Another year, another Pinotpalooza and another opportunity to see what is happening in Australian Pinot Noir
Interesting how the quality level and cost of the Pinot's had changed this year. Stylistically it felt like there was quite a lot of not very good fruit being asked to do a lot of hard work. Where the wine makers were less aspirational/interventional the wines seemed to work

2020 Matahiwi Estate Pinot Noir Holly
New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa
Concentrated, big and puts me in mind of the bullishness that I associate with Central Otago. Black fruits, sweet spice, slight wild ferment. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, dense and slightly woody tannins, black fruit doesn't quite carry beneath this. Time should help.

Earth, savoury, dense and smoky black fruits shows berries and plums. Sweet spice. Concentrated on the palate, dense, wood and grape tannins black fruits, very long, okay.

medium minus intensity aromas are meaty with wild ferment, blue and black fruits, baking spice. On the palate it has touch chewy tannins drying but silky textured. Not much fruit here. Time? It's already 4 years old. Meh

Spicy with almost a touch of alcohol prickle, very very slight wood glue notes, jubey red and black fruits. In the mouth it's sourly juicy with drying textured burr, fruit very much in the back seat. Nah.

Very slight Bretty farmyard notes, savoury, meaty, gamey, brambly fruit. Like the other Rippon Pinot's it's both sour and hard with foursquare grip, bitter, fruit still playing second fiddle. Meh
