2008 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses

Gorgeous young Burgundy. The intense nose shows tart red fruits, dusty minerals, and earth. The palate is very acidic but the concentrated fruit keeps the balance intact. In fact, the fruit, acidity, minerality, and dried herb qualities are all so intense and focused that this is almost too much on the first sip. It mellows some with air but also closes up a bit. Loads of potential in this one.

Nice wine. A bit surly and structured out of the gate, but with a couple hours in the decanter this softens into a deep, reasonably complex burg with intense, spicy Pinot fruit. The fruit is quite dense and crunchy, showing the old vines character. This is on the darker and more brooding end of the spectrum, with substantial structure, and I suspect it won't hit its apex until at least a decade from now.

This is a domaine wine and it's an absolute beauty. Rather than the rusticity one sometimes finds with Jadot, this shows pure, floral Pinot fruit that's very '17--open, pretty, seductive, if not all that grand. Ridiculously brilliant QPR for the $30 this cost me. I struggle to think of a better wine for the price.

Consistent with my prior note, this is a highly satisfying wine. It's still pretty open and lithe, with slinky red fruits, a dusting of spice, and fine tannins. Very good now and it will age. Silly value for the very reasonable price.

This has a nice nose and is moderately more open than the Ile de Vergelesses, with old-vine concentration and pure fruit. Still fairly one-dimensional with angular tannins, but this should be lovely one day.

This comes from ancient vines and is a pet favorite wine of mine. It’s still so young but quite tasty. Takes a couple hours in the decanter to show much of anything. But as it unfurls the nose is really very lovely and the palate is bright and mineral but on the lean side. It slowly deepens with air. Four hours in, the last sip was the best.

Light ruby in color, this was a nice, typical, straightforward Burgundy. Medium-bodied and charming, but a bit hard at this point and shut down. Not much aromatically, and a bit tannic, but this opened up to be quite nice by the end of dinner.

Off the charts good, especially considering this is a villages. Everything one could want from a young Volnay AOC. Soaring red-berry nose introduces an elegant palate of crunchy red berries and serious minerals. Although has some jagged edges from the tannins, acids, and minerals, the texture is so open knit and airy, and the fruit is so pure, intense, and concentrated, that the sharp bits serve only to make the wine more interesting. Not terribly complex, but everything is absolutely in the right place. One of the best villages burgs in recent memory. I'm already searching for more.

I've gone through several bottles of this and they've all been superb. This has crunchy, bright, angular red fruits with a serious mineral spine. The balance is impeccable and so is the concentration, particularly given that the overall package is pretty lightweight. Room for improvement.

My prior note was based on a taste that, apparently, was deceiving. This bottle, while fresh and crunchy, was "bad natural." Mousy and a bit carbonic without any of the finesse and purity I seek out in Volnay. Ugh.

Absolutely spectacular villages and my score may be conservative. Classical Volnay with impeccable proportions, but with a concentration and intensity beyond its villages level. Very 2016, and by that I mean concentrated but restrained and Burgundian.

Lafarge's '18s show the perfect marriage of producer to vintage. This has Lafarge's classic soulful, muscular, somewhat-angular style but with the added oomph of opulent, perfectly ripe fruit that gives this the depth, weight, and presence of a pedigreed 1er. Young but expressive and absolutely everything I look for in a Burgundy villages. Try one before it shuts down.

I've now had this a number of times and every single time it's been really superb. I don't think anyone did better in '18 than Lafarge, and this wine is a real gem. Deep and dark but with lovely balance.

Unsurprisingly, this is beautiful. Fragrant even in its youth, this is deep and floral and really quite pure. Bigger fruit than a lot of Lafarge, but that's '19. Crowd-pleaser and plenty serious for the geek set. Room to improve and I'm confident it will.

Not great, but it's oh so good. This shows an alluring crushed raspberry nose, bright fruit, sexy texture, and impeccable balance. This is on the light side of medium bodied and is an adolescent--just showing hints of suave maturity, but still with some unruly (but enticing) angles. This is quite simple, and to a gobs-of-fruit lover might be a little thin, but to me it's beautiful villages. High drinkability factor, and a perfect restaurant Burgundy. Drinking quite well now, this should improve for another few years. I'm sure this will give pleasure for at least another decade and probably more.

Highly enjoyable. Tight upon opening, but with a couple hours of air this blossoms. Expressive, pure nose and a palate that, while still structures, showcases layers of concentrated fruit, spice, and a hint of beetroot in a well-balanced package. Still young but the tannins are fine. This has ample room to improve and I’ll keep my other bottles for at least another 5 years

Odd wine. This has an intense, expressive Pinot nose that, while a bit muddled, has nice fruit and is proper Volnay 1er. But the palate is weak on the attack, and the midpalate is sort of hollow. Not bad, per se, but not much there either. Not worth the price or the hassle -- but I suppose tasty enough.

Unlike many '96s, this is a wine of great harmony. Still reasonably young and structured, this shows elegant brambly fruit, minerals, and subtle tertiary elements. Very pure and detailed on the nose and palate, superbly balanced, and none of the '96 hard edges. Texture is silky, with fine tannins still in the background. This is just emerging into its drinking window but has not peaked. It has a long and lovely future ahead.

Very good but this takes a lot of air to get there. Initially this shows the bad side of '96: it was quite acidic and angular, without the fruit to round it out. But with hours of time, the acids died down and this became a red-fruited, velvet-textured beauty with layers of emerging tertiary deliciousness. The last sip, at hour 5, was the best one. This certainly is showing mature elements, but I still think this is probably 3-5 years from apogee.

Disappointing. While the fruit is concentrated, the oak overpowers it and the overall impression is pretty disjointed. I've touted Pousse as a good value, but this wasn't a good one. Maybe a bad bottle; or alternatively, the last 5 years have not been kind to this.
