Flight 1 - Whites (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Boekenhoutskloof Sémillon 88 Points

South Africa, Coastal Region, Franschhoek Valley

Light amber color. The nose is totally dominated by oak, vanilla and smoke, but has notes of glue stick and boiled pears peeking out from underneath. The taste is equally dominated by oak that really tears and dries the mouth. Great intensity and some nice notes of maturity on the midpalate. Still needs time to lets off the oak.

  • 2005 Château Latour-Martillac Blanc 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Straw yellow color. Restrained nose with notes of wine gum and gooseberry, gains some intensity with air. Great acidity makes the mouth feel very refreshing and lively. Sharp, fine yellow fruit, plums, peaches and gooseberry. Nice balance.

Flight 2 - Is this left bank? (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Château Pavie 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Very dark red color. Very potent nose with ripe blackcurrant, tobacco, pencil shavings, some oak and a bit of volatile acidity. Similarly virile and modern taste, black fruit, primarily blackcurrant. On the midpalate the fruit expands to notes of dark chocolate, tobacco and pencil shavings. Long finish with extremely powerful tannins and acidity, however well integrated. Very intense and powerful wine, clearly made in a very modern style for Bordeaux. This wine need serious time, but could very well turn out superb.

  • 2002 Stonyridge Vineyard Larose 90 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Waiheke Island

Dark red color. The rustic nose has blackcurrant, cherries, an herbaceous note and some oak. On the palate there is a green, vegetable presence of blackcurrant bush, tobacco leafs, medicine and a bit of cedar wood. But I believe there is an underlying intensity in the, at the moment, not so present fruit. Seems like classic Bordeaux of a good, but not great, vintage.

Flight 3 - Getting started (2 Notes)

  • 1995 Château Malescot St. Exupéry 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Dark red color with a brick red hue. A bit of manure and compost first on the nose but gaining more notes of tobacco, cedar wood and some blackcurrant leaf. On the palate still some refined blackcurrant, delicious midpalate with notes of cedar wood, roses and some medicine. Fine length and nice acidity makes this a well balanced and nicely drinking wine.

  • 1995 Château Pradeaux Bandol

    France, Provence, Bandol

I'm not entirely sure if this bottle was off. Its color was a browning red. The nose seems oxidized with prunes and brown sugar. The taste has strong tannins and aicidity, but again the fruit seems oxidized. After a couple of hours it seemed like it might turn around for the better, however it never managed to convice that it was suppose to be this way.

Flight 4 - Two mature fifth crus (2 Notes)

  • 1985 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Clear red color with a browning hue. Very classic Bordeaux nose with tomato plant, basement, bushes and cedar wood. Still some blackcurrant and cherry fruit on the palate, but the tobacco and cedar wood starts to dominate on the midpalate. Finally a bit of prune and graphite on the finish. Maybe a bit too light, but drinking very nicely.

  • 1983 Château Lynch-Bages 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark red center with a browning rim. Needed some air to open up on the nose with notes of blackcurrant and prunes. Good intensity on the palate with powerful blackcurrant, very rustic, with lots of iron and graphite on the midpalate and prunes on the finish. Still needs time to come around but shows nicely.

  • 1966 Château Cos d'Estournel 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Clear red color with a brown hue. Nail polish, milk product and a bit of cherry on the nose. On the palate it is a bit weak bodied and dry. Some cherry and iron notes are nicely there, but it turned a bit sour and vinegar.
