Dinner with pjaines

pjaines invited me down to his house for a wonderful Sunday dinner of foie gras and truffled rabbit. Considering our last meeting, a restrained night although we cleared 4 bottles with a little help of Mrs Jaines.

• 1990 Prince Poniatowski Vouvray Aigle Blanc

  France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

  Pears and honey. Great balance and considering we drank at the start of the evening refreshing and moorish. Went well with the foie gras. Good finish.

  My memory isn't as good as Pjaines but this wine definitely took time to come round. Muddy to start with a little heat but cleared up to reveal a pleasant nose and good body - shame the bottle was empty just as this started to sing.

• 1997 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 93 Points

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

  This had a little funky nose after decanting but it faded. Quiet a reserved wine, giving little but giving on drinking. Some dry earth, a little smoke/tobacco. Palate had a fresh balance to it and still has the backbone/structure for a longer life.

  Felt this had quiet intensity, everything had sunk down into brooding punch. Just drinking now but time is on its side. Some chocolate, cherry, liquorice. A brooding lushness on the finish.

A wonderful evening of food, wine and company and a great break from the usual round of business dinners. Hope I can return the favour, although HK's along way to come!
