A round, soft, voluptuous kind of wine. Lots of cocoa, dark chocolate, black cherry, some coffee and orange zest too. Black tea with some air. Acidity is not very high but it doesn’t feel like it’s missing in the grand scheme of things.

A very pleasurable wine; only detraction is that it’s 14.5% abv. It’s not a heavy wine but the alcohol warmth does poke through. I feel like this is one of those wines that’s worth checking out now, it doesn’t need additional cellaring, but it will probably continue to evolve over time. Recommend this be served at cellar temp. 93-94.

Pale ruby in the glass. Huge flint on the nose complemented by strawberry, blackberry & blackcurrant. Light-bodied, very balanced, soft tannins. An elegant style of Pinot that delivers at this price range. Don’t expect complexity, expect sheer drinkability. To the moon!

See previous notes. Hazy. Garnet in glass, bordering on tawny. Medium plus intensity on the nose. Sour cherries, barnyard funk and cotton candy. Complex with good acidity.

Langer, rotfruchtiger Abgang. Ab sofort ein Hit, grosse Reserven.

Extremely reductive at first pour; needs hours in the decanter to open up and show some fruit, but the strong struck match remains. Really reminded me of Dog Point at least in this regard. The palate is quite nice with a soft texture and good freshness. Not too much oak. Solid finish. 16/20

New Zealand Trip; 2/10/2024-2/24/2024: Coravin. Toasty, buttery nose. Rich caramel and apple, very good acidity, and a huge dose of oak. Good length but the barrel treatment is excessive.

Brief note written from memory. Under screwcap. Perhaps bottle variation, but this bottle seemed a little advanced and a touch funky (not in a good way) and unhygenic. Having said that, in its earthy, dried herbs and savoury, slightly rusty style, with dried and fresh red berries and cherries, it wasn't without charm. Interesting and fully accessible. With bright acidity, it paired well with food. At year 8, it should be cruising but, on this evidence, I'd be drinking in the next few years.

Tuesday night drinks at home with neighbourhood folks. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Initially dominated by flinty reduction on the nose. Blows off after a while to reveal all the same notes I got as before, but with the oak a little more integrated. Hint of tropical fruit added.
Lots of geologic stony minerality. Still great acidity. Mealy oatmeal. Lots of substance and long finish.

Apparently in my world “soon” means exactly one year, as the last bottle was opened a year ago today. Decanted off its fine sediment and poured a glass. Youthful ruby/crimson color with no discernible bricking. Cinnamon and warm spice notes dominate the bouquet, with black cherry and pine sap underneath. There’s also an herbaceous quality, something along the lines of rosemary. Flavors of baked cherry, rhubarb and cranberry with warm spice tones carrying the midpalate and finish. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, with enough acidity to provide lift and freshness. Finishes with good length. I wish we had waited to open this bottle with friends or one of the blind tasting groups as this would have turned some heads and surprised a few people. I’ll update later if there is anything else worth noting as we drink through the bottle, but suffice to say this is drinking well and probably at peak for my palate.

We’re about 45 minutes in and still on the first glasses but this has added a floral note and also a sweet, meaty quality…it reminds me a little of a Honeybaked ham, if that gives a frame of reference. It has also put on some weight on the palate, and the fruit has taken on a little darker profile. Really, really nice.

Not a huge NZ sauvignon blanc drinker so do not have much to benchmark this against. A mix of tangy gooseberry and grapefruit with some tropical fruit notes on the palate. A bit rounder than expected with 13.5% abv. Medium+ acidity with a tangy/tart finish. Definitely more enjoyable at a colder serving temperature.

Medium lemon in the glass. Mad reduction when just opened, smelled really bad. After 45 minutes of decanting it opens up to notes of lime, lemon, green apple, oatmeal. Drunk this over 3 hours, but it didn’t really impress. It feels like there is all this oak and acidity on the frontline, but no depth or development beyond this. Quite thin.

Murky, bricky red. Takes a bit of coaxing (in fact regretting not giving this a few hours in the decanter) to show off it’s delicate-yet-rustic Pinot perfume. Stemmy, herbal and fine-boned. Paired beautifully with Radiohead ‘In Rainbows’.
Ageing slowly and gracefully under Stelvin. Drink or leave to your future self or others. (93 Excellent wine)

12.8% biodynamic. Stored temperature controlled since delivery from Garagiste in 2011. PnP. Medium cloudy red, orange rim. Still fresh tasting. Filled a small flip top glass bottle, put into ref then retasted a few days later. There’s a faint volatile and soy sauce note in the nose, but purity in the fruit is evident, tending more to the red fruited. Good acidity, resolved tannins. Slight blood orange note on the long finish. Very good. Has held up well. Have one more bottle.

During a walkabout tasting, so only brief impressions. Lovely discovery here. The Pyramid Valley wines were delightful, translucent red color, very light on the palate too, much lighter than the Felton Road or Bell Hill wines for example, Volnay style really. The Angel flower was floral and ethereal (91pt) while the earth smoke (93pt) was a step up in palate presence and richness as well as complexity, more Morey.
