The nose is all about ripe black fruit, spice, herb, and - a touch of coffee! On the palate this is so smooth and balanced, it wants you to take another sip, especially when paired with food (ok, not a Tomahawk ribeye but a Papa Murphy's thin crust pizza - yum). There is a bit of oak and tannins on the finish, so could have waited. Ben's wines are so good when aged. This bottle was exceptional tonight. |

I usually get a very defined adjective / noun word block I use on a fresh Ciel, roses, unsweetened baking chocolate, violets etc. Not here. This was all about its seamless structure and balance, not a fault line to be detected all the way to the finish which does yield a little kiss of cassis and some flowery suggestions. Impossible not to think of Bordeaux, but while contemplating if this would be a good ringer in a blind flight, no, this is classic WA, and for that matter, classic Ciel de Cheval. The Swan Song vintage for Cadence from this vineyard, it will be missed. |

This was my third and final bottle of a three pack, and confirms without a doubt, that Cadence wines need at least 5 years of sideways time to really shine. Clearly this wine is in a Prime Time drinking window, fantastic multifaceted nose of roses and violets, Indian spices and chocolate. My last TN from two years ago noted a stalky taste on the palate, probably (from the cab franc) – this bottle was all dark plums and spice, like the nose very floral, and great back bone of Red Mountain tannins that are perfectly integrated. Rich, but surprisingly light on its feet. Should hold for another 5 years, perhaps more, but absolutely no reason not to enjoy this gem today. |
