Introduction

It's always a great evening when we go to Spoon. The theme was WTDS, but gravitated to a nice blend of French classics to fit the current Spoon menu. Five of us gathered for the festivities (DM, SS, CS, KB/VB). The wines tonight were splendid and the food pairings hit on all cylinders too. Great night folks!

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2007 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Nicolas François 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass plus over 90 minutes. This was our first foray into the '07 CNFB. I thought this showed well with sea breezes and yeast up front, quince, rising bread dough, pear cream, briny minerality and acacia flowers. The palate comes off as well delineated, with white apple, lemon, lemon chiffon, bread, green apple and crystalline limestone. This has good complexity and plenty of lift on the both the nose and palate. I think this bodes well for the future. 94(+)pts.

  • 1990 Domaine Fabien Coche Meursault 1er Cru Gouttes d'Or 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Light medium gold color. Drank a glass plus over 2 hours. Another great bottle; filled with lemon oil, toffee, butter, pralines, beeswax, poached pear, wet stone, almond and spices. Drinking just great these have been spot on. Love it when they come through with this age.

  • 2009 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St.-Jacques 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Medium red color. Decanted for 90 minutes; drank a glass plus over 90 minutes. Just a lovely bottle of ESJ showing the vintage character. Open and filled with Gevrey spices; baking spice, spiced red currants, wafting red rose aromas, and sous bois on the nose. The palate has that touch of sauvage, tart cherry, spiced red currants, ferrous minerality, medium bodied with round tannins and a whisp of vanilla extract on the finish. 93+ to 94pts.

  • 2012 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph 92 Points

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. I had this last about 7 years ago and commented it needed 5 plus years. Well the time shows now. Roast meats on the nose, olive tapenade, dark fruits and glycerin, dried leaves, menthol and dark cherry. The palate shows tart cherry, cranberry, olive, crunchy dark raspberry, herbal and a little stemmy, with Captain crunch cereal on the finish. Good to go now.

  • 2001 Château Doisy-Védrines 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Deep gold color. PNP, drank a glass over 30 minutes, Orange cream, sweet cream, ripe peach, cardamom, spice on luscious nose. The palate is strongly spiced, apricot and orange, bold, vanilla, orange marmalade, honey, full bodied, good acid carries this nicely matured Sauternes with some bitters on the finish. Nice, and quite consistent.
