A BYO event organised under Makansutra with KF Seetoh making an appearance. Mainly HK cantonese cuisine with variations on a few wedding dinner items. Food is good but pairing for the night was a little off given we had all brought different bottles without any coordination.
All wines except the Cuvee Riche tasted blind with interesting spread of varietals.
The aussies were the winners for the night given a pretty strong lineup of big names.
2006 Henschke Riesling Julius 83 Points
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
Really strong pertoleum aromas with underlying white stonefruits and a dollop of crushed shiny oyster shells. Limey chalky with white chrysanthamum flowers finishing with clean minerality and just a drop of honeysuckle.

Quite fine beads. Spritzy nose of fresh cut flowers. Mainly as serious strawberry cooler. Lively happy juice.

2007 Robert Mondavi Winery Pinot Noir 78 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley
Looked lightish translucent red like a pinot or merlot. Smelled of sweet flower petals. Pretty sweet ripe cherries and strawberryish notes. Simpla and quaffable. I had guessed a new world tempranillo and some guessed a new world grenache. However, this suprised everyone when it turned out to be a pinot! Very non typical of a pinot but really drinkable.

1999 Château les Pins Côtes du Roussillon Villages 80 Points
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages
Fermented beans sauce and dark soy sauce dotted by just the slightest trace of truffles. Also got some sichuan salted vegetables peppered with milo powder. Very lifted nose. Simpler on the palate though with aged plummish notes.

Minty eucalyptus nose. Lifted lovely and lively cherry juice on a bed of smooth chocolatey goodness ending with some licourice and spice heat. Rounded.

1998 Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz Langi 84 Points
Australia, Victoria
Tasted blind but I could swear there was a koala bear in there that had just eaten a whole eucalyptus tree. Lovely tannins and good length of fruit. As good as I last remembered having it, which was about a month ago.

2002 Clarendon Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Clarendon 84 Points
Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
This is Marlboro Extra Strong Menthol Lights. Big minty eucalpytus lifted nose of fresh green bell peppers, cabbages, green peas and tomatoes. This is probably the greenest veggie nose I ever smelt. On the palate, focused slightly vegetable sweet green peppers and ambrosia. The leafyness of the wine does overwhelm but I reward it for its sheer focused determination on the menthol vegginess. Not a wine that is easily liked.

2001 Tormaresca Castel del Monte Bocca Di Lupo 80 Points
Italy, Puglia, Castel del Monte
Lipstick rouge and indian scents with roasted walnuts. Extremely young with turpentine overwhelming dark cherries and dark wood. There is an underlying confectionary blackberry sweetness. A full bodied wine.

1999 Finca Villacreces Ribera del Duero Crianza 79 Points
Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Looks dark for its age. Brooding dark fruit aromas soaked in soy. Extremely youthful for its age with primary dark berry fruit still dominating. Extracted style. Mouth coating tannins. Feels ageable but not an easily likeable wine and is for the moment still kinda a hard wine to drink. Somehow this bottle was not as ready as the first two bottles I have had. Weird.
