Where does one begin to describe this and even more how does one rate it. Dark in colour and shines through the early century whiter than normal bottle with all the hand made flaws ( the bottle is itself a story) . Rich but with impressive acidity, rich apricot, honey. An exceptional experience and albeit one can argue about the wine the experience and the emotion it invokes can only be described as perfect. 100

A gift of a dinner for Joao's 40th (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): From half bottle. Where does one begin to discuss this wine... Frankly we discuss a lot over this and there was nowhere we could find a fault with it. The acidity is there, the energy, the ripe rich fruit, honey, light caramel beginning to emerge. Granted there is some stargazing when one drinks this wine and probably a feeling of "is that all" but really its just an effortless display of elegance. Nothing too much nothing too little. A perfect tune and a perfect wine. 100

Testament to the greatness and perfection of this wine that it was served next to the 90 Chave ( Papies 97) and outclassed it in the game of thrones.
A mesmerising nose smoky, meaty soft spice and light dark fruit. The palate follows on the same tune, savoury and with so much depth and continued to evolve and enchant us throughout. Frankly we could go on and on here but this is nothing short of Perfect shone in the company of other perfect and near perfect wines. 100 full stop.

Quite a bit of evolution on the colour but still firm dark red. On the nose it is a symphony , a wine to medicate over, smoky, roast meet, light spice, dark fruits. All in balance and so expressive. The palate carries on the same tune , full of elegance, silky character and with a vibrant core of fruit. An amazing wine and a worthy 100. Would drink now albeit it has life in it.

Extra kudos to this wine as it impressed so much even after following the excellent 1983 Cheval Blanc (Papies 98)

This time From the unique and special cellar of La Tour D'Argent, Paris , in what was their last bottle.
Followed in the wake of a lot of near perfect wines ( including he perfect 1989 La Turque and 1990 La Mouline - Papies 99 ) and La Reine des vins claimed her throne once again. The nose ,albeit with no decanting , was just an utter symphony of beutiy. Smoky, soft spice, soft dark fruit. Elegance personified on the palate, good richness of fruit, impressive depth of flavour and persistence . A masterclass of a wine that for us ranks always supreme even among its sisters. 100 punto.

But this is something truly exceptional. Better still followed in the wake of the excellent (but soft) Masumi Yumedono Junmai Daiginjo and shown even above this with a firmer, brighter palate and a lot more energy while sacrificing none of the aromatics or elegance that something as truly great has to offer. 100

We actually thought it was a younger than 1990 .
The hall marks of a La La from Guigal are there , smoky , roars meat , spice , night fruit and all wrapped up in this effortless balance these wines deliver with good age. Magnificent as always and a wine we have rated 99 twice before ( 2017 & 2021) finally joins its other siblings at the perfect score room. Exceptional and with a lot of life ahead.

Especially following a more exuberant and attention speaking 1988 La Turque ( Papies 99) just showed why this wine is in another league. Elegant, effortlessly balanced and does not shout or scream. Just delivers with no need to over exert or over reach. Just elegantly softly delivers a savoury, roast meat, soft spice and herbs symphony of classical mastery. We have been ever so fortunate to try this wine 3 times before over the last decade or so and the wine has always been perfect ( 2x 100 and one 98) or near there. Exceptional once again just shy of the perfect score ( we debated this very much) but really numbers mean very little at this stage. 99

We guessed mid 2000s Napa Syrah and although went back n forth if this was Alban/SQN/Saxum the delicate side of it made us choose SQN. We guessed this was a non EBA though..
SQNs can be a hit or a miss but in cases like this it's a clear hit. It had what we usually like in SQNs an elevated balance, everything is amplified but unlike lessens Napa cousins everything here is elevated and thus in tune which makes the wine elegant in its OTT. Very good density of fruit, nice acidity, well assimilated oak ( had 38 month of it too...) and just in perfect harmony. The wine is big but not heavy and the nose of it is a mesmerising experience. There was no doubt what this was nor how exceptional of a wine this was. We actually said thank you to our friend that offered it ahead of even posting our guess. We went with Lynch Bages 1990 as we did feel some of the austerity of Pauillac.
The wine is simply stunning , soft, almost feminine but with a lot of presence and this has another 20 years to go but ever so subtle and magnificent . Pointless to rumble on. 99

Interestingly a few weeks ago when crossing paths with the magical 1990 Margaux ( Papies 99) we made the comment that that was the ballerina in the Chinese theatre’s production on Swan lake where the ever stoic ballerina just mesmerises all while balancing on the guy’s shoulders. We worried about it given the 1996 Margaux was a bit showing too much age last time we had it ( Papies 95-96) but oh no… This was still one might argue ( and we all agreed) on the developing side of its life. The fruit is ever so alive and firm, evolved of course but showing no signs of letting go. Same with the nose which it felt just about turning the real secondary chapter with still rich ( for an elegant Margaux ) fruit, soft dark fruits and ever elegant balance. This is a magnificent wine through and through, on point, in harmony and does not scream or shout, more lets you discover its graceful Beauty with a capital B. Nicol 99 - Andreas 100 > 99. Drink now but with another easy decade of great drinking.

We discussed this wine being like the ever stoic but magnificent ballerina , and Andreas mentioned the bit in the performance of the Chinese state ballet with the ballerina performing the main act on the Ballerino’s shoulders. Ever so magical scene. Frankly this wine is not the girl, but the boy making it ever so effortless and still exhibiting a strength and elegance but without ever braking character.
