Introduction

got an invite this month! straight into the first team after doing well off the bench. David who used to work at P and import Greek stuff was there - nice to see him again.

Just on format - it's an options game but I like to get my tasting done and make a guess before we commence.

Flight 1 (15 Notes)

  • 2019 Azienda Agricola Bricco Ernesto di Vezza Renato Vino Bianco

    Italy

    Served blind.
Almond meal, a little apple cider, smidge of butter/cream, slightly earthy underpin on the nose. in the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, ctrus, applel as well - red and green, apple skin texture and bitterness, alcohol warmth. Not for me.
I went Italian, possibly Sardinian Vermentino, Verdicchio castelli di jesi? 2-3 years old.

  • 2015 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Served blind.
Lime and lime cordial with a tiny stone fruit underpin, slight honey, slight kerosene. In the mouth it's softly acidity, a little bitter, the fruit muted and more stone fruity, slight alcohol warmth, textured grip.
Phew, the nose immediately said aged Riesling, the palate said no no no no. Totally confused. Head was stuck on Riesling tracks after nose and I couldn't get away from that.

  • 2018 Hochkirch Pinot Noir Maximus

    Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Henty

    Served blind.
Medium plus intensity aromas of black cherry, sweet spice, concentrated, slight wood glue and and other sweet fruits in support - plums and blackcurrant. in the mouth it has medium plus acidity, alcohol warmth, plenty of texture - tannic grip, black cherry and berry, plenty of alcohol warmth which is a bit of a problem for me. It's a bit shouty.
I guessed (worked) Pinot Noir, Australian, Victorian, Yarra, 3-4 years old.

  • 2012 Hochkirch Pinot Noir Maximus

    Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Henty

    Served blind.
Medium minus intensity aromas of herbaceous notes, funky, earthy, a little mushroom, slight toast, with time it shows some pretty, jubey red fruit. medium plus intensity acidity, textured burr, slight alcohol warmth is non-intrusive, that lightweight fruit again but ripe. Pretty good.
I guessed an older (10ish?) Pinot Noir from Yarra Valley.

  • 2010 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir

New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough

    Served blind.
Wood glue, sweet spice, ripe black fruit, clean, polished oak. medium plus intensity acidity, fleshy, peppery spice, dark hued fruit, alcohol warmth would be intrusive but this is served at cellar temperature so it's kept in check. A little oaky bitterness. It's a little bit too worked for me.
the nose really put me in mind of Schubert and Gladstone so I went with Martinborough Pinot, 4-6 years old.

  • 2010 By Farr Pinot Noir Sangreal

    Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong

    Served blind.
Slight volatility, black hued fruit, a little cherry, stalky notes. Medium plus intensity acidity, chalky texture is an underpin, fruit is a bit muted, quite savoury, slight alcohol warmth.
Guessed whole bunchy Australian Pinot, probably Victorian yarra or geelong by process of elimination (it ain't beechworth or mornington) and about 4-6 years old.

Candied prettiness, carbonic maceration; red berries, slight tomato leaf, meaty underpin. Medium plus intensity acidity, medium minus intensity flavours and fruit tea tannins. Hmm.
Cleanly made French either trousseau or poulsard, young - 1-2 years old.

Slight wood glue, black fruit, a little sweet spice, very slightly earthy notes. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, plentiful tight, peppery tannins grip the mouth, alcohol warmth, fruit less engaged on the palate. Meh.
guessed Australian, 5 years old, some Italian varietal...Face Plant!

  • 2012 Pierre Amadieu Gigondas Le Pas de l'Aigle

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

    Served blind.
Spiced red berries especially ripe strawberry, sweet spice, leather, garrigue. In the mouth it has loads of spice, alcohol warmth and tight, slightly chalky tannins, did I mention the alcohol, this is quite soupy as well. What a beast.
    I knew this was mine.

  • 2012 Pierre-Henri Morel Gigondas

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

    Served blind.
Spiced, savoury, a little peppery note with red and black fruit and a touch of game. In the mouth it's juicy, fleshy, savoury, chewy talc textured tannins, fruit in support, non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. balanced. Nice.
    I knew this was mine.

  • 2018 Oddero Barbera d'Alba

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba

    Served blind.
Savoury, spiced, crushed rock, slightly carbonic prettiness, berried dark fruit. In the mouth it's juicy and peppery with plenty of spice, tight, chalky tannins that are persistent and don't dominate - nicely done - berried fruit again.
The rock, carbonic, berried fruit and tannic profile put me in mind of Priorat Grenache, young - say 3-4 years.

  • 1995 Château Marquis de Terme Les Gondats

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Served blind.
Slightly smoky, wet black fruit, a little reductive rubbery note, mushroom, touch of soy. on the palate it has sour medium plus intensity acidity, medium plus intensity chalky drying gritty tannins, a little sweet plum fruit core, very tight with slight alcohol warmth on the finish.
The nose threw me on this one. I went with Italian, aged, not Nebbiolo so possibly Taurasi & at least 20 years old.

  • 2001 Yarra Yarra The Yarra Yarra

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    Served blind.
Gamey, meaty, slightly oxidised, ripe black fruit, polished oak is controlled, sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity, lots of alcohol warmth, chewy, chalky tannins, ripe, bit, black fruits, chewy, fairly monstrous.
I went with Cabernet or blend Australian, Victorian but old school and 20 years old minimum.

  • 1981 Seville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    Served blind.
Cellar stink, slightly meaty, sweet black fruit core are also present along with leather, earth that is slightly baked. Juicy, that cellar stink note is on the palate as well but so is that sweet fruit core. Chalky tannins, slight alcohol warmth.
Pushing the cellar stink to one side it put me in mind of older Cabernets I've had from Australia e.g. Mildara, Petaluma, so that's what I went with. Guessed at 30+ years old.

  • 2019 Seppelt Shiraz Arrawatta Hill Great Western Vineyard

    Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Grampians

    Served blind.
Cream, black fruits, sweet spice, slight savoury notes, blackcurrant and plum. Medium plus acidity, ripe black fruits, alcohol warmth is present but controlled, chalky tannins...over time a little peppery note starts to show.
Initially I had no idea what this was but, with time, it slid towards Victorian Shiraz of 3-4 years old...I didn't have any idea on sub-region. Again I eliminated Mornington, Beechworth, Heathcote...but that was as far as I got.

Closing

A better than normal showing on the blind front though, with EP looming, I'm deeply disturbed by the mis-reading of the Terme les Gondas...
