a true head-turner. Floral and spiced with black and red fruit, this is a cornucopia of early fall aromas and flavors with so much going on. I immediately thought this Grand Cru Burgundy and the spice character made me think there was considerable whole cluster, but in hindsight that might be the effect of 2010's millerandage. There was a power and meatiness that added further complexity and charm. I don't have considerable experience with Amiot-Servelle from this era, but have been thrilled with the few 2010s I have tasted.
There was nothing bad that could be said about Michigan tonight. This wine showed clear Gewürztraminer floral and nutty character, even if it was not particularly thrilling wine.
This had a late harvest sweetness with enough concentration that enabled it to almost be enjoyable if you weren't paying too much attention. Good enough for an <$15 bottle.
I guess this Riesling or some Riesling blend, and again sweetness hides many vinous flaws, so this was certainly better than i expected from my first ever Wisconsin wine.
