Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Rieussec 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Golden-orange color, excellent for a 1990; aromatic, honeysuckle, orange blossom, citrus, slight honey, slight butterscotch; palate is medium-plus bodied, sweetness is very balanced, medium-plus acidity, white stone fruits, slight citrus, fades a bit through the midpalate where just a touch of heat shows (14.5% alcohol); finish is medium length at best. Overall this is a very well balanced Rieussec, certainly lighter and more elegant than I was expecting for Rieussec in 1990 and more reminiscent of a Barsac. Complex enough especially on the nose, but the palate falls short of a great top-tier aged Rieussec with the fading through the midpalate and finish. Enjoyable now. 92
3 hours later: utterly elegant and delicious. Length is still the bit holding it back but very nice.
Retasted over 4 days and this continued to drink very well.

  • 2008 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Greenish golden; high intensity aromatics, white fruit, very slight brioche, much more citrusy and fresh; palate is medium bodied, superb mousse, dosage is perfect and not at all sweet like young Comtes typically is, lemon-lime, excellent length; finish is medium-plus length. Superb but young. 95

  • 2010 Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Medium-ruby, darker than the volnay tonight; deep aromatics with red and black fruits; palate is medium bodied, smooth and richly textured, high acidity, balanced medium alcohol; finish is medium length. Definitely richer styled burgundy but balanced with refreshing acidity. 90

  • 1978 Vietti Barolo Rocche 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Light ruby-tawny; aromatic, leafy, red fruited, floral, roses; light bodied, high acidity, balanced alcohol, elegant and lifted throughout, red fruited, some balsamic and soy; medium-plus finish. Really lovely mature Barolo, ready to drink now. 92-93
Day 2: This held up very well in a small 4oz bottle filled to the top.

  • 2011 Vieux Château Certan 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Deep ruby, youthful color; plummy, somewhat reticent aromatics; medium-full bodied, black fruits, slightly plummy, fades a bit through the mid palate, heat shows a bit; finish is medium length. This seems like it’s at an awkward age, needs time. 91
