Split bottle between two days. Day one PNP between two Zalto BDX glasses, recorked/cellar temp with bottle resting on it's side.

Day 1: Dark garnet in color. Nose of espresso, cassis and dark red fruits.
Beautifully silky tannins with nice midpalate weight. Long finish. I really enjoyed this wine at PNP. Consumed half bottle over 1.5 hrs.

94

Day 2: OX in the bottle and this wine became a chocolate blueberry milk shake. Not sure what this means!? Residual sugars.. maybe? It's been a while since I've seen a wine do this and it got heavier as we got to the last glass. Had to dump out remainder as it was almost undrinkable. Easy to say disappointed and hope it was just bottle variation. Asking for a friend.... what gives?

This 100% Sauvignon Blanc has a generosity and precision that are exceptional (as is the price), but this is plainly one of the best of its varietal coming out of Napa (or, for that matter, America). Light yellow, almost silver in color; medium in body (at least at the moment, with more weight coming with age); aromas of grapefruit, green apple, salt water, and crushed rock. Flavors of quince, gooseberry, under-ripe pear, and quartz, with a zippy finish that has enough body to be both refreshing and intriguing. 14.4% alcohol. Decant an hour if drinking now.

I tasted this on the same night as two other (and way cheaper) 2019 Napa SBs - an Hourglass and a Peter Michael L'Apres-Midi - and the Lail ran laps around both of them, offering more freshness, viscosity, and energy (Man on the Wire, all that). Aged in 100% French oak for 18 months. With the caveat that I prefer these kinds of wines on the younger side: 95+ at the moment, with upside in another 6-18 months.

Doubled decanted and drank after about 3 hours of air. Nose of creme de cassis, roses, forest floor and dark chocolate. This has a fantastic interplay of dark fruit and powerful earthy elements. Full bodied, with super grainy tannins, good acidity and lovely purity, it begs for time in the bottle to stretch its legs and allow some of the super powerful core to expand. Long finish shows great potential.

This is more approachable than the 2018 edition, and yet it really needs 3-5 years to integrate more unless you love the concentrated power. I found it to be pretty awesome and I love the structure and complexity that is to come.

Cork was popped about 3hrs before taking to a restaurant for dinner. Incredible wine. Just fantastic. Classically beautiful nose, with notes of cherries, creme de cassis and vanilla. Absolutely gorgeous in the glass - red fruit dominant. This is seamless on the pallet. Very concentrated and powerful, but at the same time smooth as silk. The finish is long and dramatic. You can drink this wine without regret as long as you give it some air. Gorgeous. 97+ (might be too low).

Large standout in a weekend of drinking superb Napa Cabernets. This one not only shone beautifully as several others but also had a tractor beam draw that made people sneak sips out of each others glasses when they “weren’t looking”. That game and the forward leaning upbeat nature of this captivating wine worked together as the bottle earned its place in our book of special memories.

At 10 years of age this could have been mistaken for the recent release. Freshness of fruit, silky tannins, and a very specific winemaking style that has become a bit predictable vintage to vintage. One of the bottlings that got me into wine. Quality juice that I think a good majority of Napa drinkers enjoy and I recommend to most folks looking to explore Napa.

On day two it lost a lot of precision and almost rolled over. I've experience this with most vintage and think the drinking window is 4-6 hours on most of these wines.

So after the disappointing experience earlier this week I decide to pull another cork to verify bottle variation.

This bottle had a lot more going for it over the two days consumed. More acid, tannin and the fruit was more round on the palate with no steep fall off on day to from extended ox. With that said I think the drinking window when opening this wine should be same day. I was also encouraged by the winery to do so and they should know!

96 day one and 94 day two.

This is one of the few 2019s that I have had which still needs some time to sleep. Coravin'ed on day 1 which was okay. Opened on day 2, decanted for 3 hours and drank over the next 3 hours. It got better with time!

Dark purple in the glass, with black and blue fruit, mineral and chocolate notes. Tannins are powerful but are starting to integrate into the wine. Finish is long. The blend of mountain and valley floor grapes seems to work!

Three hour decant. Very deep dark purple magenta color. Blackberry, boysenberry, flint, violet, vanilla cream, and subtle baker’s chocolate on the nose. Smooth, tongue drying palate. Firm, full, but low intensity tannins on the longish finish.

This seems a bit flat footed at the moment, but has good potential. The back end structure needs to fill out. I’ll try to wait 6-12 months before having my next bottle. Should be pretty good once it truly enters its drinking window.

This is just a stunning wine. Haven't had much of any experience with Lail, but given the reasonable price tag and Melka pedigree I decided to go ahead and give this a run. Smart move. Expressive nose of violets, black currant, forest floor and tobacco leaf. Amazing power and grace on the palate, this hits you with stunning purity and crazy concentrated depth of flavor. Refined tannins, hardly noticeable oak influence, super energetic, graceful and yet it's like that Tesla with motors on every wheel - floating right up to 120 in 4 seconds. Finish is very, very long and totally satisfying. Fantastic wine. 96++

Brought this bottle to a friends house to be paired with Kuu Sushi.

Lail Georgia might be the best domestic SB. Would love to know if there is something else out there that competes with this wine.

This wine is certainly one of the denser, but also more complex 2012s. While the stuffing and stature was there right from the start, it needed several hours in the decanter to become perfectly round and harmonious. It felt a bit more like a 2015 or 2016 than the usually slightly cooler 2012s, especially at the beginning of the evening. But this wine it is destined to be one of the more long-lived and certainly best 2012s thanks to the superb complexity and delineation as well as the structural frame to support extended ageing. At first at 95/96 points, last sips rather 97/98.

TN: A fresh nose with ripe dark berries and cherries, baking spices. Very harmonious, without any heat. On the palate it showed all the Napa sexiness but in a cooler, fresher style with more minerality. Superb texture and weight (especially with more time) with a broad array of aromas ranging from asian and baking spices through all colors of berries with strong mineral, herbal aromas as well as some smoke scents. There are a lot of very-fine and ripe tannins, a very, very good balance and very good length.

Decanting: Good from the start, improved with air. 4 hours in the decanter seem right. No harm in opening a bottle today but should further improve with age.

Revisiting after replacement bottle sent via Lail (Thank you Chantal for standing behind your wine!) . Night and day difference. Must have been a off bottle on 8/16/19 as this was fantastic!

Very young with loads of beautiful expressive blue and red fruit on the nose and mouth. I would not have guessed this was a 2012 bottling as this is just getting started. For my taste this should not be opened for another 2 years minimum. I'm loving the expressiveness of the Vine Hill Ranch grapes and density of Mole Hill.

Hold and be reward IMO.

Three hour slow ox. Very very deep dark electric magenta color. Blackberry, graphite, baker’s chocolate Oreo cookie, and subtle tobacco. Smooth, dry, somewhat chalky palate. Satiny, mouth coating acidity. Firm, full tannins on the longish finish.

I feel like this has opened up quite a bit since my last bottle (a year ago). A two hour decant would likely improve my score a bit. This is a well built wine for the money. Very solid QPR.

Coravin day 1. PNP day two.

I've been a Robin's Nest member for about 4 years now. J Daniel is pretty consistent bottling year in and out. This was no different. Plush and polished. Dark fruit, licorice and notes of tobacco spice. No sharp edges for such a young wine.

Tasted double blind. A true unicorn here. The highlight was the softness and weightlessness, without loosing the cut. It was missing that extra precision and intensity the Dana Hershey SB 2016 (97pts) in the next glass had. 93pts.

TN: Medium expressive nose, minty, lychee. On the palate this shows really soft, round, absolutely weightless, with herbs, minty, lychee, coconut, some green apple. With time more red fruit, which seems strange but was intriguing. Very good balance.

Decanting: No extensive decanting necessary.

In a word - spectacular! My first Mole Hill but won't be my last. This is amazingly powerful and age worthy, but still open enough to drink now with a little air. That may be owed to the generous vintage.

Starts with lots of cassis fruit, tilled soil, iron ore and super expressive violet flower notes. The palate is seriously packed with layers of massively concentrated fruit, but like all the greats, it isn't heavy, cloying or overbearing. It handles the size with grace, showing off super well integrated tannins, a suave and silky mouthfeel and a skyscraper like finish that goes on for days. Easily the best wine I've had from Lail, and a superstar in the making. This will age well for a few decades, so you can wait, but it's sure fun to have now. Nearly perfect.

TOP SHELF WINE WEEKEND: Rich without being rich, day one of this wine was fairly plush, pumping full throttled black fruit and chocolate notes out like a firehose. A baby Vice Versa M7, the Lail was unsurprisingly showing like a version of the Melka M7 concoction served next to it. The Lail maintained more poise and seemed less gushing than the M7 at the time, but both were flavor hounds hunting for fruit to pounce on the palate and proffer lusciousness and succulence. The grip on the Lail is fine indeed, with a honed focus that keeps the core in perfect center. A bit of scraps left over for day two present even more focus concentration and convergence. There is heightened delineation and cadence, with a rhythm that defines classism-meets-modernity. An exquisite bottle of wine.

Bouquet was fantastic morphing from currants and vanilla to tar and tobacco in the first 30 min. recognizing that the wine was very young with a long cellar potential (indeed needs 5+ yrs), I decanted 18 hours before a special dinner where the wine was chosen in a food pairing. Whilst I was excited about the wine opening and developing deep, complex flavors, it seemed like it went from being tight to being a well done, but not great, cab. I was hoping for so much more and ultimately determined that the price point of $130 was too high when I can find bottles of equivalent quality in the $70 range.

This J Daniel Cuvee 16 was locked up tight a PNP. With some ox in the glass the wine softened up a bit. Still primarily dark bramble fruits and chewy tannins. Not the typically Melka experience of silky plushness that I associate with a "style". A bit more serious than the 15 I opened up shortly after. It will be fun to see were this wine goes as it's a bit muddled and in need of further development.
