I continue to have mixed results with Clos des Goisses -- theres an earthiness here that always sticks out for me and distracts from the purity and brightness of fruit that I love in Champagne. Texturally appealing and still quite fresh.
67x4 flight. Deceptively youthful in appearance and on the palate. Rich, chewy plum fruit with lots of licorice and herb. So young and a standout in the flight for its youthfulness.
67x4 flight. Nearly translucent ruby with a haunting smoky black cherry. Picks up weight and intensity with more time in the glass. Excellent though not as thrilling as bottle 3 years ago.
67x4. So Burgundian with a killer intense nose of smoky, stemmy black fruit. Suave and grippy on the palate. My favorite by a hair over the Cappellano.
All class and elegance with smoky, herby, tarry dried fruit. So balanced with ethereal fruit and sneaky structure. This so aa long slow-ox and was much, much better than a pop n' pour bottle from 3 years ago.
89 Sperss/Sori Tildin pair is quintessential Gaja. Big, rich, still-toasty unctuous red fruit. The Siri Tildin pulls off the style better than Sperss. Both delicious.

96/99/00 Flight. 1999 was the star with a lot of everything — fruit, complexity, structure and pristine balance. Firing on all cylinders with a couple decades of peak drinking ahead.
96/99/00 Flight. 2000 is the most flamboyant and approachable now, though probably the weakest of the three vintages. Still delicious in its own right.
Monprivato x5. While drinking the 2008 pair is infanticide, the Ca is clearly the superior wine with incredible depth and concentration while defying gravity with its weightlessness. Wow.
Monprivato x5. This is the most is a touch flabby relative to the other four though still classic in flavor. Won't be as long lived as the 1990, though that's a high bar.
Monprivato x5. This was great but will be even better with another decade in the cellar. In the mold of the 1990 with great fruit concentration and balancing structure. Everything is in place for this wine to shine in 5-10+ years.
2002 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Rare
France, Champagne
An unabashedly opulent, rich and creamy Champagne with plenty of energy and zest to buttress the opulence. Delicious.

2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne

Such a terrific vintage that continues to drink well young. Rich, chalky, toasty, powerful orchard fruit with terrific precision and length.

2015 Enrico Serafino Alta Langa
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Alta Langa
Served blind this well exceeded expectations. I was convinced it was a big house Champagne TdC with its richness and density. Good value.

1967 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
67x4. The most advanced and ornery of the flight. Fine in its own right but not as fresh, giving or interesting as the others.

1989 Gaja Barolo Sperss
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
89 Sperss/Sori Tildin pair is quintessential Gaja. Big, rich, still-toasty unctuous red fruit. The Siri Tildin pulls off the style better than Sperss. Both delicious.

1999 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
1999/2000 Barolo pair. While this is great it has a degree of brawn and structure that will shine with more time. Better on night two.

2000 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Santo Stefano
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
99/00 SS & 00 Asili Riserva Flight. This is deliciously in peak form and surprisingly a near equal to the Asili Red label.

2000 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Asili
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
99/00 SS & 00 Asili Riserva Flight. A good bottle, but lacking depth and sophistication that you’d expect of a red label.

2000 Cappellano Barolo Piè Rupestris Otin Fiorin (Gabutti)

2000 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Solid if understated and less interesting than the 00 Cappellano served side-by-side. Unclear whether more time will help.

2008 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Monprivato x5. Very primary despite a 10+ hour decant. Shows lots of sweet and toasty fruit that needs lots of time to mellow out and develop nuance.
