An Affair to Remember: 1851-1994 (Sammamish, Washington): My oh my. This is a legendary bottle that I never thought I would get to try in my lifetime. We have a regular segment in our For The Love Of Port newsletter where interview personalities from the Port trade. One the standard questions we usually ask in our interviews is “What is the one Vintage Port you wish you could try, but never have.” I would (unscientifically) venture to say that 80% say “The 1931 Noval Nacional.” My friend Roy Hersh helped to secure this bottle for an epic “bucket list” tasting, and the buyer paid $10,000 for the bottle. Despite seemingly good provenance, when we used Port tongs to open it, the kitchen immediately started to smell like wet cardboard. It was a corked bottle, and undrinkable. We were obviously extremely disappointed, but the buyer didn’t seem to be too worked up about it. Unbeknownst to use, he had discovered another bottle of the 1931 Noval Nacional and had flown to the Bahamas to pick it up from the famous Graycliff Restaurant. The bottle was pulled from a bag, places on the counter, and our roller-coaster of emotions went from sadness to jubilation! The wine was light amber in color as it was decanted, and we breathed a sigh of relief when we smelled some wonderful aromatics wafting up from the decanter. After carefully pouring everyone a glass, we sat down to taste and write our notes. There was a little spirit on the nose, with a touch of red fruits and even some light floral notes. On taking the first sip, there was an intense flavor of bight cherry and red fruit, with some crazy complexity of swirling espresso bean, dark fruit, brown sugar, and some black cherry. The immense, evolving mid-palate was smooth and balanced. The finish was incredibly long, with the flavors, acidity and residual tannins dancing playfully seemingly minutes after I’d swallowed. This was likely a one-in-a-lifetime bottle for me, and while it might be tempting to rate this wine higher because of the experience, the wine in the glass before me earned this perfect score all on its own.

2022 Port Harvest Tour; 9/22/2022-10/2/2022 (Porto, Portugal): This is an unfiltered cask sample, bottled this morning. The aromatics on this wine are turned up to "11" - waves of rich and complex aromas of root beer, molasses, dark chocolate, dried figs, and salted caramel. The stunning entry is amazingly smooth and balanced, and the palate has rich molasses, butterscotch, and espresso bean. With beautiful body weight and a long, sublime finish, the richness and intensity runs from stem to stern of this wine. There is not much more I could ask for in a Colheita Port from this era.

An Affair to Remember: 1851-1994 (Sammamish, Washington): Deep purple in color with almost complete opacity. There is cocoa powder and still some primary fruit on this beast. Extremely intense, primary black fruit on the palate. Amazing intensity. Unbelievable longevity for this wine. Balance is so perfect on this wine, and the finish just keeps on going with wave after wave of fruit and tannins. This wine is drinking like a young VP right now, but the incredible structure underneath means this wine is going to be an even bigger rock star down the road than it is tonight. This was a stunning wine.

2021 FTLOP Harvest Tour; 9/19/2021-10/2/2021 (Portgugal): This blend includes wines from 1880, 1900, 1910 and finally 1927 (in honor of the birth year of Miguel’s father, Mario Braga, who founded Quinta do Mourão). The wine is dark amber-brown in color with a tinge of gold and green on the edges. There is off-the-charts complexity on the nose with wave after wave of torrefacted sugars, herbs, grilled pineapple, and some dark mahogany. The palate matches the complexity, with a rich, viscous mouthfeel highlighted by sweet notes of toasted marshmallow, toffee, and a fresh, lively acidity. The finish is extremely long and harmonious, with the beautiful acidity and complexity lingering for minutes after each swallow.

2021 FTLOP Harvest Tour; 9/19/2021-10/2/2021 (Portgugal): Cask #3 Sample. Dark brown in color with yellow on the edges. Mahogany and expressive notes of espresso, chocolate and vinegrenio. The incredibly rich mouthfeel seems to pick up viscosity on the mid-palate and evolve into a complex mélange of rich, flavors and textures. I picked up rich toffee, torrefacted brown sugars, and some simply amazing intensity. Great balance of acidity and sweetness. Wow. This is an amazing cask sample. Like drinking honeyed molasses with a shot of espresso. This cask is the is the Muito Muito Velha (Very Very Old) Port with over 100 years of age. These are often used to blend into other wines.

An Affair to Remember: 1851-1994 (Sammamish, Washington): This was one of the great three vintages in the 1800s. This bottle was bought at auction forty years ago. Medium red core with bricking on the edges. There was initially some light spearmint and a touch of clove on the nose, but with some air I picked up some floral notes. Bright fruit and strawberries on the medium-bodied palate. This is an expressive, beautiful wine, and while I would not go so far to call it elegant in style, it exudes an amazing sophistication for such an old wine. Excellent acidity and a medium-long finish.

2022 Port Harvest Tour; 9/22/2022-10/2/2022 (Porto, Portugal): Cask sample. This is a 142 Year Old Tawny Port. It is brown-orange in color with yellow and green on the edges. The viscousness of this Port in the glass is insanely thick and coats the inside of the glass with a brown-yellow sheen that holds for what seems like minutes. You can smell the age on this wine - old leather, antique furniture, and deep dark chocolate. The entry is a cacophony of complex flavors - lime, Werther's candy, torrefacted sugars, maple and molasses. This wine is strikingly smooth on the palate. It is deep and rich, but everything seems to have integrated here perfectly. This is a 142 year old glass of perfection. It is so approachable and pleasurable in the mouth with richness, great balance, and incredible acidity.

It is so thick and viscous that it leaves a yellow coating on the glass when swirled. Intense chocolate and dark mahogany varnish notes. Syrup-like body with crazy complexity of milk chocolate, toffee, espresso, vinagrinho (little vinegar), toasted nuts and burnt sugar. The finish goes on forever and the color remains in the glass. Wow. Just wow.

2021 FTLOP Harvest Tour; 9/19/2021-10/2/2021 (Portgugal): This is a blend of wines from 1895 and 1927, which we usually call the “old” blend of this wine. The “new” blend comes from three different vintages, which (if I recall correctly, came from 1890, 1905, and 1927). Dark brown in color with noticeable viscosity when I swirled the wine in my glass. On the nose, I noted salted caramel, lime, expressive cedar, and dark rich espresso. Extremely full-bodied with an intensity and laser-focused acidity that was really something special. Nevertheless, the wine was exceptionally balanced, with the acidity and syrupy sweetness playing very nicely against each other. The finish on this wine went on for minutes, with waves of complex flavors. 99 points.

It is like pouring motor oil into your glass. It is the color of dark molasses with slight yellowing on the edges. The nose is dominated by vinegrenio, pickle brine, saline, citrus, and maple. On the palate, there is amazing intensity with lime, lemon, caramel, soy sauce, and that crazy viscosity. The exceptionally long finish has bright acidity, rich texture, and incredible complexity. 2013 Port Harvest Tour; 9/27/2013-10/6/2013 (Porto, Portugal): Garrafão 7 - While touring the dusty old cellars at Casa Santa Eufemia, I spotted this bottle sitting on top of a glass demijohn bottle. It seemed clear that it was a sample bottle of the wine in the larger demijohn below it. I pointed this bottle out to Roy, whose eyes lit up when he saw it. Our host explained that the wine is an old wine that is used for blending into other wines to improve the quality. No paperwork survived to tell us exactly what age this wine is, but they let Roy taste a small sample right there in the cellar, and said that if he approved, we could all try it later at dinner. Roy took one sip and the expression on his face was disbelief. He paused for a very long time, then said out loud that he thought it was on par with the 1863 and the two 1896s from Krohn. When we got to try it later that evening and I wrote the following notes: The color is a dark, dark amber. As you swirl it, it has color like a dark, PX sherry. It has clearly been in demi-john for a very long time. Cola syrup and molasses on the nose. The acidity on this wine is razor sharp. It is like the acidity of a Sercial Maderia without all the dryness. There isn't any detectable Douro bake at all on this wine, even though it has been stored in the Baixo Corga. The winemaker said "I use just 1% of this old wine in a 20 Year Old Tawny blend and it makes it a completely different wine."
