4/13/2017 - Seth Rosenberg Likes this wine: 94 pointsDeep and dark nose with wonderful perfume. Dark florals, minerals, sappy blackberries. Some great sniffs where the pure fruit is sweet with great sève. Nice savory game and minerals almost creamy. The palate shows emerging maturity. Lots of the savory game and minerals. Great mouthfeel with a little bit of tannins still in reserve. The age and the vintage make this more plush and accessible then my favorite recent vintages of this - this is a different interpretation but beautiful in its own way. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

12/9/2016 - sawira wrote: 93 pointsBottle #11 of 18. Ridiculously good. Still bright and deep purple red, no bricking. Great acidity, complexity, with the structure still asserting after being open three nights. Deep ripe black cherries, plenty of Oregon bramble, and beautiful precision - all in a suave, subtle and elegant package. I don't know what rickspicks was drinking, but it wasn't this. Stored since release in a quite cool cellar. This has many years to go - at least 10-12, and may go longer than that. This is still young and improving. Total score.

4/7/2016 - sawira wrote: NRInteresting. (I'm being generous.) This shows lots of brown in its coloration, is deeply extracted, and heavily oxidizing. At first it's a unique style but the second evening this was DOA - bitter finish, imbalanced, cracking up. Barely noticeable as Barolo, and not much of a finish either. This was bought at auction, so maybe had storage issues. Judgement deferred.

3/22/2016 - salil wrote: 97 pointsA few good men, many great wines (My place, CT): AP #14. This is on another level compared to any of the other regular Fritz Haag wines I've had. It's basically a ripe, botrytis-free Auslese, packed with an array of orchard fruits, vivid slate and stony mineral flavours beneath, and all sorts of other sweeter floral, creamy, and vanilla accents that keep emerging with more air. There's amazing acidity beneath that keeps it feeling incredibly light and racy, and an absurdly long finish. Still incredibly youthful - but this is already amazing.

1/26/2015 - sawira wrote: NRBottle #9 of 12. Tried over three nights. This bottle subdued, seems on the downhill slide. More sassafras and older fruit flavors, with a thin mid-palate and very short dilute finish. Did I wait too long? Next bottle soon to verify. Off bottle?

10/9/2014 - sawira wrote: 93 pointsStarting to just barely brick in color. Beautiful subdued, building nose with tarry florals and sensuous sweet cherries. Just starting its movement to leather and pleasant varnishy nuances. Soft and easily approachable at first, this shows it's Nebbiolo heritage over time in glass by revealing more backbone, depth and still present though hidden tannins. Great fruit, acidity and especially balance. Delicious now and will easily hold.

1996 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling KabinettMosel Saar Ruwer more |
7/3/2014 - sawira wrote: 94 pointsBrilliant gold color. Nose of baked red apples (Schaefer trademark for me), laden with brown baking spices, yellow fruits, talc, lime, brown sugar, lanolin, all the usual tertiary suspects. Teeth searing acidity roars to the fore on the palate and lasts through the lengthy, extremely persistent and very dry finish, with the beautiful ripe yellow fruit more as an accompaniment. For my palate this is a balanced wine, as I love the acidity of the 96 vintage, especially with a substantial mid-palate like this. Grows in the glass, though so tasty this bottle didn't last long. If you own this, you have a gem, and it will last for a decade plus, though no reason to defer, this is very slowly subsiding. For me, Kabinett doesn't get much better, and this is at a perfect peak. Awesome.

5/23/2014 - sawira wrote: 84 pointsHmmm. Interesting. I've saved this bottle for years, thinking it would be a treat. Maybe too young, but I doubt it. The fruit is fading, and this is such a cough syrupy, alcoholic, hot finish, mess. Just not my thing. I'd say this is falling apart and was better in 09, when last tasted.

1/16/2013 - sawira wrote: NRThe last of nine bottles, I've chased this since release every time it shows up on wb.c or elsewhere. A great wine comes to the end of its run. This remains, after many years on Mike's list, my single favorite zin he's ever produced. (Some have been close.) This bottle is just beginning to fade, and lose its Pet oriented structure. Still outstanding however, with huge, fat, almost cab-like notes of red and black fruit with deliciously granular tannins fading to the background. Mike, if you're reading this, go for the high Pet formula at Dry Creek again when the vintage permits. This wine is a revelation, thank you for the great run. Drink up, and enjoy!

5/8/2012 - sawira wrote: 93 pointsVibrant, deep burgundy red, shading to mahogany at rim. Slightly candied black cherrries initially on the nose. Delicious, perfectly mature CA PN. Understated balancing acidity, some earth, excellent mid-palate, outstanding length. Minimal, but noticeable, sassafras/element. Outstanding mature New World pinot. This isn't going anywhere anytime soon, but not improving either. At at a perfect peak now. Drink up, unless you're a tertiary fiend like me :-)
