9/6/2014 - ucbeau wrote: NRFrom magnum. Very leesy and a huge amount of bubbles when first opened. I am not sure if I like this wine or not. At first, the lees characteristics were interesting and worked with some tart citrus, but as it saw air, an odd, unpleasant rubber note came out. Seems like the wine has a sulfide issue which got progressively worse. The group was split on it too, some felt it was too rich and others felt it smelled bad. Disappointing. |

12/13/2013 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRTook about three hours to open up but once it did, we thoroughly enjoyed this Burg. For only $25, it shows tremendous value. Lots of complex red and black fruit on the nose, along with hints of oak, baking spice, and cola. Nicely dense and concentrated on the palate, with plenty of tannin and acidity to contrast with the ripe berry and plum flavors. A spicy, complex finish was a touch short but otherwise delicious. |

6/23/2017 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRSmoky/savory at first, some fruit in a tightly wound core. Showing a nice dose of brettanomyces but this one was the good kind, more savory/meaty than band-aid. Easy to drink and complex enough to keep us coming back for more. |

6/23/2017 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NROpened and poured. Drinking beautifully right now. Yes there's definitely some brett in the wine, adding a smoky, campfire, and horse stall element. The fruit is underneath that, a dense, deep core of black cherry and hints of raspberry. Good acidity, softer tannins. Very enjoyable. |

10/18/2014 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRChilled then popped and poured. Beautiful pale red color. Lots of bubbles. Super refreshing on the palate, with tart red berry fruit and a subtle minerally tone. Lots of acidity, which made me happy. A great QPR bubbly. |

5/14/2013 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured. Notes of hazelnut, cherry, cranberry, river rock, and balsamic appear with some swirling. Lots of ripe fruit on the palate, tempered by nicely integrated acidity. A bit of a fizzy sensation lifts the red fruit flavors. The finish is lively, with a brief wisp of chocolate cake frosting before it ends with grape stem and red cherry flavors. Absolutely delightful wine. Nicely balanced. |

8/29/2013 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRStill just a baby. This needs a serious decant if you're going to drink it anytime soon. Once it unwinds, you get gorgeous aromas of cassis, black cherry, dusty dried herb, and also a minerally dust that's incredible. On the palate it's got plenty of tannin and acidity, helping frame the ripe flavors of plum, blackberry, and blueberry. Secondary flavors of black tea, baking chocolate, and subtle eucalyptus all balance each other out. A gorgeous wine that will only get better with age. |

7/13/2013 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRGorgeous stone fruit and mineral tones. Still showed some acidity but it had softened noticeably. A bit of sulfur on the nose initially, which blew off. All in all, an excellent wine. |

3/22/2013 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRI liked this wine, it was full of acidity but stuffed with aromas of citrus and stone fruit. That acidity, strong as it was, helped check the ripeness and body of the wine, creating a superb balance. Lots of typical white Burgundy minerality present too. The finish was clean and persistent, surprisingly lengthy for such a value wine. |

10/29/2016 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured (a mistake), but wow was this great. Lively red fruit, integrated tannins, pinpoint balance..With just the beginnings of some tertiary development. Both aroma and mouthfeel were excellent. Super clean nose. Wish I'd bought more. |

9/20/2013 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRWalks a fine line between bigger, heartier grenache and something with elegance and finesse. Lots of fruit and pepper on the nose at first, which then opens up to show more high toned red aromas. Raspberry and blackberries showed up for me. On the palate it's spicy and full of sweet red berry flavors, but that is countered by great acidity. Overall a really, really good bottle of wine worth every penny. |

9/18/2013 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRYoung and delightfully fresh, but it has the chops to age for a long time. Citrus and crisp green apples are everywhere. Also hints of white flower and that crazy Chablis minerality. Would benefit from a decant if you plan to drink within the next five years. |

10/26/2012 - ucbeau wrote: NRAmazing freshness. The nose reminded me of crushed black peppercorns, with their earthy spice, and fresh red cherries all sitting next to a bowl of sun-dried tomatoes. There was also a subtle smokey, leathery aroma weaving in and out of the cherries. Despite being almost 40 years old, the acidity was still present and alive. More fresh red berries, earth, and peppery spice came through on the palate, exhibiting wonderful balance and depth. The finish lasted a full minute, going on and on in a procession of flavors as the integrated tannins gently would things down. One of the best Riojas I've ever tasted. |

8/15/2014 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRRipe, rich nose of red plum and strawberries. Segues into some spicy oak and a hint of pie crust. Excellent acidity and integration but it's still a baby. Firm tannins give structure for days, restraining the exuberant, concentrated fruit. There's a baking spice and red cherries finish that I adore. Surprisingly accessible now, this still does need 5-7 more years before it starts to approach peak. |

9/16/2013 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRSmokey, spicy, dark fruit. Good acidity and good balance. The wine doesn't try to be anything it isn't. Worthy of a six-pack buy. Medium term ageability. |

5/26/2013 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRThis was a groovy wine. A bit of sulfide shows on the nose but that's just another interesting element. Bright, lively red fruit flavors and a bit of stemmy herbaceousness show a fun wine. |

7/5/2013 - ucbeau wrote: NRChilled for about 45 minutes before opening. Popped and poured. Gorgeous aromas of citrus, pear, and spicy green apples which segued into some wood and spice notes. On the palate it's rich but with ample acidity. Excellent balance. The finish is drawn out nicely, with a clean taper of citrus and stone fruit. Very well made wine. Ageworthy. |

4/20/2014 - ucbeau Does not like this wine: NRI just couldn't get into this Champagne. It was oxidized, showing lots of bruised apple that seemed on its way to rotten apple. Under that, I think there was some compelling stuff but I do not like oxidative styles, preferring leaner, minerally examples. |

10/31/2014 - ucbeau wrote: NRI'm not sure what to think about this wine. I pulled the cork and it was really funky on the nose, sort of like rubber bicycle tire or something. Underneath that though were gorgeous red fruit notes. That funk seemed to come and go as I tasted this over the course of about three hours. When it wasn't there, the tart raspberry/strawberry and pepper notes were awesome and so juicy, yet restrained too. When there was too much of that rubber tire weighing down the wine, it was hard to drink. An interesting experience to be sure. |

4/25/2014 - ucbeau wrote: NRPopped and poured. Tasted over the course of about 2 hours. Initially was quite closed, showing sulfides, tart red fruit, barrel notes, and orange rind. Tasted a lot better than it smelled. On the palate, summer strawberry, black pepper, forest floor, and a little black cherry. Good tannins and very nice acidity. Tough to get past the nose, but it's definitely drinkable pinot and the palate may improve with a little time. |

2/21/2017 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NROpened approximately 2 hours prior to serving. Pours a dark ruby. On the nose there is peppery spice, cola, dark cherry and raspberry, along with hints of wood and smoke. Everything is nicely balanced. Softer than expected on the attack, the acidity comes in later across the palate. Tart strawberry and black cherry, peppery spice, dried oak, and dusty forest floor notes all work together. While not the most complex wine, this is very satisfying, ticking off all the boxes for flavor, varietal typicity, vintage accuracy, and seems to also be drinking with more youth than expected. Goes really nicely with food too. |

7/14/2014 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NRChilled for an hour, then poured. Delicious, very correct chardonnay. The nose is full of golden apple, tropical fruit, butter, and a touch of green. Great acidity on the palate balances out the creaminess. Not as much of a minerally component as I'd expected but it was still there. Drinking well above its $13 price point. |
