Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2007 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

One of my contributions for the lunch. Chilled, PnP, drank over 2 hours

Prior notes:"Pale gold color. Nose showing lemon, orchard fruits, oyster shell, crushed stone. Palate showing apples, pear, lime, pineapple. Picking up some saline/salt air through the mid palate. Long and nuanced finish..."

Still showing well, a big hit with this group. Continued to evolve nicely over the time we drank it. Good amount of time left with this vintage. Perfect with the Farmstead fare...

  • 2018 Paula Kornell Blanc de Noirs

    USA, California, Napa Valley

A contribution from the vintner...:) Great start to the lunch.

Nose of apple, citrus, yeast. Delicate bubbles, orchard fruit, brioche on the palate. Medium/light body and finish

  • 2012 Dana Estates Sauvignon Blanc Hershey Vineyard 96 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Generous contribution from Tom...a wine of interest to me but do not own yet. Chilled, PnP, drank over 2 hour lunch.

From 2016 notes:"Great nose of honey and white flowers. Palate was crisp, nicely balanced acidity. Incredible mid/back palate length, complexity and creaminess. Secondary flavors started to really shine after about an hour..."

What is notable about this wine, IMO, is how the nose evolves over time. Elegant and expressive, the fruit, floral and batonnage really shines...I probably liked this more than the rest of the crew.

This is a very expensive version of Napa SB, many would argue not worth it and may be a bias against the wine in a tasting like this. That said, great showing on this day

  • 2016 Trois Noix Sauvignon Blanc

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Contribution from the vintner, my first experience with this wine. Chilled, drank over course of the lunch.

Bright straw color. Citrus and lemongrass on the nose. Bright palate of grapefruit, citrus/pineapple, lemon curd. Crisp, nice acidity, creamy finish. Really pleasant....great Summer wine

  • 1985 Château Gaudrelle Vouvray Clos le Vigneau

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Tor brought this one, he has always been generous with rare and interesting wines from his cellar. Slightly chilled, drank over 2 hours.

Light, brassy straw color. Nose is fruity/faint orchard fruit, mineral. Palate of pear, green apple, chalk. Smooth and elegant texture. Medium weight, medium/light finish.

Really interesting wine, I have less experience with the varietal so hard to compare. Nicely aged at this point and seems to have life left in it for a while. Fun to try a wine like this with age on it

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 1976 Travaglini Gattinara

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara

Generous contribution from Tor. PnP, drank alongside other reds.

Faded ruby/browned color, thinned at the rim. Nose of old cherry, damp earth. Palate of sour cherry, forest floor. Amazingly (at least to me) this continued to evolve in the glass - I thought it was gone but rallied and showed better 90 minutes in. Picked up deeper fruit, some brown sugar.

I would not have guessed this wine would have aged like this. My experience with is this wine as a solid red sauce wine...this showing demonstrated some longevity. While past its prime, still fun to drink

  • 2002 Marcassin Pinot Noir Blue-Slide Ridge Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

One of my contributions. In my cellar from 10_ years, waiting for a worth audience...:) Was unsure if this would have gone the distance with this kind of age. Slow oxed for 30 minutes, drank over 2 hours.

Medium ruby color, cloudy. Nose initially showed some medicinal/asperin and funk. After about 45 minutes it evolved to red berry, lavender and damp earth. Palate of dark red fruits, spice, mushroom and smoke. Texture is a bit sappy/dense. Full body, medium finish.

A solid showing, the group was split on this. It is still in good shape, the style may have been too heavy for some palates. Either way, still in good shape - would drink now

  • 1977 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

A contribution from Tom, what appeared to be a pristine bottle showed mild cork taint. Thought it might blow off but was till there in an hour...

Underlying fruit was still there, silky and expressive. Too bad this was a flawed bottle!

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1984 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

In my cellar for about 10 years, awaiting a worthy audience...:) PnP, drank over 2+ hours.

Medium garnet/brick color, translucent, no sediment. Nose showing red fruit, plums, herbs, graphite, eucalyptus. Smooth and elegant palate adding dark cherry, cassis, mint and mineral. Lingers through the mid palate. Tannins smoothed, medium/full body, medium finish.

Classic Heitz Matha's profile. Still going strong, based on this bottle another 10 years? The mid 80s Heitz Martha's have evolved into classic wines. I have the 84/85/86 in my cellar, I would rank this slightly behind the 85...not by much. Great showing on this day!

  • 1972 Three Palms Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Three Palms Vineyard

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga

Fantastic contribution from Greg...this one is a deep cellar pull. We were speculating that it may have been hand bottled at the time. Well preserved and stored bottle, PnP, sipped this one over about 2 hours.

Tawny/garnet color, not much separation. Nose showing dusted red fruit and earth notes. Smooth texture and elegant palate, classic old school cabernet. Old berry and mushroom notes through the mid palate. Still a lot going on, mild acidity and structure still present. Medium weight and finish

I don't have any experience with this vintage (not many do), drinking well and still has a good arc ahead of it. Great showing on this day - one of the stars of the show!
