Introduction
This is our 2nd of three Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru tastings. We started last week with the 1er Crus from the far northern end of the appellation, near the combe, and continued today with wine mostly from Clos St Jacques and Lavaux St Jacques, plus the nearby vineyards. We will conclude with the 1er Cru vineyards near town center.

Vibrant and powerful at the same time, just a bit precocious and nearly awkward. Very good now with upside.

1999 Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 92 Points

Dense, all black (ripe) fruit with intense concentration. At one level there is so much here, but at another level, it is a concentrated wine that relies on that intensity for everything. Is that good? Not good? I certainly like this a lot, but just want a little more. Am I being fair?

Black fruit throughout with very impressive richness and density, yet also well balanced. I had opened this 2+ hours before serving and divided the bottle for 7 tasters, yet it stayed bright and fresh, in fact clearly opening and improving in glass. Group was evenly split preferring this vs the Dugat-Py, but I was clearly preferring this wine.

Earthy and meaty with some cooked mushroom. Good depth, just less intense bd the rest of this great LSJ flight. Enjoy now.

At a greet place now, black fruit comes across as elegantly mature with roasted and raw meat, powerful while restrained. Meaty braised meat spice everywhere. At its peak now. Aging gracefully. Group WOTN, but I think 2002 was better by the end.

So much here, but still slightly backward and awkward. Kept hinting at its potential, but never fully pleasurable, I think(?) it has great potential going forward. Patience required.

Opened a few hours before tasting, yet this kept getting better and better and better with more air. All black fruit wit roasted meat and some raw meat, this turned into a charmingly powerful wine. My WOTN by the end.

Still slightly awkward and firm, but with so much black fruit and roasted meat. Dense and powerful now, but not “there” now.

Very good now, but on the simple side vs the other wines tonight. Good balance and fun/ ready to enjoy now, unlikely further upside.

Very rich and powerful in a seemingly modern style, this is the one wine tonight in which new oak protruded for me. But at the same time, there is so much rich tastiness here that it is delightful and still wonderfully fresh.

Mature black cherry with meaty character and woodsy spice. Good enough weight, but the star here is its impeccable balance and elegance. Good+ length.

Slightly underwhelming. Starts out like many rich 2006s, but this shortened up in glass and showed some drying tannins on finish. Good+ weight and depth, but slightly clumsy.
