Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 1983 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 96 Points

    France, Champagne

From magnum. This was spectacular. Surprisingly fresh on the nose with toast, lemon, brioche, yeast, grapefruit, and a bit of honey. Perfectly balanced with nice acidity and lovely mousse on the palate. Long finish.

  • 1983 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Fragrant nose with a strong matchstick component at first that blew off a bit with air. Citrus, spices, and flint on the nose. Good balance with lemon, hay, and riper yellow fruit on the palate. Nice finish. Very interesting wine, especially with some air.

  • 1983 Remoissenet Père et Fils Le Montrachet 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Lovely, rich nose with floral notes, some tertiary flavors, and citrus. Quite a bit of acidity with more lemon notes, herbs, honey, peach, and minerals on the palate. Long finish. Very lovely wine that strikes a wonderful balance between mature notes and freshness. A great experience!

  • 1983 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

From Jeroboam. What a privilege being able to taste this wine. Great nose with good depth that's more subtle that I would have expected, but it really woke up with some air. Lemon, honey, and mineral notes dominate. Great acidity on the palate with more minerals and rich fruit along with lemon, and a slight peach/apricot note. Long finish. What a lovely wine, although it maybe didn't quite have the complexity I expected. Difficult to put the label bias aside, but I think I preferred the Remoissenet by a hair...

  • 1983 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

From 6L. Very pretty nose with underwood, cassis, tart fruit, cherries, cedar, and a tobacco note. Good balance with more forest floor, red fruit, and dark cherries on the palate. Long finish. This was one of my favorite reds and it kept improving with air throughout the night.

  • 1983 Château Lafite Rothschild 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

From 3L. This wasn't showing much and felt backwards throughout the night with some fruit and leather flavors on the nose. A bit thin and not that interesting on the palate. Medium finish. By far the least impressive Bordeaux tonight.

  • 1983 Château Latour Grand Vin 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

From 6L. Lovely, elegant if not understated nose with red cherries, violets, and forest notes. Nice acidity with more subtle flavors of underwood, dark cherries, and moss. Great finish. I really liked this, probably the least powerful wine, but it made up in elegance and nuance.

  • 1983 Château Mouton Rothschild 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

From 3L. Classic Bordeaux nose with some cassis, forest, notes, leather, spices, and black cherries. The palate had quite a bit of acidity with tart fruit and forest notes. Good finish. Very nice wine, but didn't really stand out.

  • 1983 Château Haut-Brion 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From 3L. Beautiful nose with an herbal character, cassis, smoke, tobacco, and pure fruit flavors. There is nice depth and overall it felt quite young. Good acidity on the palate with underwood, some tertiary flavors, cherries, and a savory note. Long finish. This was drinking perfectly and felt fully mature, although not in risk of declining anytime soon. Wow!

  • 1983 Château La Mission Haut-Brion 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From 3L. Pretty nose with dark fruit, leather, forest, and lots of black and red fruit. Nice balance on the palate with more (surprisingly primary) fruit flavors, tobacco, and forest floor. Long finish. This was very lovely and one of my favorites. Next to the Haut Brion it felt a bit more tamer.

  • 1983 Château Margaux

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From 5L. Probably not a good bottle, this felt musty but not corked.
