Introduction

Third in our three-part series on C-V

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

09/10 single blind. Unlike most 09/10 pairings, these were more difficult to distinguish though I ultimately correctly guessed this as the 2009 as it was just slightly more dark fruited and brooding. Aromatically tight and very well structured to match the ripe, concentrated fruit. Just not all that forthcoming. Some said it was '2005 like', which made sense to me. Hold for 5-10+ years.

  • 2010 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

09/10 single blind. One of the more closed in and firm 2010s tasted in recent memory and therefore making it tougher to pick out in the pair. Ultimately this is slightly more accessible and approachable than the 2009, though its still a work in progress and not near its peak form. Good fruit density in the nose, but fairly tight and not nuanced aromatically. Plenty of rich fruit that is still holding back and constrained. Needs another 5-10+ years. Old Jadot Vougeot drinks better than young Jadot Vougeot, IMHO.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

10VV/10/09VV single blind. A wow nose that has a range of red and black cherry with intense, layered aromas of florals, earth and spice. Such a complete wine that gains weight and energy in the glass. Complex fruit with purity. Long. Already drinking so well, but this should continue to improve.

  • 2010 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

10VV/10/09VV single blind. Delicious and drinking with a lot of youthful pleasure if somewhat primary and waiting for that nuance to emerge. Just a touch less depth than the other two wines and therefore deduced as the classique in the line up.

  • 2009 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

10VV/10/09VV single blind. A huge boastful nose that is loaded with fruit, florals and spice. Rich, ripe, lush and concentrated fruit. Suave tannins provide structure and balance. All the bones to age for 20+ years. A small glass on night two was even better with more spice nuance.

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 2014 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

14/08/07. Open for business with youthful fruit that shows some herbal, stem and spice complexity in the nose. Palate is primary though filled with exciting spice. Good concentration and structure to age. Fun and tasty with upside as it gains nuance and depth.

  • 2008 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

14/08/07. Similar in profile to the 2014 and still quite youthful with pure red fruits and spice. The palate has a firm, serious acid structure that provides brightness but also a degree of restraint. Better in 3-5+ years.

  • 2007 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

14/08/07. Decidedly more mature than the other two wines in the flight with an earthen cherry aromas that also has nice spice complexity. Earthy meaty, cherry on the palate is fun and easy to drink. Structure is now essentially resolved and this has peaked. No further upside but should hold.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 1979 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

A rare treat. Absolutely majestic and regal nose. Full, enthralling aromas of dried fruits, dried florals, decayed earth and soil and old leather. The palate still has silky fruit that glides across the palate with energetic complexity. So balanced even at this age. Long, ethereal finish. According to the domaine, '79 was rough with serious hail damage in August, leading to two harvests, the second of which was used for Fine du Clos de Vougeot that was recently released. Extra points for the magic of Burgundy here.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 1985 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

85/90/97. A glorious aged Burgundy from a spectacular vintage. Epic nose that is full, intense and complex with a mix of fresh and dried fruit, fresh and dried florals and all kinds of spice. Full, enveloping, rich fruit that is vibrant and pure. Lots of earthy complexity and still has plenty of spice.

  • 1990 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

This wine has been consistently awesome, as is most of the 1990 Jadot line up. Full throttle aromas that have still-sweet fruit with Vosne spice and brown sugar accents. Gorgeous full-bodied palate that is powerful and precise. Crushed fruit and spice for days. More hedonistic than nuanced but so darn good.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Flight 6 (2 Notes)

  • 2017 Domaine Y. Clerget Clos Vougeot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Post-tasting blind pour for the group. Youthful but drinking with a lot of pleasure already and showing more fruit sweetness and weight than you might guess for a 2017. While its primary, spice, herbal and floral notes are already present providing complexity.

  • 2018 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Bourgogne

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Blind. Rich, spice filled black cherry with 1er cru weight and concentration. Guessed this as "Obviously this is a 1er cru from a quality producer". :-)
