What an amazing opportunity! A complete look at Clos de la Marechale Rouge from 2004 through 2019 with couple ancient Faiveley renditions and a couple Marechale Blancs thrown in. This is primed to be an incredible retrospective.
A challenging flight because it was hard to get a real feel for the terroir of the vineyard. With time or poorer years there tends to be a strong iron note, more challenging years tend to lack some depth or may present some off characteristics, the best years show nice depth and structure but they never seem to be consistent in character, so it is hard to feel strongly about this wine that is usually so promising young. I am a huge fan of Freddy Mugnier and everything he does, so I am a little saddened by the lack of declarative presence these wines tend to show and fall back on the vineyards lack of slope and historical relevance. While the 2010 and 1985 were fantastic, I look to the challenging years to show some sort of common thread that unfortunately was not there.
2004 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Duller red with rusty rim; beef broth nose with powerful green and iron notes, lots of clay, sanguine, dried roses, getting greener with air initially but something suggests this may improve with extended aeration.

2005 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Deep ruby with denser core; fresh and powerful dusty nose, violets and wood tannin, almost corky, something very pure and substantial in there too, nice spice, tasty but this needs extended air to showcase its stuff.

2006 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Prettier color with maroon rim; iron evident on the nose, perfumed floral notes, plum, dark cherry, a nice elegance to the nose, in a good place but not hitting the heights of what you kind of want or expect, meaty cherry, very pleasant but lacks some oomph on the back end.

2007 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Cloudier crimson color; almost Grenache-like on the nose, leather, Brett, medicinal plum, funky and different than others in the flight while providing a softer structure and intensity.
