2010 Fratelli Brovia Barolo Brea Vigna Ca'mia

Delicate rose petals and deep, deep cherry fruit are supported by firm but elegant tannins and vibrant acidity. Not quite the fireworks of Cappellano Rupestris 2010, but the similarities at core of this Ca’ Mia wonderfully capture the balance of beauty/structure that is the magic of Serralunga. Wish I had bought more!

Wish I took detailed notes but the depth of the nose and sweetness of tannin are so impressive for this difficult vintage. A big step above the 2014 langhe nebbiolo bottlings from some of my favorites producers like G. Rinaldi, Cappellano and Canonica.

At first pour, there's not much to discern between the '12 and '13: elegant fruit, serralunga spice, great acidity and notable but savory tannins. Give it a few hours and the vintages really show their differences with unmistakable Cappellano magic. The '12 is jovial, cinnamon spiced and seductive with medicinal dark cherry syrup whereas the '13 is more stern, ferrous and brimming with balsamic notes. Profiles like this can't be captured in a number score and I can't pick a favorite. To me, the '12 is that sudden craving for the sheer joy of Nebbiolo and the '13 is for a more serious meal while the Rupestris are sleeping in the cellar. I love these wines.

2014 Bartolo Mascarello Langhe Nebbiolo

Langhe DOC more

11/4/2016 - ChazGeorgetown14 wrote: NR

Lots of juxtapositions at this stage. Light in body and with furry tannins. Sweet cherries offset by sour rhubarb. Floral and earthy. The fruit is a bit wild yet somehow elegant. Not monumental, but unmistakably Mascarello.

This is notably better than the 2014 langhe nebbiolo offerings from G. Rinaldi and G. Canonica. That said, I think the 2013 is my favorite B. Mascarello langhe Nebbiolo of 2011-2014. With the hype machines in motion, a few bottles will inevitably arrive stateside and be offered at a stupid price of $50+ ...but it's worth trying once if you love the house.

This is a particularly exciting bottle. P&P over 2.5 hours, it absolutely explodes with the sappy cherry intensity of a Ludens caugh drop and maintains an unrelenting fun factor. There's an underlying sense of tangy/spicy/herby savoryness that I wouldn't call complex but it offers an insanely enjoyable balance of red fruit, tannin and acidity. I'd like to freeze time and enjoy this sweet spot of concentrated youthful exuberance.

After a couple stellar bottles of '10, curiosity got the better of me and we had to check in on the '08. Glorious serralunga spice, honey, violets, roses and tar over a signature base of medicinal cherry cola. I could drink this alone but it screams for herb crusted lamb or carne crudo or a plate of local cheeses that are pungent and oddly delicious. No signs of fading, yet somehow the elegance of the '08 vintage is like a leash that can barely hold on to the feral Cappellano tannins... the tension is intoxicating.

I appreciate and respect the merit in different interpretations of Barolo, but this is the style that I love. It is not a restaurant wine; it is not polished, polite or "safe" like Vietti or Altare... Cappellano is something special.

2012 Cappellano Nebiolo d'Alba

Nebbiolo d'Alba Nebbiolo more

5/24/2016 - ChazGeorgetown14 wrote: NR

Perfect for when you need a mid week Cappellano fix. Amazing how this Novello juice sooooo in line with his Serralunga baroli. What starts off as cinnamon and red fruit becomes progressively darker after a few hours and transitions to nutmeg, clove and just a hint of turmeric. Constant throughout is a vibrant core licorice that is both semi-sweet and semi-bitter like chinotto soda (a real chinotto like Lurisia or Moretti, not Pellegrino). I love this.

Irresistibly delicious now, so buy a few if you can. Though "just" a lowly Nebbiolo d'alba from a seemingly variable vintage, I'm inclined to think this will be most enjoyable over the next five years and will probably be good for 10.

Follow up: A second bottle was very enjoyable, though it didn't have nearly the same magic... but hey, that's Cappellano. Totally worth it!

2010 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Tre Tine

Nebbiolo more

4/29/2016 - ChazGeorgetown14 Likes this wine: NR

Strawberries, raspberries and red liquorice are complimented by roses and base of river stones. After an hour or so, there is a pleasantly tart and just slightly bitter component; much like eating an unprocessed cranberry with tannins that are firm but never harsh. Really gets going after 6 hours as the wine becomes a bit darker, thicker and sweeter. There is an unmistakeable Ravera connection to the Langhe Nebbiolo, albeit with an added layer of refinement from the CSL and depth which I imagine is the Le Coste. While the Brunate is a powerhouse of balsam and tar, this Tre Tine is a lithe yet elegant expression of G. Rinaldi which should not be overlooked.

This will surely improve with age, but I really enjoy following nebbiolo's evolution along the way. If you can, treat yourself to a bottle now because it would be a pity to miss out on this delicious window of youthful exuberance.

3/13/2016 - ChazGeorgetown14 Likes this wine: NR

Pop. Pour. Wow. Cherries, strawberries and red licorice practically leap from the glass and remain incredibly vibrant over the course of several hours. The characteristic floral and herbal notes are present but maybe a bit less than usual; this bottle was deeply focused on a core of red fruit. The palate is just as fresh although not quite as sweet as the nose would suggest. Sour cherries, raspberries and pulsating acidity hit the tongue and remind you that this is a young nebbiolo. My only gripe is the slightly bitter chalkiness of the tannins which might be a result of the volatile spring and uneven cycle. Nonetheless, this is another delicious bottle which has come along beautifully over the last two years and still has more to give. Lovely.

Nose of liquorice, forest floor and a touch of lavender. Palate has a lovely balance of dark sweet fruit, good acidity and just slightly bitter herbs. The '13 was green and edgy whereas the '11 was fat and juicy, the '10 seems to split the the difference. I know I'm biased towards Piedmont and especially MT's wine, but this is seriously delicious juice and (to me) the essence of barbera. Love it.

Ripe and deep for the vintage with predominantly blackberry fruit and a rustic edge of pete and brine. Surprisingly reminiscent of the '09 I tasted at Accomasso's house about a year ago, this 2010 has a decidedly dark profile verging on the edge of prune. While would prefer a bit more red fruit and clarity (a la B. Mascarello), this retains lovely balance and is an undeniably classic wine. Nearly impossible to find, this is for those who really have a passion for traditional Piedmont and the unsung characters of this magical place.

Consistent with the last bottle, this opens a bit dull and unexpressive at first but blossoms beautifully overnight. Please give this wine the patience and attention it deserves! On day 2, sappy sweet blackberry pie goes up against dark brambly forest fruit, all the while supported by bracing acidity. Wonderful balance of black cherry syrup and bright energy on the finish. This has a lushness that appeals to critics and drives scores, though I definitely prefer the edginess of colder vintages like '08, '10 and '13 for both Nebbiolo and Barbera. Interesting to come back to this vintage after drinking the '11 Barolo last weekend. To that end, the 2011's exemplify MT's winemaking skills in the "heat" of adversity. While I would trade my remaining 2011's for the lean and mean 2013's, I wouldn't trade MT's barbera for anyone else's...in any vintage. I've been having fun with the entry level wines from big names recently: Mascarello, Rinaldi, Cappellano and Accomasso... though I'm hopelessly in love with the brilliance of Cantina Mascarello under the stewardship of Maria Taresa (and Alan).

Give this wine a score? Haha! There's no accounting for preferences... and that's exactly what this is for me.

11/27/2015 - ChazGeorgetown14 wrote: NR

Love at first sip with Fabio's pelaverga, it has been great to follow the evolution over the past few years. The primary red fruit profile is gently fading into the background and a core of sweet tobacco continues to build with a few hours of air. That said, the nose and palate are unmistakably pelaverga with such a vibrant display of rosemary, thyme and abundant peppercorns which make this wine so savory and delicious. I think I prefer to drink these within 1-2 years of release to enjoy the fresh fruit, but this was a fun experience and the wine shows no signs of falling apart anytime soon.

Easy to drink, but at the same time I find these wines to have more charm, character and versatility than most barbera or dolcetto. Great juice.

11/20/2015 - ChazGeorgetown14 Likes this wine: NR

Somewhat tighter than it was at the cantina in July 2015, but it opens up with beautiful grace and elegance. A floral bouquet mixes with the freshest strawberries & semi sweet cherries which I find to be just so characteristic of Maria Taresa's wines. With air, the nose develops an negroni-like sense of botanicals and orange peel that I really dig. The palate is a bit lighter than the nose would suggest and leans a bit more towards tart cranberries. A short/medium term drinker with acid/tannins that are notably energetic and a total delight.

MT says that this is intended to be an early drinking nebbiolo... not a baby barolo. But at the same time, it is worlds above just about everything else in its category. Yes, the fruit profile may be relatively simple but it is presented with an ineffable sense of purity and classicism. Sigh. This represents everything that I love and could ask for from an entry level nebbiolo.

2013 Giuseppe Rinaldi Nebbiolo Langhe

Langhe DOC more

11/1/2015 - ChazGeorgetown14 Likes this wine: NR

Consistent with the last two bottles. Lovely floral and lean cherry fruit with a touch of powdered sugar on the nose; not sappy sweet but not totally austere either. The palate shows much of the same, though it is very serious with steel, stones and minerality. On day 2 it's holding strong and, if anything, seems a bit more structured. I believe this is 100% Ravera juice and spends 18 mo in botti. While not quite as intense and deep as the baroli from this house, the red fruit and charged acidity strike a chord reminiscent of the Tre Tine 2010.

So where does this wine fall in the spectrum of non-barolo nebbiolo? By comparison, I find the brightness and perfume of B. Mascarello nebbiolo more seductive in it's youth and so I'll probably drink those a bit on the early side. That said, the stern tannic structure of this G. Rinaldi bottling is totally convincing and I see this wine getting even better with 2-5 years on it.

2011 Cappellano Nebiolo d'Alba

9/2/2015 - ChazGeorgetown14 Does not like this wine: NR

Similar experience as the last bottle I had a few weeks ago. Opened up a bit dirty with a nose of hot dog water overpowering the black cherry cola notes that I typically love in Cappellano. On the palate the warm vintage was reasonably in check (although full disclosure: I am very much biased to favor the cooler vintages in Piedmont). On day two it cleared up a bit and I found myself really trying to like this wine. While it was undoubtedly nebbiolo in profile, it lacked the simple purity that makes the great traditionalist producers' base wines so enjoyable. I am a huge fan of Cappellano and recently had the '05 Pie Rupestris and '05 Nebbiolo d'alba, which were both drinking beautifully... so maybe I'll just chalk this one up to the vintage?

Predominantly red maraschino cherry with hints of blackberry liquer and cinnamon... did a bit of the cannubi boschis make it in here? Subtle notes of balsam appear for fleeting moments in the glass... maybe a touch of brunate in the mix? Not sure of the exact vineyard blend, but to me this screams of 2008 in the village of barolo. Even better than the last bottle but not much evolution over the past 2 years; still I am thoroughly pleased with the depth of fruit, balancing acidity and traditional yet approachable appeal of this wine.

While somewhat B. Mascarello-ish in it's fruit profile, this wine wont make you contemplate the meaning of life. Instead my thoughts are more focused on why I didn't buy more of this simply enjoyable, no fuss nebbiolo.

Opened with an immediate nose of cloves, spices, cinnamon and sweet sappy black berries, consistent with the palate. Then a 2 hour slow ox reveals more flowers, earth, mushrooms and herbs that I also enjoyed in the Cappellano rupestris 05. Constantly evolving while the acidity maintains poise and verve as it paired perfectly with lamb ragu. Although it develops with air, I must stress that it was an absolute delight from the first pour to the last.

Some drink highly rated wines to convince themselves of greatness. Some drink highly rated wines to convince others of greatness. This is a wine that sets out to prove nothing. I enjoyed this wine for what it is: a marvelously pure, complex and delicious expression of Barolo in a tough vintage. While people clamor for the 2010 (and yes, it is sensational), this 2005 is a gem of a wine for those who are into truly understanding the subject matter rather than just following media hype.

No formal notes. Raw, visceral and rustic tannins. Sensationally pure red fruits, rocks herbs and forest floor. More powerful than the 08 but never heavy. I wish I had taken more descriptive notes. Imagine cappellano in the village of barolo. I can't put a number score on this... it is the essence of pure, unpolished and unrestricted barolo. Reminds me of b mascarello fruit and g rinaldi structure, though its a bit unpolished in a great way. I love this.

This is the kind of wine for people who drink for purity, elegance and finesse... not for power or points.

This wine can be seriously misunderstood for those who pop and pour. It opens with a somewhat unappealing nose of sweet & sour sauce and a muted palate of earthy cherry. After an hour it picks up an element of english breakfast tea. After a 6 hour slow ox, the wine cleans up into a beautiful expression of classic nebbiolo. Tons of roses, tar and menthol. Picks up lots of freshness with lovely crunchy red cherries and delightful spiceyness. Absolutely fantastic right now of you give it enough time to slow ox. Delicious

Gorgeous nose of strawberry, cinnamon spice, herbs and olive that seems to be signature of Burlotto’s Monvigliero. Young but so airy and elegant. This has put on some weight as it shows more of the 2008 silky sweet tannins and less dusty stems than the last bottle 6 months ago. The crystalline purity of the red berry fruit and overall balance make this is absolutely delicious right now. The lithe and bright acidity suggests very a promising future. Very Vosne-Romanee but inthe ocntext of barolo.

Texturally, the 2008 is even silkier than the densely packed 2006 and the forward 2009.

I ordered online from vine2home. The owner couldn't be nicer and the bottles have all been pristine... not to mention insanely good pricing. I happily stocked up.

TONS of airy madagascar peppercorn with garden herbs, cranberry and a bit of watermelon rind. Perfumed, very fresh and perfect with grilled seafood. Absolutely consistent with Burlotto's expressive house style of elegance, balance and gorgeous purity. Not complex like the monvigliero barolo but this pelaverga is just as unique. Day 1: Explosive nose of herbs, forest floor, dried strawberries and bitter tangerine rinds with a bit of fresh whipped cream. Palate had the surreal Burlotto Monvigliero silkyness, even moreso than the 2008 vintage. I am generally not a fan of the 2009 Barolos but Verduno is so far north that this wine manages great balance and elegance.

Day 2: Much of the same from day 1, but add prominent sweet strawberry concentrate to the nose. The body picks up a bit more midpalate depth which was lacking on day 1 and I hope this continues to put on some weight in the cellar. Still too young today.

Overall: Classic, beautifully pure and totally compelling. As if someone took the apline herbiness and red fruit core of Gattinara and somehow blended it with a bit of the cool sweet ripeness of Barolo/La Morra. I keep drawing parallel's between Burlotto's Monvigliero and LdH Tondonia. I love it's charm!
