2005 Château Montrose

Chateau Montrose Tasting (Bentley Bar & Restaurant, Sydney): Polished, rich and generous nose shows good quality oak, sweet spice, bacon fat, blackcurrant, plums a little violet, smells younger than the 2011, touch of clay. Juicy and generous here on the palate as well, a little savoury, almost salted liquorice notes joins the black hued fruits, tannins are woody, talc textured and super persistent, a little sous bois joins on the finish with the liquorice slightly more pronounced. Pretty clever

  • Comment posted by chatters:

4/26/2024 5:59:00 AM - on the night in question i preferred the 2011 to the 2019 and the 2005...it was drinking superbly for me.

Comparing the 2019 and the 2005 is very hard. The change in wine-making & viticultural approaches in the last 20 years are nigh on seismic when taking into account climate change as well. The 2005 is from the Parker years and, though I don't really consider Montrose a follower of that doctrine, all producers were impacted to some extent. Additionally the 2019 is a demonstration of how eminently approachable young Bordeaux is nowadays. Finally taking into account the, albeit slow, evolution of the 2005 versus the youthful impetuosity of the 2019 well, it's like having a faithful wolfhound and a young pup...on any given occasion they are both wonderful to have around...

Sorry, the short answer is, dunno...today maybe the 2019 but tomorrow I may have changed back to the 2005...In an ideal world a couple of bottles of each would do me just fine

Chateau Angelus at Ivy (Ivy Bottle Shop, Sydney): And the step up from the Carillon is equally pronounced. Bold, rich, dense, plenty of polished oak lens sweet spice, plain chocolate, a little caramel, lush and plush black plums backed by a smidge raspberry, a touch of fresh herbs lens an almost tobacco leaf note, toast and, again, a little soy sauce. Juicy, fleshy, dense, broad, alcohol warmth is present but controlled, plums are slightly dominated by the oak, creamy, time required though this is balanced. A little freshening red berry; raspberry and strawberry on the finish is pleasant. Powerful. Nice.

It's my first encounter with Angelus in this vintage...my favourite so far from an easily approachable perspective has been the Domaine de Chevalier though it's arguably almost Burgundian in style and weight - Grand Cru not village that is.

From recent vintages I find that 2016 is the one that is about of the box good to go based on my limited experience.

perfect mid-neck fill, long elastic cork, decanted 3 hrs, some coarse sediment, still very youthful vibrant colour with only the slightest brown tinge, lovely lifted, really fine and classy nose, elegant but with great intensity, also wonderful intensity, finesse and class on the palate, smooth and long, quite dry with distinct acid at the finish keeping it clean and fresh, lovely fine wine at its peak, classic aged DdC with a featherlight touch, only 12% abv, wonderful fragrant nose in the near-empty glass, the Volnay lover’s Bordeaux

3/31/2024 10:44:00 PM - that is very kind of you, thank you. I'm guessing that you are now based in Switzerland? I'd add Bowen & Mildura to that list of fine Coonawarra wines that are growing old gracefully and offer exceedingly pleasant enjoyment. I have so many vintages because they tend to come up on the (thriving) secondary market down here and DdC don't tend to be the top of peoples lists (long may it continue!)

Two bottles with Good Friday lamb - a lovely combination. Typically dark Pauillac and on the nose classic left bank graphite, cedar and a hint of cassis. On the palate drank well with the lamb but perhaps slightly light and short on the finish. I feel this is on its plateau and may have many years yet but will it improve? Certainly it needs food. Decanted for 30 minutes, a little sediment but nothing serious. For me it was open fairly quickly yet held up in the glass for several hours. Overall very enjoyable and once again proof of the strength of the vintage and the Chateau.

From magnum, with confit du canard.
Still deep red.

Displays a wonderful cab-nose with cassis and some spice.

Very balanced and long on the palate, classic Pessac from what for me is still an underrated vintage in Bordeaux.

Very pleasing wine at this stage, Great value for money, and a good match for the duck.

I have to reiterate my note from last year. A high street purchase 5 years ago at a modest price, I never really expected much from this. However, it has blossomed into an excellent Premier Cru Chablis, and now is drinking at its peak. Everything sits perfectly,

Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow": Pauillac and St. Julien (By me @ the factory): In the bouquet dark berries, minerals and beautifully dosed oak. On the palate an elegant wine with fresh acidity, dark and red berries, beautiful oak and cedar, good acidity and tannin with still enough power for some more years. Beautiful and classical wine.

It wasn't from my cellar so I can't comment on the storage conditions, one would have hoped that it would sing but, based on my own experiences of this vintage back in 2017 & 2019, this was always showing a little sharpness.

Perhaps the batch that ended up on Australian shores was impacted on its journey over?

Feels warm at best and hot at worse. Theres a lack of balance here, punctuated by charred wood and what seems to be a bit of dark, long hung Merlot dominance. Lost of charred vanilla makes it drink like a cheap St Emilion...I guess that makes it a compliment. Pass again....Others will like this more than me. My life is now too short to drink wines like this...

Tasted double blind in the first of two pairings of red wines from anywhere. Initially placed it as Bordeaux, but second-guessed myself and said Napa. Regardless, this had great depth and balance, with darker red fruit and earth notes. Really tasty now, but still on the younger side. I understand it had been decanted about 4 hours.

Wine Cellar - Bordeaux 2000 (Wine Cellar, Cape Town): (Tasted Blind): A medium to deep garnet colour, the aromas feature aniseed, tobacco, liquorice and black cherries. A wonderfully focused, supple wine that is rich in texture, delicious and lip-smacking good. Firm but yielding tannins and lively acidity add structure without overpowering and the flavours linger for a long finish. Closes with tobacco and cigar box, some carrion and cherry flesh.
