Served from bottle at a dinner party. Still showing nice density in the glass. Bright aromas of violets and crushed stone, along with black currant. Completely integrated on the palate, highlighting the same floral minerality and black fruit found on the nose. Mere hints of cedar and tobacco, seamlessly woven within the wine. Completely resolved tannins, this drank with the elegance of a fine Pinot Noir, without showing compromise of its structure. No baked fruit or oxidized notes at all. Plenty of depth on the finish. An awesome wine still in its prime.

Second Sunday Group: 2006 vs 2007 Napa Cabs/Blends (R&D's): Double blind. Deep inky crimson color. Aromas of chocolate, herbs, cassis and black fruit. Firm tannins. Cassis and black fruit with nice underlying acidity and a long finish. Develops a nice floral undertone as it opens in the glass. Terrific fruit on the palate with a floral liqueur quality as well. Balanced and pretty. I like this quite a bit. 94-95 pts.

Price-wise, they are seriously underrated, aren't they? Look at auction prices for older vintages....they are a steal.

Dinner with Beth Novak Milliken, Spottswoode Estate (The Library, Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): Served blind amongst 13 mainly Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignons. Purple-red and totally opaque. Nose is all pencil lead and undeveloped. Palate is very round, easy and approachable but high alcohol and too young to the point of being a bit headachey. It did soften with a long time in the glass but was clearly a decade or two younger than the preceding 8 wines.

Not judged to be a properly representative bottle by Beth.

Notes from day 1, bottle open for 3 hours or so.
Dark red to purple in color.
Nose of rainer cherry, little floral, worn saddle leather, eucalyptus, coffee
Palate of red cherry, licorice, coffee grounds, worn leather, herb, spicey tannin.
The finish was long in length, good structure and acidty.
Overall the wine was very solid overall, continued to improve with additional airation.

Boxing Day Lunch at Home with Friends (Our Place, Hong Kong): What a beautiful wine! For those who don't know the story, the Mondavi family led by Cesare Mondavi , the family scion and lead winemaker, bought this property in the 1950s but his son Robert left in 1965 to set up his eponymous winery (at the age of 53). So this is a late vintage made by his dad.

Distinct semi-opaque unalluring brown colour, remniscent of English 'Worcester Sauce'. Nose is surprisingly alive and vibrant - lots of savoury notes ( including Worcester Sauce), old brown shoes. Palate is unexpectedly fresh, good acidity, alive, lots of Chinese Medicine black herbs, Worscester Sauce, another more common English bottled Brown Sauce and all finished at the back end by semi-rotted plantation wood, still distinct tannin, lambs' blood...then slowly some lovely blackberry fruit emerges out of the loamy mists of an autumnal forest. Oh 'GOSH!'...this has suddenly totally changed into a gorgeous and seductive blackberry fruit and younger oak. Best after 3 hours from pouring...gets very heady and reverberant on the finish...a Lazarus-like experience. It ended up as one of my favourite experiences of 2020, although slightly beaten by the 1961 Giuseppe Contratto Barolo we drank alongside it. Merry Christmas!

Better on the earthy, stone, cherry and tobacco nose, than on the firm, cassis and fresh, ripe, red berry filled palate. This is a masculine, almost austere styled wine that some tasters will definitely like more than others.

Terrific showing for this. Complex, sophisticated nose of orchard fruit, seashells, saline and minerals. The wine is starting to really show layers of complexity while retaining some of its youthful vigor. Really in a terrific place but I suspect the best is yet to come.

From standard bottle from a perfectly stored case. In a nice early maturity stage, quite firm this comes across as a "statemen like" vintage grand marque champagne, developing some mocha notes. Will hold forever if perfectly stored as this cuvee does.

Translucid but intense golden robe. Expressive albeit restrained nose of pear, white peach, green apple, fresh almonds, white flowers (esp. jasmine), some savory notes such as toasted brioche, old parmesan, or mild truffle, and an occasional sea breeze. On the palate, the key is the tension between the ethereal drive of the fine bubbles and overarching minerality vs. the creamy, (borderline heavy) lemon curd, baked apricots and red apples body of the wine. Warming up, occasional meaty notes (esp. foie gras). Great length, with enduring notes of grapefruits, crème brûlée, and hints of white pepper. On a side note, the food pairing capacities of this champagne with fine Chinese cuisine (e.g., Cantonese soup, braised pork feet, etc.) are remarkable.

This was a beauty.

Very balanced between its sweetness, fresh but not overbearing acidity, and dry style. A sophisticated champagne, almost like a really fine type Bordeaux style with just a bit more exuberance from its pure fruit. No doubt a sweet nectar of meyer lemon and lemon meringue pie. Shows a very pleasing, mineral laden finish with a nice medium intensity and excellent length, but one you have to pay attention to in order to appreciate its finesse. As it warmed, the fruit turned to nectarine and slight orange flavors. Alcohol never perceptible.

Used to toasted to the life of my father, just after scattering his ashes at sea. Lived up to the moment and then some. Already looking forward to the next bottle.

From a bottle with the identifier of "L63DF131616," a side cork code of C81KY and a top cork code of "Y10" (assumed to be the predominant vintage in the bottle), this light golden sparkler is a very enjoyable nonvintage Brut. A blend of 60% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 5% Pinot Meunier, it is a light-to-medium-bodied wine with a brisk small bead and aromas of quince, white peaches, jasmine and cardamom. Crisply acidic and flavorful, it delivers a gustatory payload that is congruent with the aromas, adding additional citrus and pear elements. Solid in the middle and medium length on the back end, this particular bottling can be used for holiday toasting over the next three years. Drink now-2024.

Alcohol :: 12.5%
Dosage: 5g. Definitely a treat to have this. I thought this would be dominated by the solid structure and acid from the 1996 vintage but I was wrong. This is showing superbly well and everyone in the room get hooked immediately. Extraordinary focus, depth and complex with touch of oxidative note that blossom from the glass along with chrysanthemum, lily, hazelnut and intense yellow fruits. On the palate this is all about harmony. Impeccable balance between the vivid acid core and seductive fruits. Complex layer of flavors continue to expand and linger on the palate effortlessly. Palate staining intensity yet remains so elegance, lively and weightless. The grip at the finished is firm but no forceful, with complex salinity and sweet juiciness lingering. Bravo.

Two bottles. Served in medium-sized white wine glasses. Straw gold colour. Major and persistent streams of tiny lively bubbles. Nose hasn't changed since last drank in May 2019 - lovely pure Chardonnay character - stable-room fresh straw, lots of toasted yeasty Hovis bread, hints of oyster shells. Palate remains young and taut.....suggestive of low dosage or just youth? Big reverb and resonance on a very heady and long Chardonnay-driven finish. Needs a few years to open although the strongly tart low dosage structure previously noted has dialed down faster than I expected. A fab Champagne and brilliant QPR at under US$70.

4/13/2020 3:31:00 AM - @Slimes - Point taken. I think it was the effect of drinking two bottles! It was definitely the Blanc de Blancs and I misinterpreted a certain tightness on the palate as Pinot influence when it was actually the low dosage, I suspect.

Nowhere as impressive as the 95 Dom P2 I had few months ago. The 95 Oenotheque was fresh and young, but not showing the layers, depth and nuances of the P2 which resembled a Montrachet with bubbles. Lacking the tension you would expect.

I have drank quite a few of these since Christmas 2021 and can now declare it 'dead as a parrot' to quote the Monty Python sketch against myself, because I really wanted it to be still alive as I'd made the mistake of keeping this too long. Drank this side by side with the 2008 Dom Perignon, which was an incredible privilege.

The Dom Perignon was grand, but the Cristal was perfect. Very likely the best champagne that I've ever had.

On the nose clear notes of smoke, yeast and wet stone, alongside apple and citrus fruit. Chardonnay is very recognisable here, giving off blanc de blancs vibes. Incredibly structured, powerful yet clean, supple and perfectly balanced on the palate. Extremely long finish. What a treat this was.

However, if you have not drank it, personally I'd reserve a perfect Champagne score for Dom Perignon Oenoteque 1971 (which is still being released, I think). As is all things, taste is a very personal thing, but I can speak from also having 3 cases of Crystal 2008, so my bets are hedged :)

Beautiful and seamless; wonderfully toasted, brioche, pear and fine lemons, creamy mousse, roasted nuts, lightly chalky minerality. Quite elegant and a long finish.
