2000 La Jota Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountainmore |
3/3/2017 - Lipsman Likes this wine: 97 pointsBricking. Mushrooms and cherries on the nose. Candied cherries backed by clean acidity, juicy licorice, with dark plums, forest floor and complexity that is nimble and light on its feet. Long on the palate with waves of flavor. Worth seeking out. At its peak now through 2023. |

These notes follow on the palate with anise, cedar, and earth, all enveloped in a silken robe of mellow tannins. Great balance, deeply saturated fruits. Simply superb. Drink now - 2030. |

12/7/2020 - Quiet Lion Likes this wine: 95 pointsDecanted two hours. This is still going strong with pure blueberry liqueur, earth, black pepper, relaxed tannins, some floral notes. Showing beautifully at 20 years and good for at least another five. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

6/10/2018 - Lipsman Likes this wine: 95 pointsA beautiful mountain cabernet, showing deeply saturated flavors of cherry, anise, and cola. La Jota has a long finish and smooth, refined tannins. A full bodied, balanced wine drinking exceptionally well right now. |

9/3/2016 - Lipsman Likes this wine: 95 pointsDark garnet. No bricking. Not much aroma, but deep harmonious flavors of anise, cherry, a touch of blueberry and strawberry. Super silky tannins. Growing complexity. This is just coming into its own. Drink now through 2025, but will drink well through 2030. |

12/30/2017 - Quiet Lion Likes this wine: 94 pointsPopped and poured. Classic Howell Mountain Cabernet showing very well. After being open 90 minutes or so there was a touch of campfire added into the well-integrated fruit, oak, acid and alcohol. You wouldn't know this was from a challenging year. |

6/10/2016 - Lipsman wrote: 94 pointsA wonderful California Cabernet. Drinking super smooth now, with a delicate sweetness, complex fruits, and terrific length. One of California's last classic cabernets--without all the blousy fruit and alcohol. Wonderful. |

9/17/2017 - Quiet Lion Likes this wine: 93 pointsGreat effort for a challenging vintage but then it's Howell Mountain. Pungent nose of barnyard and forest floor that some may not be able to get past. On the palate, focused dark mountain fruit, licorice, dark chocolate, coffee, and tart autumn leaves. If you enjoy this style don't overlook it due to the vintage, but be warned it's not a crowd pleaser. |

3/10/2017 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 92 pointsWe bought this on special at the state store, even before we built our cellar. 2000 was not a great year in California, but the Howell Mountain pedigree showed through. Table talk included the fact that this family owned winery was bought, and isn't the same. They were making good stuff back then. Wine was classic Cali Cab, nicely resolved and balanced. Wish we had bought a few more bottles. |

3/29/2015 - domestic_primate Likes this wine: 91 pointsReading previous notes made me cautious about this, but no need. There was a surprising amount of fruit left, balanced off by some leather and earth as expected for the age of the bottle. I do know this bottle was stored in ideal conditions; just wish now I could have got more. |

9/19/2008 - silvercup wrote: 90 pointsNice aromas of leather, tea, dried cherries, potpourri, red currant, guava, and anise. Flavors of dried cherries, oak, dust, and tea. Good acidity, still bright on the palate, through the earth and dusty aromas. Tannins were definitely prevalent, but overall the mouthfeel was pretty silky. |

2/22/2009 - winegr wrote: 90 pointsStill tight. Lots of good balance and more of a bordeaux-like balance and complexity, but the fine grained tannins are drying and hide the medium amount of fruit there. Nice acidity balances out the wine and make it maintain some freshness. Better Day 2 with more complexity coming out and the tannins slightly less pronounced. Probably would have been good far another day as well. Drink with heavy, double decanting or hold. Don't think this will ever be great. 50/50 as to whether this gets better wiith time versus what a long decant will get you. 89-90. |

9/26/2009 - Grinner wrote: 90 pointsStill a nice dense ruby/purple color, it has a penetrating nose of dark fruit, minerals, earth, and a bit too much black olive for my taste. Palate echoes the nose, with very nice density and length. Very sturdy still, reminds me of some Howell Mtn wines I've had. |

8/10/2014 - Lipsman wrote: 89 pointsNeeds an hour decanting. No bricking. Dark garnet. Clean aromas of red fruits. A little bitter tea flavor suggests this could use more time in the bottle. Full bodied, long on the palate. Moderately complex. Should improve. Try again in 2018-2019. |

12/17/2011 - AMC Eagle wrote: 89 pointsPopped and poured through a vinturri. Dark raspberry/black cherry in color. Very nice legs on the glass. Cassis, dark red fruits, with some cola and a hint of an old cigar box on the nose. Black fruits, some tobacco, and old leather, and some cedar box on the tongue. A bit tannic on the palate also with some heat at the end along with some tartiness. Light-medium bodied wine. The fruit seems to be a bit lacking overall for a Howell Mountain product. 89+ |
