Black fruit dominant, with charcoal, blackberry, soil, and bitter chocolate leading the charge. Dare I say “modern” on the attack, with a push of fruit and power at first, relaxing its flex halfway through execution, finishing aptly dry but still with a notable flavorhound salivary yum thing going on that holds interest. Yankee in the front, Parisian in the back. A little jammy and blocky overall, but a chewy bit o’ fun to be had even now in such an infant stage.

Decanted for a total of three hours, which helped ease the angularity of the back end, but didn’t manage to help fill out the mid palate so much at this juncture. Hold for a few years and hope it doesn’t shut down, or get more awkward, or whatever thing that happens to wine when we make excuses for its goofy behavior in the hopes it’ll get better.

Not a disappointing wine at all (though it may sound kinda like that), but rather a very good wine with a good QPR that is likely to improve with some bottle time. I love the dark gothic profile here. One of my favorite styles. 93-94+.

Nose: [56°-58°] Great perfume of red flowers and violets, bright red fruits like fresh cherries and cranberries, fresh red plums, a nice acidity where it makes the fruits smell almost tart (in a good way), damp forest floor and clean bare oak (like the underside of tree bark). [64°] Branches and twigs develop with time.

Palate: [58°] Deep red and black fruit blended with deep earth, moss, soft spice and damp oak. [64°+] Dark minerals with savory graphite, bitter savory tannin and steeped tea lingers pleasantly on the finish.

Attributes: Clear dark ruby. Dry with medium-plus amounts of fine, chewy tannin. Medium to medium-plus body with medium to medium-plus acidity. Good finish of at least 16-18 seconds.

Thoughts: Amazing what decanting can do. Had a taste prior to decanting and this was really energetic and wild, almost rude while showing no restraint. But after about 5 hours, the wine showed what it is really made of. I love the brooding forest aspects here. The fruit is there but it plays more of a support role. The finish I particularly loved with the dark minerals and savory tannin. I don't have even the slightest idea of how this would turn out with years of cellar time but I can only imagine good things (I hope). 96+

Serving notes: Bordeaux glass. Emptied bottle into a decanter at cellar temp ~55° for 5 hours before serving, continued to decant while consumed over another 2.5 hours (total 7.5 hrs). Recommend serving ~64° with a decant of at least 5-6 hours at cellar temp if opening now or cellar for at least 6-8 years.

This was drinking amazingly well already. So fruit forward and ripe, yet plenty of layers of complexity emerging already. Lovely balance and long beautiful finish. Still very noticeable tannins but for me this was drinkable already.

Not a TN but a question to all of you who know this wine much better than I do.

I'm taking this to a French dinner this evening, and was wondering about decant time?

Some more recent TN's suggest 2 hours, others much longer. There aren't too many recent notes so thats why I'm here.

Any suggestions/thoughts would be appreciated, cheers...

I apologize to all those, who seem to know more about wine. This was my birthday present. It was not a wow experience, to me 160€ is a lot of money. The wine was a big disappointment like many wines I had above 100€. What disturbs me is the taste of alcohol, the wine is sharp at this state. No balance, no excitement.

Lovely perfectly aged classic Bordeaux. Showing better than I expected for the vintage and in the mid to late drinking window right now. Cork fully saturated. Color is youthful and intense nose of classic bordeaux aromas—tobacco, pencil lead and plums. A bit of barnyard that blows off with a few minutes of air. This was drinking best after first opening. After a few hours seemed to develop a bitter note on the finish which lowered the score a point or so. Perhaps I should have had it standing longer to let the sediment settle.

1989 Château Lynch-Bages

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/4/2023 - JimHow Likes this wine: 100 points

So a couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of drinking a 1990 Beausejour Duffau in Florida. This St. Emilion was every bit as thrilling as expected from its RMP100 rating. It was stunning, a pinnacle of everything that brilliant merlot from the right bank has to offer: Amazing bouquet, seductive a point fruit on the palate that was so sensual and yet not losing its classiness. It was a huge crowd pleaser at a table among other epic right bankers.

This 1989 Chateau Lynch Bages is not that. 1989 Lynch Bages, in my opinion, is the greatest wine ever produced by man. I have had over 100 bottles over the years. But it is a wine that should never be brought to a tasting where other Bordeaux greats are served. 1989 Lynch Bages usually gets lost in the shuffle because its greatness is so nuanced. It is the ultimate expression of Pauillac. And for that reason alone it is not going to be a big, upfront, flashy, seductive St. Emilion. It is Oxford/Cambridge restraint, nuance, breed. And the other hallmark of this wine, which I have mentioned many times, is that it needs a huge amount of oxygen. This is a 200 year wine. It is STILL incredibly youthful, at now 34 years old. When I first opened this pristine bottle last night there was very little on the nose, but I could tell this was going to be yet another great bottle of 1989 Lynch. I decanted. Slowly, as the night evolved, the classic, classic lead pencil and immaculate cassis emerged. Drinking 1989 Lynch Bages is a religious experience for me. I feel the wonderment of the universe, not because I'm buzzed -- this baby is only 12.5% -- but because it just makes me appreciate how lucky we are to be in this sliver of time and place, with five senses, experiencing this instance of a vintage that will be here and gone in an instant of time. It is a glorious, magnificent wine, it is da Vinci, Chopin, Shakespeare, and Caruso. The color is still a deep ruby/purple with absolutely no evidence of fading at the rim. We used to get it for $35 back in the day. I just bought another bottle from K&L last night for $395 plus tax. It went recently for $700 at auction. The finish on this absolute classic lingers for a minute or more, like a 1986 Mouton, numbing the taste buds at the back of your tongue. It is a left bank Medoc from Pauillac. So don't expect it to be a big, sexy, chocolatey right bank merlot. It is complexity and nuance. The lead pencil defines this wine. As always, the last sips are the best. The 1989 Lynch Bages is at the back end of a culmination of efforts from Jean-Michel Cazes in the 1980s that is among the greatest stretch of wines produced in centuries. I used to be involved in politics here in Maine and I remember running into Olympia Snow in a wine shop in Falmouth during holiday season, she was a friend even though I was a Democrat and she was a Republican. I was buying several bottles of the 1989 and 1990 Lynch, I convinced her to buy a bottle of the '89 for their Christmas dinner, it was going for about $75 per bottle at that time, it would have been about 1999. The 1989 Lynch has been the poster child of our website, www.bordeauxwineenthusiasts, for over 23 years. I think we have actually moved the market for this wine, it is now selling routinely for over $500, and went for $700 at auction this week. Jean-Michel Cazes wrote to me personally back in 2003, the confluence of 1980s Bordeaux and its 12.5% wines, with the influences of Jean-Michel and his wine making philosophies, produced this Mona Lisa, this Hamlet, a wine that transcends into philosophy and religion. It is Chopin's nocturnes. It is stunning in its left bank subtlety, restraint, class, and power combined with elegance. Magnificent. This effort last night was as brilliant as any of the over 100 times I've had this wine. I rate it, yet again, at 100+++.

Tasted immediately after opening. No balance. Open, but with sense of deadness. Definitely not full bodied. I’m either off my rocker, or hopefully, bought a dud while on vacation… I’ve had 2005 Pauillac, and this is not that.

I know I promised off wine for 90 days, but she beckoned me from the cellar and I caved as I always do.

As the golden elixir kissed my lips, a rush of nostalgia took hold, transporting me back to a time when life was simpler, more innocent, yet ripe with adventure and discovery. The 2009 Lynch Bages, a wine steeped in history and tradition, embodies the essence of an era long past, stirring memories of moonlit wanderings through the enchanting vineyards of France.

My first encounter with the 2009 Lynch Bages was akin to revisiting a cherished chapter from the book of my life—a chapter written in the verdant meadows of France, where as a young child, I roamed freely through sprawling vineyards, guided by the faint glow of starlight on moonless nights sneaking doing what kids do. There, amidst the whispers of the vines and the gentle rustle of leaves, I embarked on a lifelong affair with the enigmatic charm of wines, an affair that would shape my very existence.

Upon uncorking this opulent treasure, a sense of anticipation swirled within me, akin to the thrill of setting foot on unknown lands during my adventures across the globe. The initial encounter with the 2009 Lynch Bages was a revelation—an intense and spirited affair that mirrored the vibrant hues of youth, entwined with the complexities of a wine maiden's allure.

As the wine danced gracefully in the glass, its youthful exuberance was undeniable. Like a seasoned adventurer relishing the aroma of distant lands, my senses were greeted by a symphony of scents—an amalgamation of wet earth and crushed gravel, interwoven with an intriguing spiciness that teased the palate. It “could be” a pop n poor but it’s a bordeaux, I must wait……The bouquet, reminiscent of the rich, fertile soils of the vineyards, conjured vivid memories of those moonlit strolls amidst the vines, where every step seemed to echo the history and resilience of the terroir.

It was as if each sip of this illustrious vintage carried me back to those moonlit nights, surrounded by the fragrance of blossoming grapes and the whispers of the night wind. Each swirled sip revealed layers of flavor that spoke volumes of the wine's youth yet promised an evolution that only time and patience could unveil. The initial burst of spiciness, akin to the fervor of youthful passion, was tempered by the subtle embrace of dark fruits—a melange of blackcurrants and plums, their sweetness lingering like a stolen kiss on a summer's eve.

As I savored each sip, I couldn't help but draw parallels between this exquisite wine and the journey of a hopeless romantic. Much like the tender emotions of a youthful heart intertwined with the wisdom of experience, the 2009 Lynch Bages encapsulates the duality of life—youthful exuberance mingled with the depth and complexity of maturity.

In conclusion, the 2009 Lynch Bages, with its tantalizing blend of spiciness, wet earth, and crushed gravel, embodies the essence of an unforgettable journey—a journey through vine-clad landscapes, under the embrace of a star-studded sky, where every sip is a tribute to the past and a celebration of the enigmatic journey that lies ahead. Cheers to the enduring romance of wine, the embodiment of life's most treasured moments, and the timeless allure of Lynch Bages.

NOTE TO SELF: DECANT ONE HOUR, GLASS BY GLASS…….

Nose: [58°] Wet autumn leaves, damp earth and gentle spiced oak. Deep black fruit with just a touch of purple fruit. Violet aromas with a bit of intensity. Reminds me of the attack of a strong perfume but turned down a lot, where it's finally bearable.

Palate: [58°] Deep black fruits, savory river minerals, silvery graphite, steeped black tea and a spiced oak that has been really softened from being too damp. [60°] With some time, deep earth surfaces more, melding with the fruits and minerals, turning each sip that much darker. The black fruits also develop an even deeper pitch of black fruit goodness.

Attributes: Clear, dark ruby. Dry with medium-plus amounts of fine, chewy tannin. Little sediment already in bottle. Medium to medium-plus body with medium acidity (well integrated if higher). Great finish of at least 24+ seconds.

Thoughts: One of the things I really like about Bordeaux is how much more you get for what you pay for compared to other regions. Intoxicating depth of black fruit, savoriness and minerals. These should be even better with age, allowing for more integration. I won't be able to really speak on the development as this has already got a leg up with a little more than a year. Hope it just keeps getting better. One thing that worries me, is how the wine seemed to wither a bit around the 7 hour mark but maybe that's just hints of it closing down. 96+

Serving notes: Bordeaux glass. Served one glass and emptied bottle into a decanter at cellar temp ~55° and consumed over 7 hours. Recommend serving ~56°-60° with a decant of at least 2 hours at cellar temp if opening now.

I just wanted to try a young Bordeaux before I put the others in long-term storage. It took about 3 hours to open up and pretty good. I Can't wait to revisit this wine in a decade. In the meantime, I have a bottle of 2010 that I don't know if I should open for my birthday my other choices is 2001 Monte Bello or 2011 and 2012 Far Niente cave collection cab. Any suggestions?

Beautiful wine - but it really needed tons of air. Only at around six hours or so did it start to open up and reveal its tertiary old Bordeaux characteristics. Black currant, some red fruit, tobacco, leather and earth. The nose was surprisingly reticent but in the mouth it was a “wow” wine. On the table with 2004 Quilceda, and 2005 Hillside Select. It outclassed the competition but the other two were good. Not this good but good. At least the Lynch-Bages doesn’t have the no-environmental-sensibility of the SHS (which is a shameful bottle - I’ll never buy SHS again in light of their bottles. Well, that and unjustifiably weak QPR.)

Commanderie de Bordeaux - Minnesota - Bordeaux and Sushi (Billy Sushi): Double decanted for sediment and slo-O for about 7 hours. OK....2005 Bordeaux is aging at a snail's pace (and this one is a slowwwww snail!).

Nose was very primary with dark fruit, a hint of mint and smidge of tar.

Palate was extremely tight, showing dark fruit, oak, tar and hints of spice...the finish did show some cranberry and wooden notes. Definitely hold for at least 5 years (and likely much more). I think this will be a stellar wine when it finally comes around....hopefully, I will be around to enjoy it! No rating as it would be unfair to rate it today because it is so tightly wound (even with the long O)

Inky in color, with purple around the edges, the nose grabs you with its showy perfume of peppery black fruits, cassis, forest floor, mushroom, cedar, and cigar wrapper. Concentrated, full-bodied and mouth-filling, the wine hits every pocket of your palate. The ripe, soft, vibrant fruits come in layers. The berries are dark black and energetic. There is a touch of dust in the endnote with more of those juicy, sweet, seemingly never-ending black fruits. This hangs with the best vintages ever produced at Lynch Bages! 96-98 Pts

Upon uncorking the bottle, a symphony of aromas permeated the air, leaving me spellbound.

Yes, its probably 10 to early, but so what the intoxicating bouquet revealed notes of ripe blackberries, cassis, and cedar, intertwined with hints of truffles and dark chocolate. The initial whiff alone transported me to the rustic vineyards of Bordeaux, reminding me of a summer fling with a wine maiden and believe me from the first sip, my taste buds were immersed in that indescribable reminiscent luscious embrace of bold and velvety flavors reminding me of well, ....... the graceful finesse often found in French women.

The Château Lynch-Bages 2000 vintage reveals its full glory with each passing moment, gracefully evolving in the glass. The wine's structure and longevity are a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship employed in its creation. This remarkable vintage, possesses an intriguing depth that keeps you enthralled from the first sip to the last.

As I savored this exceptional wine, my mind wandered to the cobblestone streets of Paris and the vibrant vineyards of Bordeaux.

In conclusion, the 2000 vintage of Château Lynch-Bages is a true masterpiece that offers a sensory voyage through the vineyards of Bordeaux and an enchanting encounter with French femininity. Its rich flavors, captivating aromas, and velvety texture make it a delightful companion for those who appreciate the finer pleasures in life.

After 2 hours it opened like a French housemaid in spring and it held for hours. Super amazing deep intoxicating wine with a wet forest floor, ripe berries with a hint of tobacco that came out at 2 hours. Pad of deer foot and some ocean...Good now with finessing, but better probably in 2030 through 2040. Drink up!

Bought recently at auction, the fill was not great, but it beat expectations. It is a great example of a mature Bordeaux from one of the greatest vintages from the last century, but I do suspect that this does not have the structure for extended aging, and is overshadowed by the legendary 1989 and 1990. That said, it is magnificent. Displaying russet tones and an excellent viscosity, the nose is deeply aromatic with tertiary notes. Similarly the palate is fully integrated with silky notes of leather, and blackcurrant and plum with background hints of orange. It does drop off end palate and on the finish, where it is starting to show its age.

10th bottle from a case bought en primeur. Similar to the last bottle. Sandalwood, chocolate, leather and blackcurrant nose. Well balanced on the palate with plenty of beautifully soft fruit and tannins. Lynch Bages did particularly well in this average vintage. Drinking perfectly now and will decline slowly over a decade.
