On the palate, currant, chocolate, anise, dried herbs and the aforementioned medicinal note that's hard to place. Large structure -- strong tannins slam the door on the finish. There's a lot going on here, but this is unforgiving and somewhat clumsy now. I'd give it at least a couple of years before coming back to try again. |

Nose is incredibly complex and distinctive, once this opened up in the decanter, it was showing far better than the last bottle I had 6 months ago. Palate shows great intensity with good acid backbone and a long finish. This wine shows a lot of character and distinctiveness for a small price. |

A small amount kept in the fridge had additional complexity on day two -- dark chocolate, leather, a trace of butter -- but then closed up with 20 minutes in the glass. Gonna be hard keeping my hands off the rest of these. 91 points for now with big potential upside. |

Sweet ripe fruit, licorice candy, fleshy and rather structured and still a bit astringent. Decidedly international and perhaps a little glitzy, but tasty nonetheless. I think this still needs 1-2 years. 90% aglianico, 10% cabernet sauvignon. My 4/6 in this flight, although I remember liking this more when tasted previously. |

9/12/2008 - thomaskeil wrote: 91 pointsPnP (to better appreciate the tannins). Actually, this very dark wine is quite fun to drink. It has really intense aromas of blackberries and tar, but also has licorice, spices and earth. Yes the palate has tightly packed fruit and bold tannins, bordering on obtrusive, but the acidity does lift the rich flavors to the point that the wine flavors actually accentuate accompanying food to the point that my eyebrows went up and I had to smile. This could be amazing if (or when) the fruit opens up. (Night 2: everything still present but tannins a bit less hard.) |

There is recognizably nice fruit, good minerality and other character here to make a nice wine, but I just can't see it ever being anything terrific because the "hull" oversizes and ultimately diminishes everything else by comparison. A pity...Even as such, it's drinkable and not unpleasant, it just seems like an empty box or a decent picture in a vastly-oversized box. |

4/17/2009 - tonyvelebil wrote: 87 pointsCracked this on Wednesday to have a glass and check in on it. Wall of tannin with some underlying minerality, pepper, violet and cassis. The nose exhibited a little sharp dill characteristic. Fast forward to Friday night when i got back to it and the tannins subsided but so did the fruit. The dill was gone, replaced by more of a mint characteristic. Nice violets, licorice and pepper. Unfortunately there just wasn't much to it. I have a couple left and I'll just leave them be for another 10 years and see what happens. 87? |
