Duck Con Feet part 1? (Cheech & Shef's): Deep purple / dark red. Nose of chocolate and alcohol, with some fruit - plums perhaps? Big, heavy frut, smooth silky tannins. Leather. A touch austere, but very nice.

Dinner at home of pasta. Opaque, dark ruby-black color. Nose not giving much -- black fruit, pepper, a medicinal edge? On the palate, currant, chocolate, anise, dried herbs and the aforementioned medicinal note that's hard to place. Large structure -- strong tannins slam the door on the finish. There's a lot going on here, but this is unforgiving and somewhat clumsy now. I'd give it at least a couple of years before coming back to try again.

Decanted 3 hours. Dark and opaque. Nose explodes with tar, earth, soy, and meat. Nose is incredibly complex and distinctive, once this opened up in the decanter, it was showing far better than the last bottle I had 6 months ago. Palate shows great intensity with good acid backbone and a long finish. This wine shows a lot of character and distinctiveness for a small price.

Tight as nails, took an hour in a decanter to show anything at all. Do not open for another 5 years or so.

Took being open a couple of hours to come around, but was really nice when it opened up. Even better on night 2, this will reward great patience. 3+ years at least...

This was just a baby, but man what potential. Delicious already with some air, if you don't mind a bit of tannin with the currant, plum, dried herbs and tar. A small amount kept in the fridge had additional complexity on day two -- dark chocolate, leather, a trace of butter -- but then closed up with 20 minutes in the glass. Gonna be hard keeping my hands off the rest of these. 91 points for now with big potential upside.

sfwine: Aglianico from Campania, Basilicata, Puglia and Molise: Lifted nose, with fruity aromas that seem a little overripe, plus menthol, spice and floral tones. Sweet ripe fruit, licorice candy, fleshy and rather structured and still a bit astringent. Decidedly international and perhaps a little glitzy, but tasty nonetheless. I think this still needs 1-2 years. 90% aglianico, 10% cabernet sauvignon. My 4/6 in this flight, although I remember liking this more when tasted previously.

PnP (to better appreciate the tannins). Actually, this very dark wine is quite fun to drink. It has really intense aromas of blackberries and tar, but also has licorice, spices and earth. Yes the palate has tightly packed fruit and bold tannins, bordering on obtrusive, but the acidity does lift the rich flavors to the point that the wine flavors actually accentuate accompanying food to the point that my eyebrows went up and I had to smile. This could be amazing if (or when) the fruit opens up. (Night 2: everything still present but tannins a bit less hard.)

This wine continues to put on weight. Dark color, plum and tar on the palate, with a med-long finish. Try again in 2 years.

Night one... Hard as nails. Very backward, tannic and ungiving both on the nose and palate. But there is ample ripeness, depth and promise.

Makansutra Outing @ Cafe de HK (Balestier Road): Lipstick rouge and indian scents with roasted walnuts. Extremely young with turpentine overwhelming dark cherries and dark wood. There is an underlying confectionary blackberry sweetness. A full bodied wine.

This is simply an overly tannic wine. There is recognizably nice fruit, good minerality and other character here to make a nice wine, but I just can't see it ever being anything terrific because the "hull" oversizes and ultimately diminishes everything else by comparison. A pity...Even as such, it's drinkable and not unpleasant, it just seems like an empty box or a decent picture in a vastly-oversized box.

Cracked this on Wednesday to have a glass and check in on it. Wall of tannin with some underlying minerality, pepper, violet and cassis. The nose exhibited a little sharp dill characteristic. Fast forward to Friday night when i got back to it and the tannins subsided but so did the fruit. The dill was gone, replaced by more of a mint characteristic. Nice violets, licorice and pepper. Unfortunately there just wasn't much to it. I have a couple left and I'll just leave them be for another 10 years and see what happens. 87?

Tasted April 10, 2009.

Opened and served immediately. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of berries with a light perfume. Straightforward flavors of berries on the palate. Medium acidity, still fairly firm tannins, medium body. Drink over the short to medium term. Good, not great.

Showing a deep dark plum color in the glass with ruby highlights throughout the glass while swirling scents of dark fruit, earth, and black cherries. In the mouth dark fruits are closely followed by firm tannins and brisk acidity that lingers throughout the notes of tobacco, granite, and blueberries.

Deep, midnight ruby color. Rich nose of dark fruit, dark chocolate and cracked black pepper. Thick and rich on the palate, with dark berry, plum, roasted coffee and cocoa powder. Finish is dry and oaky, with medium length. All in all, this is performing well and very enjoyable now.
