2006 Arnot-Roberts Syrah "North Block" Hudson VineyardCarneros more |
11/15/2008 - AMM3RD wrote: 90 pointsThis is way too young, and seemed out of place with the 2001 Rion Vougeot + 2001 Caymus Special Selection. Dark fruits. Needs time. Has balance, fruit and spice, but not quite there. Wait 2-3 years before drinking again, will be 92-94 then. Raw material is there. Recommended...AMM |

On the nose it explodes with cherry pie fillings; you know cooked cherries and sugar. You can smell it when pouring the wine. Also hints of spearmint and freshly crushed black pepper. |

9/23/2008 - Love4Vino wrote: NRPopped and then poured over 2 hours. First for me from this producer. Deep dark with aromas of cedar, menthol; rosemary and lots of black currants. It has an extracted fruit profile with lots of blueberries and dark plum flavors and an eye popping 15.5%abv but was excellently hidden. A bit sweet initially but rounded off later. Long, long finish but agree on previous taster that there is some drying on the mid palate. Overall, a wonderful new world cab. |

7/14/2008 - ruddy wrote: 93 pointsNose of raspberries and apricots with some pepper. Have to agree with Gary V about the bbq flavor, but maybe I'm just easily influenced. Bright and tangy in the mouth, great with roasted meat, finish is somewhat short. Not my fave from A-R by far but a nice wine. We'll save the other bottle for a year or two and see where it goes. Oh, and the label is beautiful, if that means anything to you. |

7/5/2008 - glaze3 wrote: NRIt's been almost a year to the day since I last had this wine. the nose is bursting with raspberry jam and fresh cut flowers. ripe red fruits, roasted meat, and some tobacco on the palette, there is some oak, but not that much of a distraction. Overall this is an extremely well balanced wine, and quite tasty. Easily 93pts. |

The palate has good balance, a bit much on the oak though the mid-palate but dissipates before the finish. Medium weight with a lot of cherries and some earthy dirty components. This is pretty good overall! |

The palate had the bluebrry pie, the boysenberry, tar, some cedar box, and bacon fat. This needed about an hour to shine, although I liked it out of the bottle. I find there is a real change from moment to moment (hour to hour?) when a quality Syrah is opened...more so than say a Cabernet or Pinot. This had wonderful body. Not the most elegant Syrah I have had, but no brute either. Some bottle time should make this even better. A long finish completed the whole experience. |

2/1/2008 - pakabear wrote: 93 pointsGreat nose, very expansive dark fruit, blackberry, plum and casis galore! Extracted wine on the palate to be sure, some bitterness in the mid-palate keep the wine from hitting the perfect balance it needs, but good dark fruit that lingers on for a while. Very good stuff. |

1/10/2008 - ruddy wrote: 88 pointsDrunk far too soon--the wine really needed a long decant, so I don't know how much better the wine can be. But what we had did have some good fruit, a lovely herbal nose and an incredible black olive flavor that was remarkably distinct. However, the extremely tannic mouthfeel made it tough going. I think there is a lean, elegant cool-climate syrah in there somewhere, but it just never really came all the way out of its shell. |

6/21/2007 - ruddy wrote: 92 pointsThe winery was nice enough to throw in a bottle of this blend with my mailing list order, so I thought I'd return the favor by posting a note. Dark garnet in the glass. Nose is very cabernet-like (cassis and dust). In the mouth, it's all about inky darkness--black fruits, smoky brush and tar. Nicely balanced, this is a wine that rewards patience with purity. Finish is fairly long, and a bit drying. Probably should have waited a year or two to drink this one. |

4/21/2007 - bevetroppo wrote: 89 pointsOh the horror! Stuck in an expensive steak house with an expensive wine list comprised of almost exclusively American wines, with the few Old World selections deliberately (or so it would seem) either off vintage or grossly overpriced. My wife and I were both going to have steak so I had to pick something, and figured a nice peppery syrah would have the fruit to do battle with obligatory creamed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes and the tannin to handle the char and the marbling. But I didn't recognize a lot of these wines, largely because I don't pay any attention to California as a rule. The Arnot-Roberts, a name I had never seen before, was a blind shot picked largely because it was labeled Santa Rosa on the wine list (secretly hoping it wasn't going to be some hideous "blockbuster") and it carried the gentle (?) price of $64. I noticed it had 14.8% alcohol, but that's pretty much the price of admission in California. Anyway, it was truly a pleasant surprise. Dark berry scents emerged from the glass with enough acidity that my mouth watered, though I admit I was pretty damn hungry after spending 20 minutes desperately searching for a wine. On the palate, the fruit and slightly smoky flavors were nicely articulated without any overstatement. There was excellent balance and even finesse , really round and feminine with a velvety texture. If anything the tannins were subdued for such a young wine, and the slightly flat finish was the only thing that held me back from a 90 point rating. Subsequent research uncovered that this winery is run by two young but experienced winemakers, one of whom is a cooper. Grapes from this wine are predominantly sourced from Napa (Beckstoffer Melrose Vineyard-65%). They make their own barrels, use native yeasts with no fining or filtration. This is a property to watch. |
