Really nice right now. Opening this at age 23 reveals a wine that lives up to this producer's reputation.
Dust, ripe black cherry, dried cranberry older leather, blood, clove, cola nut (with no sweetness at all), dried porcini mushroom. There's a certain muskiness aroma that really works for me. The palate adds black olives (on both the beginning and the end of the palate), blue cheese, smoked pork, tar and black licorice. Balsamic on the finish. Intensity of both flavors and aromas is both HIGH.
Full body with medium + acid and smooth medium tannin. Minute + long finish showing black olives and balsamic notes. I really like where this is; though of course it could go longer. I see it staying where it is OR improving over the next ten years; but I have absolutely no regrets that I opened this now.
Great pairing with Ragu di Cinghiale

1999 2000 Barolo Barbaresco (Gemma): Impressions. Minty, orange peel finish with slight Chinese herb notes. Tannins resolved but finish rather bitter

Pronounced nose intensity with notes of mushroom, spices, toast, dried cranberries. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin.

Birthday Celebration (State Street Manor & Racquet Club - Chicago IL): Walk around tasting, brief note from memory. Not powerful or flashy, but so complex, layered, and harmonious. My preferred style of Barolo. Will easily drink well for another decade+.

A Good Tuesday, Vol. VII: Italians: B Mascarello, E Pepe, Occhipinti, Burlotto, Barisone, Molettieri...: Blind. Youthful. Wound up. Power. Tar. Cherry. Leather. Finesse. Serious. Bright acidity. Very good with the lasagna, actually. Still some tannin and structure. Emerging now with years to go.
