Lovely return to the private dining room at the Medlar.

On pouring - a whiff of oak on the nose, this couldn't be anything other than a chardonnay. Colour - pale straw. On the palate - so structured, so refined - linearity and cut. Wine like this could restore my faith in white burgundy. My WOTN.

On pouring this seemed to have almost the same nose as its flightmate, and a very similar colour, however on the palate it was different. Plusher, more "Meursault" for sure - less linearity but definitely acidity there, a kind of lemon, or candied lemon aspect to it. Over time and in the glass this became more integrated to my taste, and a small sip, tasted about 45 minutes later, and at room temp, was the best of all.

On the nose - i was surprised at what seemed again like obvious oak. Maybe I've just got a very oak sensitive nose at the moment? A bit of funk, which blew off, and just lovely savouriness underneath, with perhaps a hint of strawberry. Some discussion at the table as to whether this was at or past its peak, and a suggestion that the wine cut off a bit abruptly toward the end - again, i could get that, but I suspect it also suffered from being sat alongside younger and more exuberant wines. Either way, delighted to have a single bottle of this left, and this was my #2 WOTN.

This is *just* starting to get into the window. Grip, bite, that savouriness I love in Beaune reds, but also some lift and ethereality. If the 97 might be considered to stop a little short, this definitely does not. This doesn't give as much pleasure, right now, as the 97, but has a long road ahead of it and is only starting to come into its own. I have a couple of bottles left and intend to leave it at least a year or two before sampling the next.

An unusual wine, and a treat to taste it. Lovely nose - some bramble, some sous bois. Nose more inviting than the palate - crunchy acidity - cranberry perhaps? I'd love to try this again, perhaps when not surrounded by wines with less bracing acidity.

The cork fell in the bottle. This didn't dampen our enjoyment however. Surprisingly clean nose for a wine of this age - seemed to get more meaty as time went on. Savoury on the palate, but still some fruit there - almost candied fruit. A fellow diner described the taste as "small" - which I got, it felt almost like a jelly tot in the middle of the tongue, but over time it opened up somewhat. If you have some, wouldn't suggest holding onto it for much longer, but a good condition bottle will give no small pleasure.

Big on the palate. Big on the nose. *Just* a whiff of coke float, but also freshness and acidity. Someone at the table said it's like a race between the tannins and the fruit, and it will be interesting to see which one will win - my handwritten note said "Too much structure? No?".
This has some time ahead of it - more enjoyable to drink now than perhaps my note suggests, but I'd also be very keen to try this again in a few years.

Oooh - a tingle on the collarbone, this is lovely. I wrote "jewel like fruit" which I think was said by someone else first, but totally accurate. Slightly candied, and a tannic finish - doesn't *quite* deliver on the exit what it promised on the entrance but - a really lovely wine. Didn't make my top 3 but equally - I could have marked it my #1 in different circs I think.

A bit smoky, a hint of cocacola, and a hint of coke smoke (this discussion brought back some fond memories of coal fires growing up in the midlands...ahh) - clearly of its vintage, but as refined an example as you'd be likely to find. Some discussion over whether this could be a new world pinot - to my taste no, there's no hint of jamminess, but I could get the point.

There was something not quite right with this, and hard to place. Some kind of stewed, pruney character - redolent to me of heat damage. Looking back at my previous note - this is definitely an out of condition bottle. We opened the backup too - and pretty much the same story. Sad sad sad.

We are getting towards the stage of the evening when notes become more impressionistic and less analytical. This starts off with a bit of brett - perhaps just a *little* more than needed to keep things interesting, but definitely far from faulty to my taste. Some marzipan on the palate, lovely feel in the mouth, and it has a long finish. I'd be delighted if I had a few bottles of this in the cellar, and my #2 WOTN.

A generous backup shared after a couple of disappointments. On the nose - lovely, there's a kind of florality there which follows onto the palate. Some redcurrant, a delicacy to it - but still that lingering acidity that makes me think that my 08s can wait a little while longer before I bring them out of storage.

Lovely start to proceedings. Taut, linear - just a whiff of oxidation but no bruised apple. Some discussion at the table of it being somewhat "natural" - i could get that, but it certainly isn't self indulgently so. Delicious now - would be intrigued to see how it ages.
