A barely legal Barolo with a hint of brown on the rim. Perfume nose of bright cherries with a hint of flowers reminiscent of Sophia Loren wowing the room in Grumpier Old Men ;-). Even more Sophia on the palate with elegant, yet powerful, tannins and a lingering, luscious finish. We look forward to sipping our last bottle in ten years!

This is a polarising wine and I confess being a winemaker for my profession sees me marking this harshly. I really don't like brett but if you don't have a problem with it then this wine may still appeal to you. It's not completely stuffed and has a good deal of fruit underneath it but to me it's been affected too much. Having seen first hand the impact Brett has on wine it's hard to understand why many producers and consumers seem to be so oblivious to it? If you have the right equipment to deal with the issue in the winery you can reduce or avoid getting it altogether. I'm not advocating squeaky clean technically made wines either but Brett is NEVER doing anything good. I see many expensive wines on these pages with Brett issues getting praise heaped upon them (Thierry Allemand etc) and wonder how long it will take the general consumer to start to notice? I can understand as it's not something that easily recognised it's only through years of analysing wine that you begin to see it and then the damage that it does to your own wines. I was once dismissive about colleagues who were "Brettcentric" but there's no turning back after you've seen the light. Maybe ignorance is bliss.

Edit 11/13/2017: To back up my comments I will provide the laboratory analysis (costs around $80 per test) for 4EP:4EG levels present in this wine. These are the compounds which are responsible for the alteration of a wine's DNA when Brett affected. If the laboratory analysis indicates no presence of Brett I shall eat my words.

Edit 12/04/2017: Okay the results are in for this wine. The wine has been tested for presence of 4EP:4EG in the sample and tested by a NADA accredited laboratory which we use all the time to test our own wines. The sample was taken from a fresh bottle so bottle variation is not a factor in this.

4 Ethyl Phenol= 760ppm
4 Ethyl Guaiacol= 110ppm

This is a very high level given that threshold of detection is around 50ppm. The ratio between the two is about 7:1 (4EG:4EP). This is indisputably a bretty wine which backs up my original judgement and comments. To me the wine is impacted but if you like it then take these results with a grain of salt and keep enjoying wine irrespective of whether it's bretty or not. However you can't deny the presence of brett.

Cheers

Adam

Oh my bleh. This wine is good but no where near great. I bought half a case based on the reviews. Hopefully 5 years in the cellar will help but put me in the camp that does not think this is drinking above its price point by any means.
Nose is strong, slightly on on the sweet side. Red fruits galore. Palate is lean, tart and just plan a boring. I would serve this for dinner for non-wine geeks.

We were enjoying a Les Freres Marchand 20 Cheese Dinner at home with friends when we sipped this wine. Ruby red on the eye very inviting. Vibrant cherries and liquorice with hints of leather on the nose. Sweet, strong tannins with a stunning finish. WOTN. We are giddy as teenagers to have more than several bottles in the cellar as we think this barely legal, yet sophisticated lady, will only blossom into the belle of the ball in coming years...a possibility that simply excites all our senses!

Drank over two days, which were the second and third days that I drank the same vintage PdB Asili. This bottle helped confirm my impressions of the Asili.

Marginally more open bouquet than the Asili, although disappointingly short of what one might expect for a highly praised Montefico, with a listed abv of 15 (big alcohol enhancing a bouquet's loudness). Also, more expansive and gritty than the Asili. However, the back and finish revealed a green bite, similar to the Asili, which was partially masked by Montefico's more overt tannic presence. Recorked about 15 oz and hoped for a fuller bouquet and less bitterness.

The bouquet changed little on the second day. Montefico's strong tannic structure, however, came forward in a big way on this day. The green bitterness, somewhat typical of excessive pressing (not extraction), but more commonly, phenolic ripeness issues, with stems and pips less ripe than the fruit, was more pronounced.

Overall, this is bigger and bolder than the Asili, typical of terroir differences between the two crus. Both wines offered light to moderate bouquets, particularly underwhelming for such a highly touted vintage. This wine, while bracing on the second day, still showed greenness at the back and throughout the finish.

Was this Montefico locked down? Absolutely! Do locked down and green share any direct correlation in Piedmont Nebbiolo? Nope!

Ripe Nebbiolo tannins are bracing, gritty, some might argue, soul-destroying, but they are not green. This wine, and the Asili more so, show intense greenness at the back and throughout the finish. One of my favorite domestic producers, Bill Steele, owner of Cowhorn, who chewed stems around harvest time to verify full phenolic ripeness, once told me as we discussed greenness wrongly interpreted as locked down tannins in young, bold reds: 'Green is green, and green never integrates.' I agree!

I do not expect the greenness in this wine, nor the more overt greenness in the Asili, to fade.

Also noteworthy: I am currently tasting a still completely locked down 2010 Damilano Cannubi. It features a massive tannin wall, but not the slightest hint of greenness.

Tasted over three days.

First day, sampling from a Bordeaux stem, my preference for Barolo and Barbaresco. Light perfume, particularly for a highly-praised Asili from any producer, along with a pronounced alcohol jolt. The attack and middle are quite juicy, yet strikingly lean. The back turns astringent, with an ascorbic acid-like element (not ripe gritty tannins), which transitions to a disappointingly bitter and notably clipped finish.

On the second day, tasting from a Burgundy stem tamed the intrusive alcohol to a limited extent. Otherwise, no change from the first day.

Back to a Bordeaux stem for the last glass on the third day. Met with the same let down as the previous two days.

Overall, I found three notable detractions. The 15 abv is intrusive. It might have elevated the bouquet while in barrel, or a year or two back, but it does not at all now. The wine weakens from attack to finish, and with great wines, the opposite is true. The astringent element at the back is not ripe tannin; its is greenness. This may be the result of excessive pressing, but more likely has a basis in phenolic ripeness, the stems and pips less ripe than the berries.

Is there a chance this was an off bottle? Sure, there is a chance, but it is not likely. Nothing suggested this was an off bottle.

Is there a chance that this was completely locked down? Again, this is possible, but highly unlikely. Closed down wines might show obtrusive alcohol, but they do not feature thinness and bitterness at the back and throughout the finish.

This wine is not the equal of the same producer's 'Normale' label. The finest example of exceptional 2016 Barbaresco and Barolo that I have crossed paths with is Vietti's 'Castiglione' label. This Asili is nowhere close to that level of quality. 90-91.

I feel bad here, but this wine did absolutely nothing for me. Astringent on the nose and palette. Extremely tight and sharp. Some nice floral notes and a bit of cherry, but not much more. After a couple of hours of breathing, it had opened up marginally, but not much. The next day this was a tannin monster and difficult to drink. I would give this way lower than 86 based on this experience, but I'm sure that with (a lot of) time this can develop into something decent. Avoid this for now.
EDIT: I've marked this as "flawed" now, based on some of the comments and retrospective thoughts. Even if not flawed, it appears to have shutdown considerably and, in my opinion (!), should be left to develop a good while.

What am I missing? I did not enjoy this. Medium bodied, but very light and thin in the mouth. Tart. Tannins are surprisingly light, but mouth drying. No fruit comes through. Tried it after opening, after airing out in the glass for a few hours, and 24+ hours later. No improvement. I have 2 more bottles, which I regret. The only positive thing is that I found this at Costco for USD$50. Maybe something magical will happen 5 years from now? Or am I just finding that this is so far from my style as I learn Barolo? This is just miles away from the 2019 Azienda Virna Di Borgogno Barolo Cannubi I had recently. I'd love to understand why I liked this bottle so much less, so that I can stop making this mistake in the future

Thoroughly modern Millie, but that's no reason not to like it. Nose full of cocoa, coffee, and ripe plummy fruit: almost like a Piedmontese merlot. Licorice, dark red fruits, tar, and good grippy tannins in the mouth. Very forward and inviting. If you enjoy this style of Barolo it's a great example. For me, I appreciate it but it's a little too eager to please, like an overanxious puppy. Good news is you can call it a puppy at age 7. There are plenty of dog years ahead.

Edit: please see the comment submitted by dbp. I am apparently dead wrong about this being a modern Barolo-the family follows very traditional practices. It clearly hit my palate in an intensely sweet and oak-inflected way that isn't explainable through what is said publicly about the way the wines are made, so I recommend you read other reviews for a more "balanced" perspective.

Incredibly youthful, you can't believe the label says 1955. And the dark color confuses you even more. Bright fruit on the red/dark red side of things, tons of soil character, floral notes, bright acidity, and an epically long finish. I don't usually go for wines this old, but this was truly an enjoyable bottle and worth the tariff if you can find it.

One year since my last time with this wine. It is maturing but in a way that is taking it a step backwards. Not as vivid and compelling as it was one and three and five years ago. Good depth, but acidity and tannin that seems to shut it down a bit. Not sure what to make of it but it does not make me think less of the wine - just will continue to follow it and see where the journey takes me. DAY TWO: Well, isn’t this interesting. The aromatics are incredible at 16 hours open - can smell it from several steps away. Very bright and spicy, with the pie cherry sharpness that was not there yesterday. Mouth feel just as smooth, much more flavor in the mouth of Asian spices and tart cherry with an undertone of used oak barrels. Long finish. Very nice. Merits a higher score but I won’t change it as I wanted to capture the wine on opening.

Apologies to Anthony Burgess. The Bishop having been rather pre-occupied this Easter week, I found myself languidly pleasuring myself and then thoughts turned to more substantial needs - Barolo was the answer.

On day 1 this rather jaunty fellow was showing ripe fruit, almost porty, but held in check by some refreshing acid bodice and the usual rather plentiful tannins. Like another reviewer I have often felt sure that there are oak elements at play in both the nose and texture, but read anything about this maker and it will say that is one thing you won't find them engaging in. I think what you have is some very sophisticated and detailed wine making that produces ripe and very textured wine without needing to revert to oak for cheap tricks.

I have a difficult relationship with these wines. I find that I love them one moment then I long for a slightly hard edged Neb experience.

On day 2 I think this shows much more pure Neb character. There's a little more Thyme, a hint of tar but still the very pure fruit. the tannins are fine and don't kick in until after you swallow and they are wonderful with food. The length and intensity are exemplary. You could score this higher but I am tight with my 'Outstanding' ratings.

I think this is a good intro to Barolo for the neophyte and perhaps it is also a good wine for the more travelled palate. For those in between, like me it might be more tricky. The fault is in the drinker not the wine. I am put in mind of Gordon Lightfoot's wonderful 'The Watcher' - interesting that Bob Dylan rates Gordon so highly he travelled to Canada to induct him into their heroes of Canadian something or other. Maybe the same applies to Aldo Conterno's wines. And at the end of it all, Barolo remains the answer to my introduction.

{Grandi Langhe, 2017} Wow, such an impressive wine. In the past, I've gravitated toward Le Coste as my favorite of their (two) Barolo wines, but it's becoming harder to choose a favorite, as the quality of their Barolo offerings just continues to get better, their touch is light, yet the result, substantive. An elegant wine that will need several years in the cellar before it's truly ready to face the world, and even then, it'll just be getting going. There are now 3 Barolo offerings: San Giuseppe, Le Coste and Bussia, and I'm an enthusiastic buyer of each one. highly recommended

light color, almost on pink-ish side. orange zest and granny apple on the nose. very sweet. Is barolo supposed to be this sweet? Bit green initially with PnP, that gradually dissipated with aeration. decent finish, but that initial sweetness really takes away the enjoyment. Tannins are rough but this wine doesn't have acid backbone to carry for years.

Aromas of leather, crushed dried roses, macerated red cherries, and alcohol peek through an otherwise muted nose, signaling a reticent Barolo that is wondering who in God’s name set the alarm clock ten years too early?! Tight on the palate, with some sleep inertia reluctantly keeping the flavors from expanding. Sandalwood, plum, tobacco, leather, and bitter spice hop-scotch across the palate, skipping most of the mid-palate, and clenching up on a tart and slightly warm finish.

Oxygen is the hot cup of coffee this wine needs to rouse its spirits. Initially with a cantankerous 4-year-old “I don’t wannnnnnaaa get up for breakfast” protest, depth and complexity slowly, begrudgingly, make their appearances from under the covers. Fuzzy cedar-inflected tannins become more refined with air. Sherry-drenched cherries and unsmoked cigar make for an old-world charm, coupled with leather and river rock notes.

And just when you think it is about to give up the goods and unfold into a wave of flavor-generosity, it… doesn’t. So, that’s about as far as it gets, which is perhaps further than I had anticipated. Sure, it needs a decade or two to get to work and promote to VP of grandeur, but it’s a prodigy primed for splendor down the road. A very eligible bachelor type of wine that checks the boxes. Mom would be proud.

Hold until 2035. Or, just pony-up son and open it now with a super fat decant and enjoy it for some of its already-supercool suave James Bond posing (think Sean Connery in Dr. No, with his signature Walther PPK in one hand and a martini in the other… and Sylvia Trench in the other)…. Will he be able to stop the radio beam weapon from destroying mankind…?!

Palate just seemed like old cherry fruit to me. Maybe there was a hint of leather? But if there, it wasn't much. I guessed Sangiovese but was not surprised it was a Nebbiolo.

Impulse Purchase @ Costco. 14.5% abv - $25

I don't believe I've ever tried a Nebbiolo wine so got this to accompany stuffed bell peppers purchased for dinner. I had been intrigued with Nebbiolo since reading the Barbera varietal (which I like) was considered inferior to Nebbiolo; with some regions devoting their better locations to Nebbiolo, relegating Barbera to lesser terrain.

Clear, sort of brownish garnet in the Glass. Initially Rose aroma on the nose along with hints of cherry & cocoa. Just a hint of sweetness on the palate, combined with spice, licorice and tart acidity. Light bodied (like a Pinot Noir) with prominent tannins leaving a fuzzy-tooth feel. Lingering, astringent finish. A little different palate and mouth feel than say, a Barbera. Aromatic & spicy, but neither I nor spouse found particularly 'savory;' At least not yet! Perhaps we just got a bad bottle, but tasters like 'Fractalage' know their stuff; when they believe the wine is too young suggesting several years more cellaring, I'll defer to them. Meanwhile, I'll just have to wait, and wonder; Where is the smoothness, the flavor, the roundness, until I get a chance to try Nebbiolo again?

Dark in color, surprisingly so for Nebbiolo. Heady bouquet of naturally ripened fruits and berries, along with orange zest, muddled flower petals, potpourri, spices, and minerals. Strikingly dense attack, in every good way, featuring superb satin texture. The middle graces every part of the palate before profound tannins clamp down at the back. The gritty finish evokes the color crimson for a long, lingering while. The highest quality Barbaresco from the vintage that I recall tasting, and, the same producer's cru bottlings excepted, better than any 2011 too.

Why did Produttori del Barbaresco declassify their cru fruit in 2012? Who knows!? Thankfully, we have the distinct pleasure of benefitting from it. Likely to last for another two decades. 94-95.

Post Script:

I know the reasons given for declassifying the crus in this vintage, and in 2010, decisions for which I am deeply grateful. And, of course, I hope that Produttori declassifies forthcoming vintages. This aside, I have a few thoughts as to these declassifications.

I have tasted several underwhelming crus in recent vintages, one or two even nondescript. The somewhat angular 2008 Muncagota and Pora bottlings, for example, leave much to be desired, whereas the same vintage Montestefano shows like a Tuscan Sangiovese-Merlot blend. In 2009, the Pora came off as fairly straightforward (simple), and the Ovello showed like high quality Barbera, or slightly wonky Barolo. It seems that a house that boasts as many crus, and sources as much fruit from them, as PdB does, and that does not hesitate to declassify, would want to avoid producing cru bottlings like these.

Also, it seems that PdB declassified in the more moderate climate vintages and bottled the crus in hotter vintages, which might be interpreted as a marketing ploy for New World consumers, as hotter vintages typically show more fruit.

Again, only speculations, and certainly not complaints, as the 2010 and 2012 vintages rank very high in quality at very affordable prices.

Opened to breathe for 1-3h, sampling continuously throughout. This has a nice aromatic nose of spicy red berries and tar. The palate shines bright with bright red berry fruit, tar, cedar bark, hints of sweetness, and quite a hit of chewy tannins before the acid finish. Unmistakably a very young, well made Nebbiolo in its character development phase. Delicious with my grilled salmon, somewhat less exciting on its own as a meditation wine because of its rough edges and obtrusive tannins. I've tried a half dozen '15's this summer, and while this is a good showing, it displays less unique personality than several other Barbaresco's from this vintage at a similar price point. 91-92
