Knightsbridge, Northbrook IL
Tasted Sunday, October 18, 2009 by KeithAkers with 951 views

Introduction

Knightsbridge opened all of these up on a sunday for a relaxed walk around tasting. There was a good variety of younger vintages for tasting, which also gave the chance to taste some more wines from two maligned vintages in 03 and 04

*note, these notes aren't put in exact order, but instead by ascending vintage in each category

Flight 1 - Whites (9 Notes)

  • 2003 Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain Domaine Gagey 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

nose: nice nose of lemons, pears, green apples and some bits of almonds. A lighter nose that is lacking some depth and the tones are fairly forward

taste: Very good medium feel with balanced tones of pears, lemons and some almonds. Lacking acidity which makes it a bit hollow on the mid palate

overall: This is a very good puligny montrachet, but is far from anything to really get excited for. It is forward and lacking depth, so there isn't much point in continuing holding it

  • 2004 Château de la Maltroye Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Château de la Maltroye 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

nose: a real good mineral base goes along with well balanced tones of white fruits, pears, and bits of peach blossoms. A bit tight right now and not giving its all just now

taste: excellent medium feel with medium acidity and well balanced tones of white fruits, minerals, peach blossoms, and fat citrus tones

overall: Seemed to be hiding a bit and not as forthcoming as it may be in another two years. There is a real good mineral base to this and it has a real fresh feel to it that would be great with a bit more fat on it

  • 2004 Domaine des Lambrays Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Cailleret 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

nose: light and very aromatic nose with excellent tones of pears, white florals, minerals, and fresh tones of orchard fruits. Really good depth and has a real good expression to it already

taste: silky medium feel with good medium acidity and tasty tones of pears, white florals, orchard fruits, and some bits of crushed rocks. Real good and round Mid-Palate that is developing well

overall: This feels like its starting to round into form. Not sure how long of an ager it is as the acidity itsn't extremely harsh at this time. On the young side of its window, it should really come into form in another 4-7 years

  • 2004 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

nose: very pretty and expressive nose with round and balanced tones of lemon curd, meyer lemons, white fruits, and a touch of pears. Great depth and purity on this young nose

taste: well balanced and deep medium feel with medium+ acidity gives a backdrop for the excellent and pure tones of meyer lemons, white fruits, pears, with a real nice mineral undercurrent

overall: starting to drink, but could definitely use another 2-3 years to really get in its groove. Great balance and there is a real beauty waiting to emerge with some time

  • 2005 Jean-Philippe Fichet Meursault Les Chevalières 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

nose: excellent nose with good depth and well balanced tones of white peaches, pears, green apples, bits of roasted nuts, and some oily tones. Very well balanced and having a lighter style to it, though there is good fatness on the nose

taste: great medium body with medium+ acidity and fat tones of white fruits, white peaches, pears, and roasted nuts. Really good depth and very youthful on the palate with a real long finish

overall: extremely young right now, but has great material to develop into something really good. There is real good mid palate fat right now and would be great with a fatty fish

  • 2005 Vincent Dancer Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

nose: Good robust nose of hazelnuts, tart citrus tones, smoke, some buttered bread, green apples, and hot oils. Nose is a bit tight, but its well defined already

taste: excellent medium/full feel with really good medium+ acidity and tones of oranges, buttered toast, some smoke, and a good amount of hazelnuts

overall: This is really good already. The acidity catches up real fast on the backend. Has some good fat that it needs to shed, but should really get better with a few more years

  • 2005 Vincent Dancer Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

nose: youthful nose with really good tones of lemons, peaches, tree fruits, and hints of nuts and oils. Good depth and showing itself fairly well this young, though it is a little tight right now

taste: Great medium feel with medium+ acidity and well balanced tones of peaches, tree fruits, nuts, and some bits of green apples. Doesn't seem like its fully revealing itself right now, but what is showing is extremely good

overall: There is a real good crispness to it right now in its youth. The frame is there for this to really improve and really become something that would be great to have around

  • 2005 Maison Champy Corton-Charlemagne 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

nose: rather tight on the nose with real good tones of oils, fresh citrus', oranges, lemons, and hints of stones. There is good depth here, but its real hard to get a read on the nose right now

taste: very young with medium/high acidity and excellent tones of oils, fresh citrus', lemons, and stones. The acidity shreds the mid palate right now and is a bit unforgiving

overall: this needs a very long decant, or more years sideways. Its hard to get a read on this as its so young

  • 2006 Benoit Ente Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Nose: tight with taught tones of crushed stones, lemons, minerals, tree fruits, and bits of tropical citrus. Good depth, but very young right now '

taste: medium/high acidity with a really good and smooth feel, but the tones of crushed stones, lemons, minerals, and bits of tropical citrus aren't fully showing themselves right now

overall: Extremely young and in need of some aging. The acidity is a bit much, and while the feel is good, it needs to add some weight and round out a bit

Flight 2 - Village Wines (7 Notes)

  • 2004 Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes - Coeur de Roy 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

nose: robust nose of dark red cherries, spice, dark red fruits, and tart tones of raspberries. Has a higher toned quality to it

taste: very good depth with medium+ acidity that is making up most of the mid palate right now with tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, and bits of spice. Has a nice lighter feel to it, but is also very young right now

overall: A very young wine right now. Has an attractive quality to it, and didn't really come off as having the 04 green problems, though it certainly does express the lighter and higher toned style of the vintage.

  • 2004 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis Vieilles Vignes 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

nose: nice light and airy nose with pretty tones of spices, sour cherries, and some high-toned dark red fruits. Is lacking a bit in depth, but isn't showing any of the green on the nose

taste: very pretty and light feel with medium acidity and tones of spices, hi-toned red fruits, and bits of violets

overall: Could use a couple more years to fully round out and add some depth that would really make this wine better. A very pretty and fragrant wine right now

  • 2004 Gros Frère et Sœur Vosne-Romanée 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

nose: nice light and hi-toned nose with fragrant tones of spices, red fruits, red florals and some hints of green stems lying underneath a bit

taste: excellent medium/light feel with good tones of spices, red fruits, and some green stems that bite up on the backend

overall: could use a couple more years, but is accessible right now. Is a perfect everyday burg or food burg right now

  • 2004 Domaine Robert Groffier Gevrey-Chambertin 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

nose: nice hi-toned nose with good tones of red fruits, spices, and berry tones. Nice balance on it and is pretty well open right now

taste: pretty medium feel with very good tones of red cherries, red fruits, and spice tones. Nice medium acidity supports this

overall: a very good villages. This is perfectly ready to drink right now and is beging for food right now

  • 2005 Jean-Claude Boisset Gevrey-Chambertin 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

nose: nice and tight nose of red fruits, spices, and dark red cherries. Good depth for a village wine and is pretty tight right now as would be expected

taste: Very good depth with medium/high acidity and firm tannins that really show off the youth of the wine. Excellent and robust feel with well balanced tones of dark spices, dark berries and dark cherry tones

overall: an excellent village burg, this should develop nicely and get better in a few years. It needs time and has a good core right now

  • 2005 Jean-Claude Boisset Chambolle-Musigny 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

nose: quite tight right now, but what does come through is very pretty and demure with round tones of red florals, spices, and red cherries all balance out well together

taste: high acidity and chewy tannins show off the extreme youth of the wine with well balanced tones of red florals, red cherries, red fruits and a touch of spices

overall: a very nice young village chambolle. This needs some time to fully come out of its cocoon, but should really provide a lot of joy as there is some real nuance that needs to come out and let the feminine character of the wine shine through

  • 2006 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

nose: tight nose that isn't giving up too much, but there are some real nice tones of earth, mushrooms, spice and tart tones of red fruits

taste: good tannins and medium/high acidity shuts this down a bit on the palate with good tones of earth, red fruits, and bits of mushrooms. There is some good underlying material, but its a bit rough right now on the palate

overall: a quality young village burg that can really blossom with some mid term aging. Classic volnay with a real class and style to it

Flight 3 - Premier Crus (13 Notes)

  • 2002 Maison Champy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

nose: very pretty and showing off the pretty vosne character with round and elegant tones of violets, spices, red fruits, and some fresh berries. Good depth, but a bit tight right now

taste: elegant and silky feel with good medium+ acidity and some good tannins show off the youth of the wine with pretty tones of violets, red florals, spice tones, red cherries and bits of berry tones

overall: needs a couple more years, but seems like its starting to get ready. The aromatics were fairly open, but the acidity was showing off the youth of the wine right now. Its a very pretty wine that should really improve with another 3-5 years sideways

  • 2003 Domaine Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Fontenys 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

nose: very powerful nose with dense tones of brown spices, red cherries, raspberries and red currants. A bit too much power at this point as it needs to calm down a bit

taste: rich tannins show off its youth and makes a bit of a wall for the robust tones of brown spices, red cherries, raspberries and currants

overall: this is extremely young right now. The tannins are big and are begging for the wine to be aged for a good while before opening next. There is good promise on this, but its just brutally young right now

  • 2003 Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

nose: very masculine and robust nose filled with dark spices, black cherries, sour berries, and some raspberries.Real rich and powerful with really good depth

taste: big and powerful feel with rich tannins along with brawny tones of earth, dark spices, black cherries, and sour berries. Good depth, but extremely youthful right now on the palate.

overall:Its put together well, but needs to smooth out with some time. Big and brawny, this won't ever be a typical NSG, but shows off a amped up and powerful NSG LSG that could be a real stunner if it rounds into form

  • 2003 Maison Champy Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

nose: tart nose of dark red fruits, red currants, earth and brown spices. Good depth and it isn't too forward or awkward as some 03s can be

taste: big tannins with a rich medium feel and medium acidity. Robust tones of red fruits, earth, brown spices and dark red cherries work together and have an amped up feel to them. Fairly chewy right now showing off its youth

overall: this could be a really good wine if it can shed some of its baby fat and smooth out the rough edges. Could probably use another 5-7 years to smooth it out, but it does have good promise

  • 2003 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

nose: rich and dark red fruited nose with spices, dark florals, dark red cherries, red currants and bits of earth. Good depth, but the nose is a bit tight right now

taste: very young with firm tannins and rich tones of earth, red currants, dark red cherries, and bits of spices

overall: There is a good underlying richness to this. It won't ever be a volnay of finesse, but it should round into form and be a interesting wine in about 5 years

  • 2004 Domaine Francois Lamarche Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

nose: nice fragrant nose with soft tones of cherries and florals along with hints of green stemmy tones lurking unerneath. Doesn't have a lot of depth on it right now

taste: soft and easy on the palate with medium acidity and nice tones of cherries, red fruits, bits of florals, and some green tones on the back end

overall: doesn't seem like aging would help this all too much. It may round out the wine or give it a bit more depth, but the green is there in it and the acidity is coming off as in check right now

  • 2004 David Duband Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

nose: nice hi-toned nose with airy tones of red fruits, red florals, spices, and bits of chalky tones. Nice depth and pretty, but comes off as lacking a bit of definition

taste: light feel with nice hi-toned flavors of red fruits, red florals, and bits of spice and cherries. Good medium acidity gives this a nice spine

overall: Seems like its almost ready. It could probably benefit of another year or two before really getting into it. Will hopefully put on a slight bit more weight and show a very pretty wine

  • 2004 Maison Champy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

nose: nice light nose of spies, red fruits, florals and a bit of stemmy tones. Fairly fragrant and well balanced but lacking a bit of depth

taste: lighter feel with nice medium acidity and tones red fruits, spices, and bits of green stem tones. The green notes just kick up right on the back end and sneakily make their presence known

overall: a nice and easy drinking 04. Hard to say whether the green will integrate, if it does and some depth is added, this will improve substantially, if it doesn't, then it'll be a nice food burg for the mid-term

  • 2004 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

nose: very pretty and delicate nose with round tones of red florals, bits of spices and red berry tones

taste: well balanced and and tasty lighter feel with good tones of red florals, spices, bits of red cherries and red fruits. There is also a bit of green that sneaks in on the back end. Good medium+ acidity right now that is showing fairly well for its youth

overall: The green snuck in a bit on this one, but it comes off as if it can integrate. A nice and pretty wine that has a very tender feel to it. On the whole it shows off the nice side of 04 where they can be pretty and very feminine. If the green integrates on the palate and a bit more depth develop, this can be a real good wine to have in the cellar, but it isn't a long distance runner

  • 2005 Serafin Père et Fils Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

nose: pretty tight nose right now with pretty tones of perfumes, red cherries, red florals, and some hints of fresh picked berries. Has a real nice nuanced quality to it that needs some time to let it fully emerge

taste: delicate and young on the palate with medium/high acidity and pretty tones of red florals, red cherries, and hints of fresh berries. The acidity and tannins prevent this from really singing right now at this young age

overall: this can really develop into something, but will need a good amount of time. There is a real pretty nuanced quality to it that makes it extremely attractive and perfumed

  • 2005 Domaine de Montille Beaune 1er Cru Les Sizies 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

nose: rather tight, but power packed nose of earth, brown spices, dark red cherries and tart tones of raspberries. Very youthful on the nose, and very tight at the moment

taste: big acidity and firm tannins give this a excellent spine, along with good tones of earth, brown spices, and dark red fruits.

overall:The tannins and acidity are a bit oppressive right now, but there is quality lurking undernath this. Definitely needs another 5 years at least, but should be a real good robust burg in the course of time

  • 2005 Domaine Bertagna Vougeot 1er Cru Clos de la Perrière 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vougeot 1er Cru

nose: very tight nose with some tones of dark red cherries, dark spices, bits of earth and sour red fruits. There is good depth and what pokes through is extremely good

taste: very smooth feel with high acidity and rich tannins make this a bit tough, but the feel on this is very classy. Round and balanced tones of sour red fruits, dark spices and dark red cherries poke their head out

overall: very young. This needs a good 8-10 years to really let it start to become a great wine. There is a lot of good material here right now, but its being hidden a bit from being so young

  • 2005 Jean-Claude Boisset Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

nose: good depth and robust nose filled with earth tones, dark spices, dark red cherries, and dark red fruits. Has some power behind it at this time

taste: big tannins and high acidity overpower this right now, but good tones of dark spices, dark red cherries and some dark berry tones balance well together with good depth

overall: very young right now and will improve a lot with at least another 8 years. Needs time to fully unwind, but should fully reward patience as there is a lot to like here already

Flight 4 - Grand Crus (12 Notes)

  • 1996 Gérard Raphet Clos Vougeot Cuvée Unique 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

nose: fairly evolved nose with tones of earth, dark florals, spices, and some bits iron and dark red fruits. Comes off as fully mature on the nose and isn't all that deep or expressive

taste: well balanced with very good tones of red cherries, earth, dark florals and spice tones. Fully mature on the palate and coming off as advanced with medium acidity

overall: It was odd when I saw the vintage on this. It really came off as older, and certainly didn't have the acidic streak that a lot of 96s have right now. A nice wine, but doesn't come off as Grand Cru quality and more along the lines of a good Premier Cru

  • 2003 Domaine Francois Lamarche Grands-Echezeaux 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

nose: bold and robust tones of dark cherries, tart raspberries, hints of earth, iodine, and some asian spices work very well together. A big boxer of a burg on the nose that brings about a brooding quality to it

taste: good depth and good feel, but the there is an awkwardness in the tones of dark cherries, ripe raspberries, bits of earth, and asian spices. Medium+ acidity and chewy tannins take over a bit much right now

overall: feels like it has the goods to emerge into an interesting Grands Ech. The nose has a real robust quality to it as does the palate, but there is a bit of awkwardness right now that needs to be worked out with some more age

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2003 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

nose: rich and dense nose of red cherries, spice tones, tart raspberries, and dark red fruits. A lot of power behind it, and doesn't fully come off as burgundy as the vintage shines through right now

taste: big medium feel with medium acidity and some chewy tannins. Big and rich tones of dark red fruits, red cherries, spices, and various berry tones. Doesn't fully come off as burgundy, but isn't a californized burg either. There certainly is a brightness right now to the tones

overall: if anything, it certainly shows off the vintage. An interesting wine that certainly needs some more time sideways to really develop. If the wine can smooth out the rough edges that exist right now and tone down some of the brightness, then this could be a real exotic burg in about 5-8 years

  • 2003 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

nose: broad and powerful nose of red fruits, dark red cherries, dark spices, earth tones and bits of tart berry tones. Rich with a brighter edge to the fruit as would be expected from 03. Excellent depth on the wine, but also fairly tight too

taste: firm tannins show themselves on the wine with medium acidity along with rich tones of sour raspberries, red fruits, dark red cherries, earth tones and dark spices. Good depth with good richness to the wine, it certainly still is under some hard tannins at this young stage

overall: a quality chambertin. While it isn't a mountain mover, it is a quality GC from great terroir. This needs a good amount of time to let it shine, at least another 8 or so years so that the power can really come through and have the expression show some more. It won't ever be a profound wine, but in the realm of GCs, this is affordable and certainly wouldn't be a bad wine to have in the cellar as it should provide some real intrigue as it ages

  • 2003 Thibault Liger-Belair Clos Vougeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

nose: exotic and tart nose filled with asian and jerk spices, dark red cherries, blackberries, earth, and some bits of brown spices too with a touch of sour berries. Good depth and robust on the nose and a bit tight too

taste: youthful and powerful with big tannins and medium+ acidity along with rich tones of dark berries, exotic spices, dark red cherries, and bits of earth tones

overall: very young and needs a good amount of time. Powerful and very rich, this could be a real interesting clos vougeot in a good 8-10 years. The bigness isn't over the top as it still retains a burgundy sensibility to it, but being a amped up version

  • 2004 Gros Frère et Sœur Richebourg 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

nose: this was on a completely different level from the other wines with a real pungent and lovely tones filled with purple florals, spices, red currants, and red fruits. Very light on its feet, but enchanting at the same time

taste: Lovely and deftly balanced medium feel with tart medium+ acidity letting you know its a very young wine. Pretty and satiny tones of purple florals, spices, red cherries, and bits of red currants all balance out well together

overall: This was on a different class from the other wines. This was extremely enjoyable, but was also showing its youth. Its a real lovely wine that can use a few more years before it can really sing. This had the benefit of being decanted for a while

  • 2004 Louis Jadot Charmes-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

nose: fairly tight nose and takes a bit of coaxing to get very good tones of dark red fruits, spice tones, bits of berries, chalk tones and a touch of stemmy green tones. Well balanced and has very nice depth at this point

taste: A muted on the palate with medium/high acidity and some good tannins with well layered tones of cherries, dark red fruits, earth spice tones, and a slight bit of green. Has a real good and classy medium feel to it

overall: this is very young, and does have a touch of the green. It is a bit more noticeable then the groffier, but its not that pronounced on either of them and this one should need a bit of downtime for rest, so it may integrate.

  • 2006 Domaine Francois Lamarche La Grande Rue 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Grande Rue Grand Cru

nose: tight and muscular nose with deep tones of red fruits, dark red cherries, raspberries, red currants, and various spice tones with a hint of red florals. Lots of elegance and has the depth and class that one would expect of a grand cru

taste: very high acidity and tannins with muscular tones of red fruits, dark red cherries, red florals, dark berries, and loads of spices. Great polished feel with a lot of depth hiding underneath the big tannins and acidity at this young stage

overall: this should be a real fun wine when its fully ready, which will take awhile. There is a lot of class and elegance in this wine while also having a muscular side to it too that provides

  • 2006 David Duband Charmes-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

nose: nice and robust with a tart quality to it with what pokes through. Well balanced tones of brown spices, earth, dark red cherries, and bits of sour berries all blend well together. Good depth right now, but doesn't seem at full grand cru level

taste: really good medium body with medium/high acidity and rich tannins with well balanced tones of brown spices, dark red cherries, some earthen tones, sour berries, and some floral bits sneak up on the back end

overall: extremely young and a very nice charmes. This will need some time to really emerge, but right now comes off as a higher end premier cru rather then having a real class and feel on the palate and nose

  • 2006 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

nose: robust and youthful on the nose with excellent tones of spices, earth, dark red fruits, and some real good tones of red currants. very good depth on the nose, though everything else is holding back a bit right now

taste: big tannins and big medium/high acidity show the youth of the wine. Robust and masculine feel on the palate with really good tones of spices, earth, dark red fruits, and dark cherries all balance out well together

overall: in need of some serious downtime. Certainly shows off what clos vougeot can do, but the acidity and tannins are a bit much right now to really get into this wine. This will certainly improve with more time

  • 2006 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

nose: lovely and very perfumed nose filled with red currants, spice tones, roses, violets, and other various red florals tones with a nice touch of bing cherries making their way through. Great depth and very classy on the nose. Not as tight as I would expect, but not fully giving everything just yet either

taste: great medium/high acidity really lets itself be known with a real polished and classy feel that is backed up by well layered tones of red currants, spices, cherries, red berries, roses and a touch of red florals all melding well together

overall: this is a beautiful young burg, that also needs a good amount of time. More powerful right now, this needs a bit of time to settle in and let itself get fully into the swing of things. Lots to like right now with a good decant, but this really is demanding requisite cellaring time

  • 2006 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes Mares 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

nose: very young and tight on the nose, but with a real good masculine style to it with tones of dark red fruits, dark florals, asian spices, and red cherries. Very good depth and layering showing off right now, but is very tight at the moment

taste: powerful and deep medium feel with well balanced tones of asian spices, red cherries, dark frloals, and a good bit of raspberries. Big acidity tears up the mid palate a bit, but the class and pedigree is certainly shown

overall: a complete baby right now. Showing off fairly well right now and should improve greatly with a good 10 years. A lot of stuffing on this right now makes it hard to get much right now, but what it does show is really good and has a ton of promise

Flight 5 - an added bonus (1 Note)

  • 2006 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

nose: extremely well balanced and very deep nose that is just filled with layered tones of black pepper, bacon fat, black cherries, smoke, bits of florals and great underlying spice tones. It doesn't necessarily scream, but instead works out a brawny richness that also has a beguiling side to it

taste: Great melded tones of smoked meats, black pepper, bacon fat, black cherries, and bits of floral tones on the palate with a great medium/full feel and good tannins and medium acidity. Well layered and very classy at the same time

overall: just a baby, but shows off what could turn into a stupendous wine. It already is an amazing wine, but is just so young at the same time and needs to really let itself emerge. A real breath taking young chave that is great now and should be great in 25 years

Closing

Lots of great wine to go around. The quality was really good across the board. The 04s showed the best they could and its still a vintage that doesn't do too much for me outside of a few wines. The 03s showed better then I figured they would and a fair amount of the ones that were opened would make interesting cellar candidates.
