Introduction

Overview of French Wine Region - part two - with accompanying wines

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2007 Cave de Lugny Mâcon-Villages 82 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Villages

Nose: pear, pineapple chunks, pencil eraser
Mouth: acid, pineapple, citrus, shortish finish.
13% £6.99. Okay but forgettable, no oak but some time on lees - the short finish means that this would probably go with any food you wanted it to.

  • 2006 Alain Geoffroy Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Nose: Floral, honey, smoke perhaps, lime and tropical fruit with some minerality
Mouth: mineral, toast, smooth citric fruit - lemon and lime, nice acidity with a long finish that left buttery overtones in the mouth.
£17.99 13%. Enough acidity here for two or three years age.

  • 2001 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Bourgogne Blanc 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Nose: Strawberry, marzipan, toasted nuts and pineapple, some caramel, rubber
Mouth: dry, nutty, light citrus and a little gooseberry. Still a little acidity and oily. Almost, for me, a touch of rancio.
£25 12.5%. Some people at the tasting liked it but it wasn't for me.

  • 2008 Château Ollieux Romanis Corbières Blanc 90 Points

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières

Nose: Rose, lychee, perfumed with spice - cinnamon in particular and mineral. The nose is almost Gewurztraminer lite!
Mouth: honey, spice, nicely integrated acidity. rich and oily butteriness and a reasonable finish.
£10 12.5%. 50% Marsanne, 50% Roussanne - Glorious homage to southern rhone. A lovely relatively cheap wine.

  • 2007 Vignerons de Buxy Bourgogne La Buxynoise 84 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Nose: Red cherry, raspberry, bonfire, earth - all of which were muted. Quite shy on the nose.
Mouth: Acidic, hardly any tannin, rich fruitiness
£9 13%. Nice but forgettable. If I ordered this at a restaurant I wouldn't be disappointed (except by the inevitable 200% mark up)

  • 2005 Domaine Gaston et Pierre Ravaut Ladoix 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Ladoix

Nose: earth, cherry pop ice lolly, rich and vibrant
Mouth: fruit, tannin, rich, decadent. Little sour astringency on the medium finish
£20 13%. Hmm,in two minds on this one. Not sure. I think the lack of finish probably pushes this one away for me.

  • 2005 Domaine Berthoumieu Madiran 88 Points

    France, Southwest France, Madiran

Nose: dark, bitter black cherry, rubber tyres burning in a field,
Mouth: licorice and tannin, black fruit gums, coffee
£9 13.5% Kind of weirdly lovely. Massive amounts of tannin and dry as the Sahara, but all the same terribly good fun.
