I've had a few of these over the last two or three years, but this one is more complex and developed. Worth a try for sure. I wish I had more of it. |

12/13/2008 - vanpe003 wrote: 91 pointsNose has aromas of smooth oak, dark fruit and beef bullion. Much of the same on the palate, which is much smoother than a bottle from a couple years ago. That said, this still seems to need more time to really come together completely. A bit short on the finish, and could use just a bit more depth of fruit, but I won't be surprised if both are corrected with more time. |

The bottle I had a few days ago changed my opinion. Was blown away with the nose, body, finish and distinctiveness of this wine. The tannins were significantly reduced as evidenced by the excessive amount of sediment. Regrettably, I only have one bottle left. |

3/25/2009 - futronic wrote: 91 pointsDecanted ~2 hours. Dark ruby colour. Huge, porty nose of raisins, prunes, chocolate, cherry, oak, caramel. Full-bodied, still pretty tannic and restrained, but it does show some chocolate, raisins, and prunes with more air. Moderate-length finish. I'll keep holding my remaining bottles. Try again in a couple years. |

Certainly needed time to open, then cassis, tobacco, earth, and oak with firm (not puckering) tannins on a long finish. Seemed a bit chunky, but with time it smoothed out. |

My original impression was that this was a reaonably fine wine ruined by heavy-handed oak treatment. It's still aggressive in that regard, but now it seems stylistic instead of an outright flaw. Black cherries, almond roca, flowers, charcoal briquettes. Dark, ripe, dense, chewy, and chocolatey with impressive concentration, but a still firm, tannic spine. This is a big wine that I'm really enjoying (especially considering my preconception), but it still loses ground with me because of the wood. But I'm looking forward to the remainder of my stash instead of contemplating putting them on the block. |

1/15/2011 - vanpe003 wrote: 92 pointsThis has really settled down since I last had it a couple of years ago. Still inky dark and monster-big on the palate, this is more the velvet glove than the brass knuckles it used to be. Significantly smoother on the finish, with overall a hint of Amarone-like sweetness to the palate, along with a rubber / black tea note that reminds me of the way Bulgari Black smells. Tannins develop with air. Still has structure to last, but score this time around can be related to current consumption as opposed to "potential". |

2/18/2011 - futronic wrote: 92 pointsDecanted one hour. Opaque ruby/purple/black colour. Aromas of graphite, grilled meat, black licorice, crushed blackberries, prunes, alcohol. Full-bodied, very rich and with an Amarone-like texture. Crushed blackberries/cassis, raspberry coulis, black licorice, prunes. Long finish, ~40-45s, with replays from the palate and tannins that clamp down resulting in a bit of chalkiness. |

7/29/2011 - Burgundy Al wrote: 86 pointsNothing timid here. Good wine, particularly good underlying raw materials, but I find this a bit overextracted and seemingly over-oaked. Intense black fruit with a sense of sweetness, then lots of dark chocolate and dark roast coffee from start to finish. I recall having this a couple of years ago and thought it better. |

But this needs decanting and plenty of open time to show its stuff. Coming together. Blueberries, cassis, leather, and expresso come out. Still plenty of tannins, but softened. Medium-long finish. |
