Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2016 Domaine Vincey Champagne Grand Cru Oger 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

The nose is fresh, fragrant, and citrus-driven with tones of green apples, peaches, pears, tropical citrus, green tea, chamomile, fresh shaved ginger, biscuits, baking spices, clove spices, and toast notes. This shows off good depth with it presenting a different take to Chardonnay. The Medium bodied feel is well balanced and fresh with racy, high acidity. This is my first time with Domaine Vincey and I'm really digging it. I look forward to trying more and seeing how they develop over the coming years.

  • NV Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Cuvée No. 741 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Right away, I'm enjoying this much more than I did 15ish months ago. This was likely lost in a sea of similar wines then. Instead this bottle really stands tall on its own as it shows off complex and deep tones of toast, brioche, red apples, crisco, spiced pears, mint, herbs, kumquat, nutty notes, and some meyer lemon notes. The Medium bodied feel is well balanced and long with crisp, acidity that still has a little bite. This was a real beautiful Jacquesson. It was expressive and much more in line with what I would expect from these wines. There is certainly life ahead of it as the acidity could still use a bit more time to calm down and settle in, but the tones are really there and this is a truly enjoyable experience now.

  • 2014 Georges Laval Champagne Premier Cru Les Hautes Chevres 95 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

This has really developed beautifully in the last few years as it has really taken on an expressive side that is stopping me in my tracks. There is so much depth and poise with flowing tones of gun flint, pears, apples, red berries, nectarines, raspberries, red florwers, yellow flowers, vanilla beans, herbs, and warm dough notes. The Medium bodied feel shows off the depth and balance of the nose with sharp, high acidity. The acidity does have some cut, but it isn't too overpowering and really shows off a mouthwatering quality. When I had this in 2019, I could see the possibilities of where this could head. 3 1/2 years later, those possibilities are revealing themselves and I'm deeply enjoying where it has gone so far. I wish I had some bottles on hand to follow even further, but this is a wonderful and unique expression of Meunier that I deeply enjoy.

  • 2006 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Rare 94 Points

    France, Champagne

It is always a treat to have a Piper Rare and this is no different. There is so much depth and class to the nose with loads of toast, brioche, baked apples, pears, quince, honeydew, biscuits, lemon curd, and custard. The Medium bodied feel has a lot of texture, depth, and richness while still playing a deft hand. The tart, high acidity is mouthwatering and in great balance. This was a real joy to drink as it showed off a lot of expression, balance, and texture.

  • 2020 Domaine Nathalie et Gilles Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

The nose is expressive and crystalline with fresh tones of ginger, sweet lemon peels, gun flint, pears, saline, apples, and white peaches. The Medium bodied feel is poised and shows off the expressiveness of the nose along with racy, high acidity. This is a lovely, young Chablis that does a great job showing well at this young stage while still having plenty of room to develop in the coming years.

  • 2007 Gosset Champagne Célebris 90 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose was a bit muted and foursquare with toasty notes, pears, quince, red apples, brioche, stone fruits, yellow flowers, baking spices, and some vanilla bean. The Medium bodied feel is balanced but also wound up a little tight ala the nose along with crisp, high acidity. This feels in a bit of a dumb phase or just also lost in a sea of great wine open. Either way, I hope I get another chance with this at a point in the future as it feels like there is something really good here that just didn't want to come out.

  • 2016 Domaine Vigot Fabrice Vosne-Romanée Les Damaudes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

The nose is understated, yet perfumed with pretty tones of raspberries, fresh herbs, earth notes, red fruits, violets, crushed rocks, sweet tobacco, and a touch of leather. There is good depth here with there being a more high-toned quality to the notes. The Medium bodied feel is deft and elegant with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. This is a real sexy, young Vosne that is open enough on the primary side but it will really benefit from more time to really turn on the aromatics and feel.

  • 2019 Domaine Billaud-Simon Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

The nose is fragrant and polished with classic tones of gun flint, apples, peaches, white fruits, jasmine, toast, baking spices, limes, lemon peels, and saline notes. There is excellent depth and style here that shows off the class of the wine. The Medium bodied feel is balance and deft with crisp, medium+ acidity that leans into a lengthy finish. This is really lovely now and there is plenty of room for growth over the next 3-5+ years.

  • 2016 Ultramarine Blanc de Noirs Heintz Vineyard Sonoma Coast 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

The nose is classic Ultramarine as it leans hard into the estery quality that I get from Ultramarine along with strawberries, red berries, biscuits, tropical citrus, papaya, cinnamon spices, and peaches. The Medium bodied feel is fresh and lively with racy, high acidity. This is still very primary and the acidity still has some sharpness to it. I feel like this still needs a few years of aging to fully round into form.
