With the Hoevers and family. First bottle if the evening. Only bottle from this vintage, no formal notes. Chilled, PnP.
Crisp, notes of citrus, lemongrass, goose berry and tangerine. Good persistence through mid palate. Chalky and smooth on the finish. Excellent SB from Spottswoode
Drank after the sparkling (Schramsberg), slight chill, PnP. Drank over the course of the evening...
From prior notes: Medium gold color. Nose showing lemon zest, apricot and vanilla. Rich and fleshy palate of creamy citrus, apricot, peaches, orange zest. Skip4Wine's Marmalade descriptor fits well...palate is layered, great secondary notes. Full body chard, long finish.//"
Still right in the zone, seems that this should go for a while. Wine continued to evolve in the glass, showing more depth on mid palate about an hour+ in, last sips were the best...Will decant next bottle if venue allows
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
First bottle of this from a batch bought at auction in 2012, in my cellar since. A blustery night, was looking for the appropriate pairing with my spiced sausage cassoulet...a good excuse to open this. Decanted and strained (some sediment) about 20 minutes prior to drinking
Dark, slightly cloudy garnet color. Some thinning at the edge. Nose showed a little funk, blowing off then showing red fruits, spice. Palate was black cherry, blue fruits, baking/Christmas spice, anise, pepper. Red fruits and spice through the mid palate. Medium weight, long finish.
Great showing, aged nicely, no edges at this point. Not picking up the heat noted by others in this bottle. 2007 vintage has its detractors, I did not try this early in its evolution so no comparison. At this point its drinking like a classic CdP...perfect pairing with the cassoulet. In a good zone, if one has multiple bottles its worth opening now. WOTN for the group.
Last bottle of this designate from this vintage. This followed an 07 Vieux Donjon at dinner. Splash decant, drank over 45 minutes
Notes from 2020: "Inky purple color, no separation yet. Nose of dark berries, minerals, dried flowers. Full body, viscous palate showing blackberry, blue fruits, charcoal, faint oak. Rich flavors through the mid and back palate, long finish."
Blackberry and currants still vibrant. Vibrant color, no separationIf tasted blind I would have guessed this was younger. Outstanding showing on this evening. Seems this will go for another 10+ years. Consistent with the 08s in my cellar, an unheralded vintage that has turned out to be superb
2019 Schramsberg Vineyards Blanc de Blancs 88 Points
USA, California, North Coast
A great start to the evening, a go-to casual sparkling wine for us. Slight chill, drank over 30 minutes
Consistent with Blan de Blanc style. Fined bubbles. Plate was crisp, orchard fruits, almond, brioche.
