Such a treat to sit with Jon and go through these wines. What a treat
2020 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Cuvée Classique Ampodium
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Jubey, pretty blue and blackberry fruits, carbonic maceration, sweet ad savoury notes; a little apricot but also a struck match bacon fat element. Juicy, blue and black fruits a little alcoholic warmth underpins the softly textured but drying grip. The carbonic notes are here as well. Very long balanced. Nice with a tiny touch of bitterness.

2020 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie La Madinière

Oak more prevalent here; caramel; sweet spice, blackberry with a little blackcurrant note, rich, ripe and powerful but without being over done, slight cedar, oak starts to blow off with time and agitation. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, wild blackberry and blackcurrant, silky drying tannins persists long, balanced, time,

Again the oak is present and offers a little plain chocolate & caramel, baking spices, biscuit, spiced blackberry with time a tendency to show a touch of wood glue. Oak is to the fore on the palate. Juicy, concentrated dense, textured grip is slightly drying, Savoury dark fruits vie for attention on the palate, it's a little bit overblown for me, alcohol a little too high

Blue and blackberry, a little bacon fat, savoury, slightly pepper, meaty, gamey notes, very slight whole bunch and volatility with time. Juicy, talc textured tannins are persistent, wild blackberry fruit, slightly meaty notes, less Volatile on the palate but a bit of a warning. Hmm

Slight volatility, bacon fat, touch of sulphur prickle. Juicy carbonic maceration, wild blackberry a little peppery spice from the alcohol, Medium pulls intensity acidity, tightly textured chewy tannins are drying, wild blackberry fruit, slightly blocky almost. Hmm

2020 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Maison Bleue

Ripe blackberry, smells quite dense, touch of smoked bacon, meaty underpin, polished oak is well integrate but present and offers a little caramel and vanilla. Big, bold, ripe and concentrated on the palate, savoury blackberry, tight woody chewy grippy tannins, Quite a brooding and powerful profile. Woof.

Super floral and perfumed; touches of violet, rose petal, candy floss from (presumed) carbonic maceration, touches of pink peppercorn, blackberries, smidge of sweet spice, vanillin oak. Medium plus intensity acidity, chewy tight tannins are quite silky textured, long, powerful, needs time to settle. On the large side.

2020 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Strawberry notes have a slight compote quality, sweet spice, touch of raspberry, clean and fruit forward but, with time, a touch of garrigue. Juicy, textured woody grip is chalky textured, alcohol warmth, ripe red berry, touches of sweet spice, that garrigue note translates to the palate, slightly bitter on the finish but okay to nice.

2020 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Slightly jammy and baked red berry fruit, alcohol prickles lends a touch of pepperiness, slight struck match/bacon fat, biscuit. Gets more jubey with air and time. Alcohol over acid makes the mouth water, baked red berries, cream, sweet spice, fairly blocky tannins but relatively silky textured with a little rasping quality. Hmm.

2020 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dense and savoury, red (especially raspberry) and slight blackberry fruits, sweet spice, floral notes as well as a savoury meaty underpin and a touch of alcohol induced peppery prickle. Of the three CndP's this feels the freshest on the palate, plenty of textured grip, fruit is generous, present and persistent. Alcohol warmth intrudes on the finish. Nice
